Meadowsweet Farm: Camping field

General

  • Rustic and peaceful sustainable farm site on the north Devon coast
  • A five-minute drive to Saunton Sands; 15 minutes to Barnstaple
  • Communal campfire and portable fire troughs; access to the Tarka Trail

Green-fingered guests will surely find like-minded folk at Meadowsweet Farm, on the north Devon coast. Bearing homegrown fruit and veg for the local community and rearing rare-breed animals such as the endangered Suffolk Punch horse, this site is a fast-track route back to nature five minutes’ drive from Saunton Sands and 15 minutes from Barnstaple. It's a place where the peace, sea breeze and sustainability mingle together to create a rural camping experience on a small eco-friendly farm.

If surfing ranks high on the list for your trip, you’ll be well set with the local swell on several sandy beaches within 20 minutes’ drive. And if walking or cycling is your favourite pursuit, you can head out over the sand dunes (a great setting for watching the sunset) or walk right onto the lengthy Tarka Trail for a self-guided cycling and walking tour over Devon’s cliffs and coves.

Friendly guests should find some good chat on site, as social and sensible souls can make use of the communal firepits (with wood available from the farm). And for when you feel like quality family time or gathering in a close-knit group, there are also portable fire troughs.

With no electricity, this off-grid site will take you nicely back to basics, with just simple facilities such as toilets, sinks and hot showers on site.

When you want to head into town, Braunton (five minutes’ drive) has several restaurants and a supermarket for food and a selection of pubs for a tipple. Surf shops, bike hire and guided nature walks with a local botanist are available too.

Site was very quiet so there was lots of room for the children to play. Facilities were basic but clean. Farmer Marko was very welcoming and always at hand for any queries.

    Disliked:

The only downside were the Toilets which were just portaloos . They are never really very pleasant even though these were kept very clean.

The campsite is lovely, peaceful and very wild. It's a great location if you have a car - 5 minute drive to Saunton Sands, 10 minutes to Croyde.
There are hot showers and fire pits provided, with the option to buy firewood (and seasonal veg) at the campsite (cash only!). Marco gave us a warm welcome, he showed us around the site and we also had a tour of the farmyard to see some of the animals.
It's small, but not too intimate, enough space for privacy but not so big you have to walk for ages to get to the loos.
The toilets are portaloos, and are as you would expect them to be - a bit smelly but they're fine - more the guests to blame than the campsite.
It is unfortunately close to the road, however it didn't distrupt our nights sleep.

Location for Saunton Sands and sand dunes

    Disliked:

Prepare yourself for a big shock as you drive in. The field is tiny and you can't park near your tent so you have to carry everything across uneven ground. Disgusting portaloos that look like they never get cleaned and have no toilet roll. Right next to a busy road that is always very noisy - there was even a car crash right outside as we arrived. We closed the front gate to keep our children safe but the owner Marko arrived after we had spent 2 1/2 hours setting up and he was very confrontational and rude about the gate. Then one of our small children followed a cat towards his barn and Marko had another go at us - asking to speak to my husband in his tool shed! I made the peace and said we would leave the next morning and Marko was then quite nice and showed the children his farm animals, we even got a refund the the next 2 nights we had booked. The following morning we packed away at 7am and left as quickly as we could to move to a bigger and safer site. It ruined our holiday, we had to move to a location in the middle of nowhere so we didn't get to do the beach as we had planned. I have never been made to feel to threatened, unwelcome, unsafe and uncomfortable before. This site is one to avoid at all costs. We have camped at 5 different sites throughout August and none have been this bad.

The campsite was very nice - provided fire pits, we had a small gazebo up at the front of the tent, the showers worked well, and it was a very short drive to a couple of very nice sandy beaches and the very pretty village of Croyde.

    Disliked:

The toilets were porta loos and as such were not the best.

Local attractions

Nature likes to spread its feathers in this area and it shows… almost on your doorstep are Swanpool Marsh Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ walk), which makes a nice contrast to clifftop curves of the north Devon coast and the steep drops along the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast (45 minutes' drive).

The beach is calling too: at Saunton Sands (five minutes), paddleboarding, sailing and wakeboarding are common pursuits. And depending on your skill level, you could whip out (or rent) a surfboard or bodyboard for days at Croyde (10 minutes) or Woolacombe (20 minutes).

Perhaps create a coastal bucket list, as this area harbours many National Trust sites, from the clifftops of Baggy Point (15 minutes) to the horsedrawn carriage collection at the peaceful neoclassical Arlington Court (35 minutes).

Kids tagging along? They’ll likely have a roaring time at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (half an hour). Find more rides, this time farm-themed, at The BIG Sheep (half an hour).

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (12.0 miles)

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (9.2 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (13.3 miles)
