  • Eco-camping site in North Devon with spectacular Torridge Valley views
  • A 20-minute drive to The BIG Sheep; 25 minutes to Westward Ho! beach
  • Wildlife, walks and edible garden on site; close to pubs and shops
Fancy upping the family’s green credentials while taking in the spectacular beauty of the North Devon countryside? A camping break at Dipple Farm near Bideford might just be what you’re looking for. With lovely views over the Torridge Valley towards Dartmoor, this is an eco-friendly spot with a wild camping vibe on a family-owned working farm. Straight from your pitch you can wander through wild meadows to Dipple Water for paddling and family games of pooh sticks. There’s also a large field over there where kids can run around safely or play football, and paths lead to peaceful walks along the Torridge river. There’s quite a complement of livestock on site; chickens and ducks roam freely and there are horses and sheep in neighbouring fields. If you get lucky, you might see deer, or you can stay up late (quietly) to watch badgers rummaging in the hedgerows. During the day buzzards wheel overhead, kingfishers flit across the river, and owls fly out at dusk. You could spend the whole day just watching the wildlife really… As for facilities, there are device-charging points in the West Barn, along with a dedicated fridge shelf, freezer space and free freezer packs. There’s a clothes line and laundry service available too. And those green credentials? The water you drink is from the farm’s borehole and additive-free. Each pitch has its own designated firepit, with wood and kindling from the farm’s woodland sold on site. You can pick seasonal goodies from the edible garden, like fresh herbs, salad leaves and strawberries. There are composting loos and well-kitted out bathrooms – both made with wood harvested on site – and washing-up points (only to be used with eco-friendly cleaning products).

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Relaxed feel, lovely views, plenty of clean, non smelly compost wcs, showers and washing up areas. Level grass pitches. I was the only camper the night I stayed. You can walk to the river and water meadow through the farm. I didn’t use any of the facilities in the barn but they looked comprehensive. Carol and Steve helpful and friendly

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What a great site. We were greated by the owner Carol to show us our pitch options. The compost toilet was and showers were clean and lots of hot water. There was a sink area for washing up and a barn with charging point lockers and microwave, fridges. Also logs to purchase for onsite fire pits. My twins loved the ice creams we could buy. The urn of hot water was handy in the bad weather to get a hot drink quickly. There was lots of land to walk around and explore nature. The owners were easily contactable with any questions or concerns and lots of info left out about what's local to visit which was great. The twins loved seeing the baby shallows in the barn.

Disliked: Only that we made the decision to leave early due to the high winds but you can't predict the weather. We were offered a warm dry space if needed due to the bad weather which was so nice of the owners.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: We were the only people on the campsite which was lovely. Carol was extremely friendly and helpful, explaining where everything was and offering advice on places to visit nearby. The facilities were very clean, eco-friendly and well-designed. We would really recommend the 20-30 minute well-signed walk along the bank of the River Torridge which runs at the boundary of the farm. We bought a dozen fresh eggs at a very reasonable price and were very well looked after. Thank you Carol and Steve!

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: 12/10. Would recomend. Down a small country lane there's your own little hillside paridice. There's the stunning evening view over the small valley, no noisy neighbours (if you don't mind the sheep), the cleanest and best looked after amenities (showers untested but looked awesome), a communal fridge and kettle for those desperate moments, a handful of levelled (and adorably named) pitches, local produce (I can vouch for the sausages). While I didn't have time to explore the area I have it on good authority it's interesting and well looked after. Carol and Co have done a wonderful job. This will be my go to campsite for the area.

Disliked: Should have stayed longer

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: peaceful apart from the wind-rustled trees and distant sheep :o) with level ground for the tent and a wood burner if needed, with a good sized bag of logs plus kindling and fire-lighters for about a tenner from reception, as well as a range of things that may get left at home, lockable phone-charging boxes and all the info you need. The walk down to the tree-banked river on freshly mown paths through wild meadows is very relaxing, and the one large area at the river's edge is perfect for a picnic. The toilets and shower and sinks are all eco-style and very well looked after, well the whole site is! A lovely place, cheers!

Local attractions

Travelling with the kids? Then the first stop is probably the beach. Westward Ho! (25 minutes’ drive) is well geared-up for families, with sand, rockpools and calm water for swimming. Bude (35 minutes) has a seafront summer pool and lots of ice-cream kiosks, and novices can take surfing lessons at Widemouth Bay (40 minutes). Animal-loving families can cuddle goats and watch sheep racing at The BIG Sheep (20 minutes), and there are thrills and spills aplenty on rides at The Milky Way Adventure Park (15 minutes). And if all that doesn’t tire them out sufficiently, spend the day on the rope courses at Skern Lodge Outdoor Activity Centre (25 minutes). For a change of pace or a grown-up day out, have a look around the lovely waterside village of Clovelly (15 minutes), packed with cosy pubs and indie shops, or head to Dartington Crystal Ltd (25 minutes) for a guided tour of the glassmaking workshop. There's also a special treat nearby for golfers: the chance to play on England's oldest course at Royal North Devon Golf Club (25 minutes).
