  • Small peaceful site on a private nature reserve in north Devon
  • Two miles from Bideford and within 10 minutes of award-winning beaches
  • Within easy reach of the Tarka Trail
Want to get away from the chaos of modern life without sacrificing too many of your creature comforts? At Owl Valley Glamping, a peaceful site less than two miles from the town of Bideford in north Devon, you get the best of both worlds: no internet, no electricity – just somewhere comfy to spend your break. What a hoot. Owl Valley is paradise for walkers, nature spotters and sand fans: the site is a 10-minute drive from the beach at Westward Ho! and under an hour from the north Devon coast. The 32-mile traffic-free Tarka Trail for walkers and cyclists is within easy reach, passing through nearby Bideford, and there are plenty of walks along the South West Coast Path too. Back on site, explore the private nature reserve that you’ll be calling home during your stay: wander through the woodlands, sit on the banks of the pond or stream and, at all times, keep your eyes peeled for wildflowers, butterflies, woodland birds and the occasional deer. When it's time for dinner, fire up your barbecue or get that campfire going – you can pick up supplies and essentials in Bideford, or just skip cooking altogether and have a bite at one of the quayside town’s restaurants. Don’t expect to be bingeing Netflix in the evenings – instead, kick back and turn your gaze to the stars, unwinding with the sounds of owls’ hooting and the stream running through the site playing in your ears.

What customers say

This campsite offers a peaceful, off-grid escape immersed in nature, with many guests highlighting the hosts' exceptional helpfulness and warmth. Accommodation is described as cosy, clean, and well-equipped, with the wood-fired hot tubs and games room being particular highlights. The lack of signal and Wi-Fi is frequently praised as a benefit for digital detox. While minor issues like potential bugs were noted, the overwhelming sentiment is positive, with many guests expressing a desire to return.

Long-eared geodesic dome

Liked It was very peaceful, the setting is stunning, the hosts were lovely and helpful from arrival to departure, the hot tub water is changed daily and pre heated for you to adjust to your preferred temperature (by adding cold water). The sound of the owls was lovely at night and the trickling stream was nice to listen to. Steves shack is a cool feature and we enjoyed a few games of pool and tried to play darts. The cooking area was well stocked and we enjoyed a meal cooked on the stove on both evenings of our stay. Lots of robins that land really close to you whilst you are relaxing outside your accommodation.

Disliked There were a few small things we feel could have improved the overall experience for us, the main thing was the no electricity, we feel that 'glamping' should be a more luxurious experience with ample facilities to charge devices, watch TV etc, the toilet being compostable and not a flush as well as the outdoor shower which didn't get hot, lukewarm at most isn't up to 'glamping' standards. We aren't used to having to go outside to go to the toilet first thing in the morning and we felt that we have been to campsites with better facilities. The games shack didn't get enough light to be able to play darts, the pool table had a bit more light but would have had more if the perspex roof panels had been cleared of the build up of leaves. We tried all the fairy lights, torches and candles but it didn't really make much difference.
The bed was hard and we could feel the wooden frame under the mattress so had sore hips the following days from sleeping on it, also there were discrepancies from the photos advertised on the website and what was actually in the accommodation, the flooring was different, there was no mirror, the yellow sofa which was only in the last couple of photos was wobbly on one side.
There were a lot of spiders webs in both the games shack and the shower/toilet area which is to be expected given it's location so if you aren't a spider person this may not be the best place for you.
There is very little phone signal which we weren't too fussed about but some people might not like that.
I don't want to put people off at all because it's a nice place but these are the honest points to help others make a decision if this place is for them.

Tawny cabin (hot tub)

Liked Fantastic little private cabin in quiet countryside. There's a little space and foliage between the different spots, and they provide all the basics for cooking on the little gas stove.

Toilet was much nicer than I'd expected a composting toilet to be.

Chris was lovely to chat to as well.

Long-eared geodesic dome

Liked Wow! What an incredible place. A real gem! Chris and his family have created a real treasure of a spot at Owl Valley. The little touches were so well thought out and it really felt like luxury. Our kids had the best time adventuring and it was encouraged! The shack is brilliant! Chris says nature did all the hard work, but I don’t think it was just nature, him and his family do too. Thank you so so much for having us. We will see you soon!

Disliked That we had to leave…

Local attractions

If you haven’t had enough of walking from your excursions on the South West Coast Path and Tarka Trail, never fear: Owl Valley is 40 minutes’ drive from Exmoor National Park, where there are plenty of trails and long-distance routes. There’s also canoeing, sea kayaking, fishing, horse riding and mountain biking to get stuck into, and the less active can pay a visit to Dunster Castle, take a trip on the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway funicular or the West Somerset Railway steam train, or bring the kids to Exmoor Zoo or Watermouth Castle Theme Park. For those who like living at least part of their life on the water, there’s loads to do close to Owl Valley. Have a go at kayaking, body boarding, surfing and rafting in Westward Ho!, or climb aboard a boat in Ilfracombe to spy out dolphins, seals and porpoises on sea safari. A visit to Clovelly is a must – the stunning seaside village, 20 minutes from Owl Valley, has oodles of character. It’s also entirely traffic free, so you can wander the cobbled streets sharing the roads with donkeys and human-powered sledges, and looking out over Bideford bay.
