General

  • Award-winning and friendly park in south Devon
  • Spotlessly clean amenities
  • Thirteenth century pub close by

'Easy to get to and easy to explore from' is the main theme at award-winning and family-run Holmans Wood Holiday Park – it has easy access to the A38, is a mile from ancient market town Chudleigh, and has buses stopping outside on their way to Exeter, Newton Abbot and from there the whole of the south west.

Friendly and accommodating Holmans Wood is a 12-acre site among south Devon green hills and hedgerows, and with an eight-acre meadow and a wild woodland walk.

It has immaculately-kept loo and washroom facilities with free constant hot water; a fully-equipped launderette; an information room with a diary full of events, leaflets, magazines, books and maps; picnic tables and an undercover washing-up area. The kids' play area is well equipped with swings, table tennis, badminton and plenty of open space.

A well-stocked shop is five minutes' walk away and a traditional thirteenth century inn, the Highwayman's Haunt, serves excellent English food a very short trot away.

Friendly hosts and easy to find. WIFI was good and the facilities block was kept clean and tidy with plenty of free hot water in the showers.

The location was good for Haldon Forest, Exeter and the Dawlish to Teignmouth coast. Read previous comments about road noise but we were inside our Campervan and didn't hear a thing. The local pub is but a short walk down the road and it has a footpath so all good.

    Will definitely use again.

The welcome. The 'on pitch' services and toilet block. Site was not busy and was tidy. Watching the rabbits was entertaining!

    Disliked:

The lack of hardcore access onto hardstanding from the tarmac roadway did not make pitching easy as grass was very soft and turned to mud very quickly. Alternative pitches with easier access direct from roadway were available but not offered.

The owners and warden mike, were very helpful and lovely to deal with.
There were lots of choice on pitches at this time of year, so the wetter pitches were left alone.
The gravel and hard standing pitches are convenient with lots of space around them.
Which made moving our 7mtr beast easy.

This is a fairly modern site with an old fashion campsite twist, amenities and facilities were lovely, clean and very functional.

The old quarry play area is a wonderful way to use a man made area, the wild life is everywhere.
The van and static pitches have a lovely outlook over this area.

The local town and pubs (1.5 mile payment stroll) are very welcoming, the "Bishops Lacy" at the bottom of town was a lovely distraction from the seasonal weather.

We travelled 40mins to get here, and we will be back.

    Disliked:

Yes there is a little road noise, the A38 is very handy for weary travellers who have over 40mins to travel.

But seriously don't be put off, the wild life isn't.

Clean and tidy site and facilities. Friendly and helpful warden. Lovely scenery.

    Disliked:

The motorhome pitches could do with some gravel or paving to get into pitch as it was quite tricky getting the MH over the very boggy wet ground.

Local attractions

The position of Holmans Wood Holiday Park near the A38 means it's conveniently placed for piles of south Devon things to see and do as well as many holiday resorts and seaside towns. Both Exester and Newton Abbot are easily reached by the buses that stop on request outside the park.

Sandy beaches are at Dawlish, Paignton, Shaldon and Teignmouth; see also the old fishing village of Brixham, Torquay and its Kents Cavern, and popular Devon attractions like Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts.

Inland, have a day or two in Dartmoor, starting off at its gateway Bovey Tracey (home of the House of Marbles) and winding up at well-known village Widdecombe-in-the-Moor in Dartmoor's heart. Nearby Haldon Forest has 3500 acres of woods with walking, cycling and butterfly trails.

A day on the South Devon Railway, the longest railway in the south west, will take you along the River Dart valley from Buckfastleigh and Totnes among steamingly spectacular scenery; hop off at any stop to see more and make time for the museum at Buckfastleigh before setting off.

More very vintage Devon can be seen at Canonteign Falls, Powderham Castle and many historic houses and gardens, or take the kids along to a day they'll remember at Go Ape!, Pennywell Farm or the Crealy Great Adventure Park in Exeter.
