  • Peaceful east Devon glamping site with gorgeous Axe Valley views
  • A 10-minute walk to Colyton’s pub/café; 10 minutes' drive to Seaton
  • Private hot tub, hammock, barbecue and bathroom for each pod
With a peaceful vibe, gorgeous rural Devon views and cosy camping pods on site, it’s likely you’ll want to hide away at Axe View Hideout for quite some time. This small glamping site looks out over the Axe Valley less than a mile from Colyton, and it’s an environmentally conscious place that does its best to preserve local wildlife and biodiversity. That means it’s off grid, with solar panels powering the site. There are tree-planting and rewilding projects going on too, and you’re likely to spot butterflies fluttering around the wildflower areas as testament to the success of it all. It's all very peaceful here, thanks to a location on a dead-end road with little passing traffic. The hilltop location means gorgeous views by day, and the lack of light pollution leads to some excellent stargazing after dark. It’s not far from town amenities, though: a riverside coffee shop, bakery, tapas bar and cosy country pub are all within a 10-minute walk, as is the tram stop for trips to Seaton. The accommodation is in cosy, characterful camping pods with warm lighting and natural wood. Each has dining space and a mini kitchen with fridge, kettle and utensils, plus wifi and a TV with Freeview. All you need to bring is your bedding and towels. Showers, eco-friendly compost toilets and a washing-up area are a few steps away and may be chilly in winter. There’s a barbecue outside each pod and a communal firepit if you fancy trying your hand at alfresco cookery – and will you be taking in the views of the spectacular scenery from your hammock or woodfired hot tub (some logs supplied)? Such dilemmas…

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: Fabulous location, great view, beautiful clean well kept pod, being able to lay in a hot tub, with such a fantastic view, with the sound of the wind in the trees made it a memorable experience.

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: The site is beautiful kept and feels so secluded, the cabin was cosy and very well thought out with solar lighting, Wi-Fi and a fold out table and chairs as well as the bed. We had taken cooking stoves but found they were there and ready to use at the cabin. Harry was very helpful with advice on where to go for food and the best local coffee for the morning. The hot tub was amazing and filled with water from the stream. It heated very quickly when lit and we enjoyed sunset in it with bats flying over us and sunrise in it as the fog cleared across the fields.

Disliked: Nothing, we had a magical night on site :)

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: Private secluded location with amazing views. Stargazing while in the hot tub was perfect. Took the tram (5min walk from site) through the nature reserves into Seaton. Had an evening meal at the kingfisher pub which is only 10 minutes from site. Then spent the evening back at the pod. One of the best glamping experiences we've had.

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: I loved this stay. The hideout has beautiful views and a peaceful, tranquil location. From the moment I arrived I felt welcome and safe, everything was beautifully put together, the hot tub, shower and compost toilet, all beautifully designed and well kept. The camping pod is delightful and everything you need is to hand. I loved the flowers and meadows and rolling fields in the distance. I recommend this stay to anyone it is a total gem for a holiday, an overnight stay or a weekend away. It was easy to find and easy to book. The hosts made sure I had everything I needed and responded quickly to any questions etc.

Local attractions

Want to see a bit more of your stunning surroundings? You can start by joining the The River Axe and East Devon Way footpath at the bottom of the road for a trail that takes you on a few loops through the countryside, passing old bridges, wartime pill boxes and wild swimming spots along the way. Another way to see some more views is to ride on the open-top tram through the wetlands nature reserve down to Seaton. If you prefer you can drive there in 10 minutes for a day at the beach, a bit of paddleboarding or a walk on the South West Coast Path towards Lyme Regis. Head the other way and you’ll arrive in Beer for a trip to the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves. For other days out nearby, try the Axe Valley Wildlife Park, Tunnel Tree Tops adventure park or The Donkey Sanctuary (all about 15 minutes’ drive).
