Skern Lodge: Night time

General

  • Calm site in the grounds of a north Devon outdoor activity centre
  • A 15-minute stroll from Appledore; 10 minutes' drive from Westward Ho!
  • Estuary views; watersport sessions available for guests

Skern Lodge is a popular outdoor activity centre set on the edge of the quiet coastal village of Appledore. With 22 acres of land to its name and direct access to the tidal waters of the Taw and Torridge estuary, this site is a prime pick for relaxing north Devon hols in a gorgeous natural setting.

The pitches at Skern Lodge are in an open field and have plenty of space between them. Toilets, showers and a washing-up point are available here, but other than that this is a back to basics site free of unnecessary frills. The site is keen to keep its impact on the environment to an absolute minimum – once you've seen these serene surrounds, there's a strong chance you'll be keen to do the same.

Head to reception upon arrival and let them know if you're interested in booking watersports sessions – rafting, river kayaking and surfing can all be tried out with full supervision from expert instructors. Appledore village centre is a 15-minute stroll away – head here for a trip to the pub, to sample local grub at an independent deli or simply for a coastal stroll. Bideford (10 minutes' drive) is also close by – make tracks here to catch the ferry out to Lundy Island (crossing time about two hours).

Beautiful views, nice quiet pitch, clean facilities, friendly and accommodating staff. Booked the swimming pool for an hour and was very impressed with the lifeguard who struck a beautiful balance of being friendly and chatty and putting us at ease with her presence, without intruding on family time. Lots of activities on site and lots to do within an easy distance of Skern Lodge. Dog friendly site in every sense of the word. Was pleased we could tie the dog up pool side. Overall very pleased and will most definitely be coming back.

Wow! Superb views over the beach and estuary. Lovely flat camping field which even has benches and a little earth mound seating area. Fantastic facilities kept very clean, and loads of activities available if you want to try things out. Couldn't have asked for anything better!

Loved the level field area and the views, being close to the estuary, easy to walk into Appledore along the waters edge, being able to take our well behaved dog was a bonus. The showers and toilets were spotless and plenty of hot water.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately was woken at 6am on the Sunday by a very ignorant family who seemed to think it was okay to start cleaning there tent and shouting at each other and allowing their dog to bark, just because they want to be awake early talking like there was no one else on the campsite was very selfish. Packed up and left early.

Friendly atmosphere and lovely simple, clean hut to stay in. A joy to have an en-suite toilet with a small child. Lovely to have the opportunity to use the on-site pool twice a week too. Great location for easy access to the North Devon coastline. Highly recommended.

Openess of pitch field; there was loads of room even with a number of other campers, the view, facilities were clean and very adequate, it was lovely and quiet. We would definitely stay again as this was our second time staying. (Shame the weather turned and many campers decided to leave early including us but thats the risk of camping).
