Short-Eared bell tent

Liked Chris, the owner, was lovely and nothing was too much. He meets you at the car park on arrival to take your bags for you. We felt extremely welcomed by Chris.

We had the most wonderful time, we stayed in the bell tent, our first experience, and it was wonderful. We had a fire pit with plenty of wood available, we used this as it started to go dark and we made s’mores. We had a barbecue with coals provided which we used for our burgers in the evening. There was a kitchen that was fully equipped with every utensil you could possibly need.
The bed was very comfortable and we both had a really great sleep.
We also used the single futons to put outside to stargaze.

No wifi and signal limited - however this is exactly what we wanted as we wanted to remove technology from our lives for 24 hours.
We are excited to return in the future!

Disliked The only thing we didn’t like was hearing other people - however that was down to them being quite loud during the evening, but they were far enough away for us to still have our privacy.

Short-Eared bell tent

Liked We had a wonderful stay at Owl Valley in their bell tent 'Short Eared'. The tent came with everything you could need, our own outside kitchen, fire pit, picnic table
and compost loo n shower.
The owners had decorated the area as it was my sons birthday whilst we were there. So very generous.
The lift of our stuff from the car park to the tent was very much appreciated!

We loved the quiet private nature reserve by a babbling stream but only a short drive to Bideford, shops and beach.

The kids loved the rope swing by the stream.

Steves shack had lots to entertain guests from a pool table to a piano to books n games. The honesty shop had many things if you run low.

A little slice of heaven!

Disliked Very hard to find anything we disliked as its such a lovely place.

Obviously you dont have mobile signal/WiFi which is great for peace n quiet. If you need to contact owner you need to be offsite where you get a signal. We ran low on sawdust but when we messaged he was very quickly filled up for us - thank you!

Also very minor the tent instructions mentioned a freezer in the honesty shop. Tried to find it but actually didn't need to as the owner very kindly changed the freezer packs every day in the provided cool box. Thank you!

Short-Eared bell tent

Liked We stayed in the Bell tent, and it was comfortable and cosy. Enjoyed having a personal kitchen and hot shower. Loads of wildfire in the valley, and it's peaceful even though you're so close to the local town. Great idea to have a games/pool shack for the unpredictable British weather! Hope to visit again soon.

What customers say

Guests consistently praise the beautiful, peaceful, and natural surroundings, highlighting the thoughtful design and cleanliness of accommodations and facilities. The hosts, particularly Chris, are frequently commended for being exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and attentive, often going above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay. Many enjoyed the "off-grid" experience with no signal or Wi-Fi, finding it ideal for relaxation and reconnecting with nature. The hot tubs, games shack, and outdoor kitchens were popular features. A few minor points for improvement were noted, including suggestions for more lighting in the games shack and a desire for device charging facilities.

Long-eared geodesic dome

Liked It was very peaceful, the setting is stunning, the hosts were lovely and helpful from arrival to departure, the hot tub water is changed daily and pre heated for you to adjust to your preferred temperature (by adding cold water). The sound of the owls was lovely at night and the trickling stream was nice to listen to. Steves shack is a cool feature and we enjoyed a few games of pool and tried to play darts. The cooking area was well stocked and we enjoyed a meal cooked on the stove on both evenings of our stay. Lots of robins that land really close to you whilst you are relaxing outside your accommodation.

Disliked There were a few small things we feel could have improved the overall experience for us, the main thing was the no electricity, we feel that 'glamping' should be a more luxurious experience with ample facilities to charge devices, watch TV etc, the toilet being compostable and not a flush as well as the outdoor shower which didn't get hot, lukewarm at most isn't up to 'glamping' standards. We aren't used to having to go outside to go to the toilet first thing in the morning and we felt that we have been to campsites with better facilities. The games shack didn't get enough light to be able to play darts, the pool table had a bit more light but would have had more if the perspex roof panels had been cleared of the build up of leaves. We tried all the fairy lights, torches and candles but it didn't really make much difference.
The bed was hard and we could feel the wooden frame under the mattress so had sore hips the following days from sleeping on it, also there were discrepancies from the photos advertised on the website and what was actually in the accommodation, the flooring was different, there was no mirror, the yellow sofa which was only in the last couple of photos was wobbly on one side.
There were a lot of spiders webs in both the games shack and the shower/toilet area which is to be expected given it's location so if you aren't a spider person this may not be the best place for you.
There is very little phone signal which we weren't too fussed about but some people might not like that.
I don't want to put people off at all because it's a nice place but these are the honest points to help others make a decision if this place is for them.

Tawny cabin (hot tub)

Liked Fantastic little private cabin in quiet countryside. There's a little space and foliage between the different spots, and they provide all the basics for cooking on the little gas stove.

Toilet was much nicer than I'd expected a composting toilet to be.

Chris was lovely to chat to as well.

Local attractions

If you haven’t had enough of walking from your excursions on the South West Coast Path and Tarka Trail, never fear: Owl Valley is 40 minutes’ drive from Exmoor National Park, where there are plenty of trails and long-distance routes. There’s also canoeing, sea kayaking, fishing, horse riding and mountain biking to get stuck into, and the less active can pay a visit to Dunster Castle, take a trip on the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway funicular or the West Somerset Railway steam train, or bring the kids to Exmoor Zoo or Watermouth Castle Theme Park. For those who like living at least part of their life on the water, there’s loads to do close to Owl Valley. Have a go at kayaking, body boarding, surfing and rafting in Westward Ho!, or climb aboard a boat in Ilfracombe to spy out dolphins, seals and porpoises on sea safari. A visit to Clovelly is a must – the stunning seaside village, 20 minutes from Owl Valley, has oodles of character. It’s also entirely traffic free, so you can wander the cobbled streets sharing the roads with donkeys and human-powered sledges, and looking out over Bideford bay.
