  • Family site in Dartmoor National Park, seven miles from the coast
  • A couple of minutes' walk from a 16th-century pub
  • Teign valley views; shop; high-season weekend takeaway with breakfasts
'Feral children are welcome,' say the amicable owners of Hennock Hideaways near Devon's Bovey Tracey – and so this should be a site of happy days for their well-behaved grownups too. (Dogs that can behave around livestock are most welcome here as well.) While the kids are doing endless and happily tiring laps around the Hennock camping field, the big folk can get on with what's important in life, such as sparking up a campfire then cheerfully considering where to visit next on their Devon break: Hennock Hideaways is just inside Dartmoor National Park, about seven miles from the coast and less than 10 miles from Dawlish. Sitting back with a beer and submerging oneself in the Teign valley views might be a considerably clever option from here too… The site has basic facilities including four main toilets, two hot showers and a washing-up area (you're welcome to bring your own camping shower and toilet too). In high season, an on-site takeaway opens up on weekends only, selling fresh barista-style coffee and breakfasts. Take them back to your digs if you like, or settle at the outdoor seating for food with a view. Rather take a little walk? Pay a visit to the site's pygmy goats, which guests can feed. The family-friendly atmosphere, Devon ciders, real ales, wine and well-priced pub food of the local pub, a 16th-century freehouse, a two-minute walk away; cooked breakfasts are often available here too. On site, there's also a fully stocked 24-hour honesty shop that accepts card or cash payments. In the shop, there are limited lockers which can be used to charge phones or battery packs; they can be hired for 24 hours for a small fee. The site also has a communal fridge and freezer and a couple of electric points can be used to blow up air beds. (Hennock can't take tourers or large motorhomes because of its secluded location and narrow lanes; please also be careful with wide vehicles and sports cars when approaching the site.)

Liked: What a little campsite gem! We had a lovely night here in the campervan with our two young children. The children loved the park, zip line and meeting the goats! They were skipping everywhere and saying this was their 'best campervan trip ever' We loved being able to BBQ and keep warm with a fire until late. We will definitely be back, kids are asking when already 🙂 thank you hennock hideaways!

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay here. There was lots of space for our children and a lovely open aspect with a beautiful view. Our children enjoyed playing cricket, football and rugby aswell as playing the play park with other children. We stayed for 7 nights and at times the site was busy but still very pleasant and plenty of space. We had no issues getting a shower despite the site being busy. There was a fairly steep hill down to the facilities but that was no problem for us. We appreciated the use of the communal fidge and freezer as well as the charging lockers. There are narrows lanes to the site and it is a little out of the way but that caused us no issues.

Liked: Lovely site, honestly shop, play areas for all age groups, nice showers and toilets, able to buy breakfast at the weekend, great views, lovely walks and a very nice pub 2 minutes walk away

Disliked: Went with a small dog always on a lead, didn't like the amount of dogs just running around that's the only negative thing I can say

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Toilet facilities were on point! There were so many to choose from! There was a static cabin with two bathrooms. In then were actual flushable toilets, gravity operated heated showers, sink, bench. Lots of space to get ready. Then you have the scroll thrones, bathrooms in sheds, they're definitely good. Then there's the poo room, this is just a toilet in an outhouse, but it's marketed as the space for when you need a little more time. The pitches aren't marked, land where you need, make sure you aren't too close to other users a d set up. The allowance of two tents per pitch was perfect for us. I came with my sister, niece (2) and my 3 children (11, 9, 5). My sister and niece had their own smaller tent and we had a larger one. It meant that we could help each other out. There is an honest shop, with large communal fridge and freezer meaning you can refreeze cooler packs. The honesty shop was a little lacking when we came, there was a can fridge with sofa's, but it was empty. There was no fruit in the free fruit basket. However that being said, I have a feeling over the weekend when the site is busy, it would have been fuller. And I am sure, had we needed something specific and asked, they would have either found it or pointed where to get it. The host was lovely, explained where things were and was very welcoming. There were signs to say that over the weekends there is a take away cafe that offers breakfast goodies and real coffees. So I think when we return, we will need to make sure it's over a weekend. There is a great play area for older kids. It has zip line, trampolines and other goodies. There is a second area for small kids, has ride on toys, toddler climb on frame. There is also a big tree with rope swing, swing rope and rope ladder on which was a massive highlight. All in all, we will return.

Disliked: I still do not know where the washing up area is. Majority of site is on a hill. Bring grippy mats for under your air beds lol.

Liked: It was not the first time we stayed at this campsite and it won’t be the last. The campsite is very spacious, has clean facilities and a playground for children. Although it was quite busy, there was a very good vibe and everyone enjoyed their stay. The view is spectacular, there is no other noise than nature and the drive was so fun on the narrow streets.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: This place is just great. Not the first time I've been here, which should say a lot. Plenty of space if you have kids and there's things for the kids to do on site, so you can let them run wild. But, there's still plenty of space not to be bothered by kids. Views are great. Showers are hot, toilets are ok. Goats are awesome. Freezer for ice blocks and fridge for day to day food. Honesty shop for anything you need in a hurry. Particularly good site for botanists, as you'll get some very close up views of the local flora as you nagivate the surrounding roads of the site 😆 Good for amateur geologists too, cos there's seemingly rocks 2-3 inches down, everywhere you want to put your tent pegs ;-) Bring your tough tent pegs lol. Very highly likely I will come back again.

Local attractions

Hennock Hideaways is only two miles from the A38 so has easy access to many Devon attractions inland and down towards the south coast (feel free to tackle the north Devon coast too: it's less than two hours away). Very close by, a local park is in Hennock village and three reservoirs are within a mile or two, one of which is a trout fly fishery. Pike fishing and boat hire are also available. Two miles away is Bovey Tracey with shops, a few more pubs, takeaways and a craft centre along with a pretty park with walks by the River Teign. And talking of walks... the letterboxing, hikes and tor-to-tor walks of Dartmoor are very close to base; small sorts heading here can also ride Dartmoor ponies. The south Devon coast of seaside town Teignmouth is about seven miles away: follow the coastal road from here to Torbay and then Brixham, where you can see the Hennock Hideaways' own fishing trawler the Katy Jane.
