Camper can camping

  • Simple family campsite near Colyton in East Devon National Landscape
  • The Donkey Sanctuary 10 minutes’ drive; Jurassic Coast 15 minutes
  • Compost loos and hot shower; pub and shop 10 minutes’ drive
Back to basics it might be, but Blackbury Campsite is in one cracking location, with East Devon National Landscape views in all directions from the grass pitches, and close to all manner of fun things to do with the family. Jurassic Coast beaches or The Donkey Sanctuary, anyone? Only open for the school summer holidays, the level camping field has compost loos, a hot shower and an undercover wash area – all the facilities were built locally using equally local Devon larch. The site is south facing, so everyone gets the sunshine and can enjoy the far-reaching views over valleys and oak woodland. It’s super-easy to get to, and tucked away down a quiet lane on a gorgeous 200-acre farm dating right back to Saxon times. Throughout summer, the next-door neighbours (right opposite the campsite entrance) host Wiscombe Park motor-racing days, and there’s a lively roster of music festivals in Sidmouth. Need anything else? There are pubs and shops in Colyton (both 15 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

Blackbury Campsite offers a peaceful rural escape with beautiful views and ample space, particularly for children. Facilities are frequently praised for being exceptionally clean and well-maintained, with new eco-friendly compost toilets and washing-up areas. While the location is convenient for exploring nearby towns and beaches, some visitors noted a lack of mobile data signal. A recurring point is the limited number of showers and occasional issues with hot water pressure and availability, especially during busier periods.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great location. Clean facilities and lots of space. Clean facilities and a hot shower.

Disliked Nothing really. There is only 1 shower but was never an issue for us and we holidayed there in August and there was always plenty of vacant facilities.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This was our first time camping at this site. It was very spacious and had a lovely relaxing atmosphere. The toilets, shower, and sink areas were cleaned twice a day Overall lovely campsite ,which we will return to.

Disliked The only small problem, was with the shower. Trying to put you clothes on without getting them wet as the water sits on the floor. A window squeegee would be agood, so access water can be moved away.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Everything, quiet, laid back, small playground for the kids, clean facilities, nice surroundings.

Disliked Nothing, it was great, if I was going to be very picky I'd say that it could possibly do with another shower as one might struggle if it was busy, but again, that's just me being picky.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Had the whole area to ourselves. Perfectly peaceful and couldn't have asked for a better wild camp experience.

Amenities were very clean and was perfectly functional fir our stay.

Disliked Nothing really. Only slight thing was the sound of a bin being emptied in the morning on the main road but if we were camped away from the road a bit i doubt we would of heard it

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Absolutely everything!!

Very quiet, pretty views and just a piece of calm!
The eco loos were probably the best I have ever experienced!
Shower great.
Easy to get out to the coast, but lovely walks from campsite.

Disliked The only slight niggle was not the campsite but trying to drive out when all the traffic came along for the hill climb! It would have been useful if the hill climb stewards could direct traffic.
