  • Laidback site near the Devon coast welcoming families and dogs
  • 15 minutes' drive from Westward Ho! surfing beach
  • Take a boat trip, spot seals and dive off Lundy Island
Clifftop walks and river trips, rockpooling and stargazing, surfing beaches and the simple pleasure of cooking up a feast with friends around a firepit… There aren't too many spots where you can tick all those boxes, but it's all there at Treyhill Farm. This laidback, privately-run site is in the hills of North Devon, surrounded by stunning countryside. Come here to slow down and spend some quality time outdoors, whether you're on your own or with your family, other half or a small group – dogs are also very welcome too. A peaceful base this is, with spacious pitches and a friendly vibe. And one more plus: there's a dog-friendly pub within five minutes' drive of the site for a beer or two. The Treyhill Farm team care about the details: flowers and herbs around the grounds add scent and colour; fresh tea towels are in the washing-up station; secure bike storage is provided for cyclists. Across the cobbled courtyard, the shared bathroom is bright, clean and cosy, kitted out with a big hot shower and an armchair. You want to feast alfresco, smelling the salty tang on the breeze mingle with the woodsmoke as you sip a glass of wine? Go ahead, the folks at the farm will supply you with pots, pans, firewood and fire-starting kits… plus recipes if you need some tips on firepit cuisine. And a corkscrew.

Hirondelle shepherd's hut

Liked It was a beautiful location, with great views, tranquility and a nice space to yourself. An Easter egg and fresh milk were provided which was a nice touch. The owners were pleasant. It’s nicely laid out and instructions before arrival were good.

Disliked I think when paying £140 for one night I expected a higher level of accommodation. I was very disappointed by the level of cleanliness and facilities. The toilet was only to be used for liquids which I only found out after booking. This is not convenient with a toddler. The place felt damp inside and the sheets were dirty with lots of hairs on. There was no lighter for the fire (ran out of gas) and had to request a replacement. You have to pay for log wood, which I feel like should have been included especially for the price. The stuff inside was shoddy. I put a bag on the table and it collapsed with very little weight. The toaster is broken and almost caught on fire which is a fire hazard. The spatula for cooking was melted which probably was a bit of a health hazards with level of microplastics. There was dust and hairs or corners and cobwebs. There was no shower gel dispenser which I feel like is a real basic. The roller blinds were slightly broken and didn’t go up and down with ease. This place could do with a deep clean. The tap didn’t work properly on arrival which was sorted promptly, but should have been checked before arrival. No WiFi.

From the manager: Dear Kirsty,

I can only apologise for the lack of response to you and your feedback. There has been a recent change of management at Treyhill Farm and although I’m sure the delay is disappointing - I would like to assure you and future guests that all issues raised have been addressed.
- the toaster has been replaced
- the table has been replaced
- the spatula (and any other dated items) have been replaced
- the Shepherd’s Hut has had a professional clean and has fresh linen, duvets and pillows.
- I have brought the price down to 120.00 per night and that includes a bag of wood, kindling and firelighters for the wood burner and outdoor fire pit.
- There is body wash in the shower now too.

I appreciate the liquids only toilet is a challenge and I hope I have made that much clearer upon booking. I am also in the process of getting quotes to build a compost toilet within that field. Same with the WiFi, I’ve installed some ‘boosters’ from the main house which seem to be doing the trick so far!

I apologise again that your stay wasn’t up to standard and I understand that, sadly, we probably won’t see you at Treyhill Farm in the future but I wanted to let you know that I appreciate your feedback as I’ve been able to tackle them head on in my new role since taking over in May.

With best wishes,

Jessica

Local attractions

Between the North Devon National Landscape and the Hartland Heritage Coast, this is true walking country. From Instow (10 minutes' drive), join the Tarka Trail, a wildlife-packed route inspired by the otter's journey in Henry Williamson's novel. Follow it to Westward Ho! (15 minutes from the site) and cool off in the sea; the farm owners also suggest surfers head here, instead of busier beaches further north. You can take lessons in the art of not falling off various watercraft at the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Bideford (15 minutes), while for further thrills, kayaking, laser tag and assault courses are also on the menu. For gentler times on water, head to the old riverside town of Appledore (15 minutes) for a boat cruise. If you fancy frying a fish over that firepit, choose between the Torridge and Taw rivers, as well as the big briny. Bideford is a popular launch point for sea fishing and for trips to Lundy Island: this wild outcrop in the Atlantic attracts all kinds of adventurers from seal spotters to wreck divers and has spectacular sunsets to round it all off.
