General

  • On a working farm in the north Devon countryside
  • A five-minute drive to Saunton Sands
  • Free hot showers and well-kept amenities

A five-minute drive to Saunton Sands... then back for lashings of free hot water under the shower and settling down on your chosen pitch to spark up a campfire under the north Devon sky... the peeps at Branton's Fairlinch Camping reckon they do a 'classic camping experience' here, and we reckon they're right.

Set on a working farm in north Devon coastal countryside, Fairlinch has its camping in an open field that's actively farmed throughout the year and left unmarked so that guests can pick their own pitch (take your time; there are some splendid views). It's a friendly place where the team is always on hand to answer questions or dispense info for guests to get the most out of their hol whatever their tastes (beaches for us).

The amenities – powerful electric showers and strong flush loos – are cleanly kept and there's also ice pack freezing or mobile charging if you need it. And – of course – both campfires and barbecues are allowed.

The campsite has a lovely relaxed feel, from checking in to leaving, no bells and whistles but just what we needed and a great view across the dunes to Saunton from most of the field. Toilets and showers were clean and very useable, camp fires allowed!
Will be going again, can't wait!..

Right from the start with the welcome from the owners to the relaxed atmosphere of the camp it was a great place to pitch up. A perfect location to access beaches and towns and very reasonably priced as there was no limit to the size of the pitch. In addition the owner was present throughout the day always checking in with the guests for a general chat and to make sure everything was ok. In my opinion, I think some of the other camp site owners should stay here and learn a few tips on how it should be run. All round a great stay and a definite re-visit next year. Cheers Guys.

    Disliked:

No dislikes but a few helpful tips like a light in the washing up area and some duck boards in the showers would be good.

The fabulous uninterrupted views. Relaxed atmosphere and plenty of choice of where to pitch our tent. Excellent welcome on Reception. Location - just the beach side of Braunton which is a real bottleneck at peak times. Can walk into Braunton along the pavement if you want to go into town for an evening meal/drink.

The staff were very friendly and the facilities were clean and more than adequate. The site was well drained and it was a shame the drizzle came down just as I was breaking down my tent. But I cannot lay that problem at the door of the campsite!

It was the first time I had been back to Braunton /Saunton since 1965 and it will not be 52 year before I am back .

The view from the top of the field. Easy to find a spot to pitch up. Surprisingly peaceful at night despite how busy it was this year. Will be returning again next year

    Disliked:

The queues for the showers & toilets. Men using the ladies & not being considerate with their aim! Two fields open this year and only 6 showers between both sexes so you can imagine how dirty & hair clogged they got. Didn't experience this last year!
Grass could have been mowed shorter but that was just a niggle really.
Staff on the gate could be more informative & clued up about the location & amenities.
Also we prepaid our stay & the young man on the gate tried charging me again for my children!

Directions

Take junction 27 off the M5. Turn onto the North Devon Link Road and proceed to Barnstaple. Take a right turn over the new bridge and follow the signs to Braunton. At Braunton, take a right turn onto the B3231 towards Saunton and Croyde. You will find Fairlinch Camping on the right as you leave the outskirts of the village.

Local attractions

To the beach first, natch: the four magnif sandy surfing beaches of Saunton Sands, Putsborough, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe are all under 15 minutes' drive from Fairlinch Camping, and surf schools are around close by too if you haven't yet dipped a toe in the foam.

The two closest villages to Fairlinch are Braunton and Croyde, both with a good choice of shops, pubs and restaurants, and both on the South West Coast Path for hikes among more magnif scenery.

More hikes as well as bike rides are at the nearby Tarka Trail, the 180-mile route taken by the eponymous otter; if you're picking it up at Braunton, the 31-mile section between between Braunton and Meeth is level and car-free so should suit all cycling sorts.
