- Cosy shepherd's hut: as seen on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces 2016
- 15 minutes from the A30 and 20 minutes from the Cornish border
- Wildlife and stargazing haven
Come to Witherdon Wood Shepherd's Hut for a relaxing atmosphere in pretty surroundings: if you want peace and quiet but to be within easy reach of Dartmoor, north Devon and Cornwall, or to stay for a night and break up a long drive to Cornwall, this is the place for you.
The hut was constructed to a high standard and as near to its original design, but with the extra touch of an ensuite: no eco toilet or long walks across the fields to toilet blocks.
The shepherd's hut is set in the grounds of the gamekeeper's cottage for Witherdon manor house, so you'll have your own privacy with your own decking area and the woodland at your door. A barbecue is provided for sunny days and a firepit to sit around in the evenings.
This is a wildlife haven, where you'll be able to see rabbits and a variety of birds including finches, rare siskins, bullfinches, pheasants, the lesser spotted woodpecker or possibly a rare cuckoo from the steps of your hut. It's a peaceful place too, where you'll hear birds singing in the morning and the sounds of owls, foxes or deer at night (you might be lucky enough to see the deer moving through the woodland or see them in the field next to you grazing in the evenings).
On arrival you can make a hot drink of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Sugar, a fresh pint of milk, a loaf of bread, butter, jams and condiments and two free-range eggs are supplied so you can have breakfast with the woodland outlook from your breakfast bar. Witherdon is a stargazing haven too, with no light pollution: at night, watch the shooting stars going across the clear sky while you're in front of the firepit with your hot chocolate or glass of wine.
Please note that being in this peaceful rural area means that the phone signal may be weak and no internet. The hut has a radio with Bluetooth; books and games, or you could just bask in front of the log burner in the evenings or on wet days hearing the rain, in a warm hut you won't want to leave.
Out and about, bike hire is available from various suppliers nearby; canoes and kayaks can be hired at Roadford lake, and plenty of walks are in the area.
Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.
