An excellent campervan setup

  • Rural site two miles from Croyde beach and the South West Coast Path
  • A 15-minute drive from Woolacombe beach and Saunton Sands
  • Communal firepit and flower farm on site; pubs and shop nearby
A day in the surf or strolling along the South West Coast Path, before gathering around the communal firepit – sounds good? If so, you’d best book in at Crowborough Farm, a peaceful wild-style site within 15 minutes’ drive of several Devon beaches including Woolacombe beach and Saunton Sands. Croyde (five minutes’ drive) is your nearest beach – and a great place to hit the waves, whether you’re an experienced surfer or just taking your first steps with one of the local surf schools. You can also join the South West Coast Path in the village for walks towards Baggy Point (a place that's also popular with climbers). The pitches at this site are part of an organic farm, and they’re set up in wildflower meadows with views across the sea to Lundy Island, as well as often having excellent sunsets. It’s a proper back-to-basics set-up, with simple facilities including bespoke mobile compost toilets made by local tradesmen using local materials. There’s also a shower block with hot water and a washing-up area, but please note there’s no drinking water supply. For cosy evenings, head to the wooden benches around the firepit; you’ll need to bring your own firewood if you fancy starting a blaze, or arrange some with the owners. The farm also has a sustainable (and colourful) flower farm that you’re welcome to wander around. The local village, Georgeham, is under five minutes’ walk from the farm. It’s got a village shop with produce such as fresh bread, local eggs, vegetables and dairy, and a post office. There are two pubs in the village that serve excellent food and often host live bands in the evenings.

What customers say

This is a tranquil, back-to-nature campsite with beautiful scenery and dark skies. Reviewers praise the quiet atmosphere, even on bank holidays, and the "wild camping" feel. Facilities, including hot solar showers and compost toilets, are generally well-regarded. Its location is ideal for walking to local pubs and shops, and within walking distance or a short drive of beaches like Croyde and Putsborough. Some minor issues with pitch leveling and waste disposal were noted, but overall feedback is overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a desire to return.

Liked There was a really lovely atmosphere. Plenty of space, nice compost loos and very good solar showers (it was a really sunny day). The site is really simple with beautiful views. It’s very close to the village where there is a shop and a pub

Disliked No hot water for washing up. It’s a long but lovely walk to the beach.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Having no restrictions on having a designated pitch number/ space or where to pitch up. Being allowed to find a spot in the field and use it. Meant there was distance between you and your neighbour which was quiet and peaceful.
Basic but worked - showers were clean and toilets were as described

Really nice pub only a few minutes walk down the hill. Friendly staff and good selection of foods / drinks

Few minutes drive to croyde very convenient for early surfing

Local attractions

You’ll want to start with the beaches of course – perhaps heading into Croyde itself (five minutes’ drive) or setting off to places like Putsborough (10 minutes) or Saunton Sands (15 minutes). Ilfracombe (15 minutes) is another local favourite, with beaches accessed via tunnels carved in the rock; you can also board boat trips to Lundy Island from here. A little further along the coast, you’ll get to Exmoor National Park, where you may like to take a walk around the Valley of Rocks (45 minutes), ride the cliff railway in Lynmouth (45 minutes) or visit National Trust - Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (half an hour). Watermouth Castle (25 minutes) and Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (half an hour) are excellent options if you’ve got kids to entertain. This area has lots of options for walks taking in either coast or countryside; for bike rides, a great choice is the traffic-free Tarka Trail from Barnstaple (25 minutes), where you can hire bikes for all ages.
