  • Spacious back-to-basics camping field, 10 minutes’ drive from beaches
  • Peaceful Devon setting on the edge of Exmoor National Park
  • Large, well-spaced grass pitches with room for your car
Are you fond of camping trips where it’s just you, your tent, a few basic amenities and a location that’s worth bragging about? Clear your schedule and head away to Old Mill Cottages for a proper away-from-it-all Devon camping trip in a large, open field that's under 10 minutes’ drive from the beach. Which beach, you ask? Actually, it’s not just the one, but several: Combe Martin, Newberry and Wild Pear (on foot across South West Coast Path). A little longer – 15 minutes in the car – and you'll also get to a whole trove of additional bays around the Ilfracombe and Woolacombe areas. Of course, it’s always worth listening to the local experts on where to go; the team at Old Mill Cottages say Combe Martin’s sheltered bay should be a splendid pick for swimming, paddling and rockpooling, while Woolacombe’s three miles of gold sand score well with families and bodyboarders. Surfers, meanwhile, can head for the waves at Croyde beach, around 20 minutes’ drive away. Being right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park also sets you up nicely for hiking, cycling and touring highlights like the Valley of Rocks and Lynton and Lynmouth (all within half an hour’s drive). After a day by the sea or some Exmoor exploring, your simple, spacious camping field awaits with its generously sized grass pitches. They have plenty of room for your tent and car, as well as for the kids to run around. The site has been kept deliberately back-to-basics, with just portable toilets, but ample space, a friendly atmosphere and, of course, that stunning location, which often gets nighttime views of the starry skies.

Local attractions

When on holiday, kids often have one question ready: “What next?” There are many answers you could give at this location in Exmoor. Beach days, yes, but also quad-biking (10 minutes’ drive) or a trip to The Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (10 minutes’ drive). The latter is a local favourite packed with animals and life-sized moving dinosaur models. It also hosts daily shows like wolf and lemur talks and sea lion acrobatics. A few hours in Ilfracombe (10 minutes) should be another crowd pleaser. Stroll from its pretty harbour to Damien Hirst’s Verity statue or pick up the pace with coastal activities like coasteering. On the way back to the campsite, you may want to stop by Watermouth Castle (10 minutes) for activities like marble runs, tobogganing and gold panning inspired by children’s stories of fairies and smugglers. If you don’t fancy cooking after all of that, head south to the market town of Barnstaple (20 minutes) for a meal out; it has shops, supermarkets and restaurants galore.
