General

  • Cosy shepherd's hut: as seen on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces 2016
  • 15 minutes from the A30 and 20 minutes from the Cornish border
  • Wildlife and stargazing haven

Come to Witherdon Wood Shepherd's Hut for a relaxing atmosphere in pretty surroundings: if you want peace and quiet but to be within easy reach of Dartmoor, north Devon and Cornwall, or to stay for a night and break up a long drive to Cornwall, this is the place for you.

The hut was constructed to a high standard and as near to its original design, but with the extra touch of an ensuite: no eco toilet or long walks across the fields to toilet blocks.

The shepherd's hut is set in the grounds of the gamekeeper's cottage for Witherdon manor house, so you'll have your own privacy with your own decking area and the woodland at your door. A barbecue is provided for sunny days and a firepit to sit around in the evenings.

This is a wildlife haven, where you'll be able to see rabbits and a variety of birds including finches, rare siskins, bullfinches, pheasants, the lesser spotted woodpecker or possibly a rare cuckoo from the steps of your hut. It's a peaceful place too, where you'll hear birds singing in the morning and the sounds of owls, foxes or deer at night (you might be lucky enough to see the deer moving through the woodland or see them in the field next to you grazing in the evenings).

Make a cup of hot chocolate, coffee or tea when you arrive (a pint of milk and sugar is supplied). If you want breakfast, order a welcome pack (no less than 48 hours before arrival please) of four sausages, four rashers of bacon, Heinz beans, two free-range eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, fresh bread, butter and condiments, fresh coffee, orange juice, apple juice and milk - all fresh local produce. Have your meals at the breakfast bar looking out onto the open woodland with no other properties in view.

Witherdon is a stargazing haven to, with no light pollution: watch the shooting stars going across the clear sky while you're in front of the firepit with your hot chocolate or glass of wine.

Please note that being in this peaceful rural area means that the phone signal may be weak and no internet. The hut has a radio with Bluetooth; books and games, or you could just bask in front of the log burner in the evenings or on wet days hearing the rain, in a warm hut you won't want to leave.

Out and about, bike hire is available from various suppliers nearby; canoes and kayaks can be hired at Roadford lake, and plenty of walks are in the area.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Beautiful setting in peace and quiet.
The owners left lovely touches for us as we spent our honeymoon there. It was spotlessly clean and cosy. The log burner warms the hut brilliantly, though they do have an electric heater so we only needed to use it once as we had lovely weather.
If you forget something, don't panic, there were toiletries, toothbrushes and flannels available.
Lots of different types of tea, instant and filter coffee and hot chocolate with sugar and milk greet you so you don't have to shop as soon as you arrive.
Option to buy a breakfast pack for two is available.
Lovely owner who introduced herself and had a chat with us.
Would definitely recommend a visit to this shepherds hut.

Sadly there's only 5 stars available....we spent our wedding anniversary at the Hut 21-24th April 2017.... where do we start? I could just say that everything was perfect but it's not enough! The place is beautiful and very relaxing, tranquility and serenity. The Hut has got everything you might need, from books, games, lots of info about what to see and do around, cleaning products, pans, tea and coffee, ketchup and mustard....we loved every minute of it. BBQ for dinner if you don't want to go out, and start the fire at night to watch millions of stars :) The bed is very comfortable - Nick did an excellent job building the Hut - yes, he build it from scratch himself! The owners Jenny and Nick are such amazing people! So lovely and helpful, so passionate about the place and they keep improving! Next time we have to try the withy willow classes! Very crafty! ...not a bad word to say about anything, we're in awe.The birds singing every morning was the cherry on the top. Close to many attractions, Tintagel Castle and beach are a must see only 1h away, Dartmoor NP, 30min to Lydford Gorge. We will be back as we think we made some good friends with Jen and Nick! We need to see Bella again :) and the chickens! Can't wait when they'll convert the Horse Lorry into accommodation! Nick and Jen are on it! Beautiful place, fantastic people, dogs, chickens, pheasants, squirrels, rabbits, deer, birds ...our heaven on earth!!! <3

Beautifully finished Shepherds Hut, hand crafted by the owner.
Lovely remote, quiet location, ideal for a quiet relaxing getaway.
Plenty of scenic walks & cycle routes - lots of local information & advice available in the hut & from the owners.
Lots of nice extra personal touches (coffees, teas, marshmallows, shower gel, toothpaste etc etc).
Really lovely, friendly owners who are clearly very passionate about life & giving people a relaxing break. Nothing was too much trouble & could have chatted to them for hours.
The breakfast package was excellent, lots of local produce (including eggs from the owner).
No TV & minimal reception, just a DAB radio. Or just listen to the many wild birds and watch out for other woodland creatures. Bliss!

What can you say but excellence is delivered here in the shape and form of Witherdon Wood Shepherds Hut. The Craftsmanship is outstanding quality and the attention to detail is impeccable! Nick and Jenny have really made a success of this down to all the last details! What a Team to come up with this, an oasis away from it all! Well done to you both for all your hard work and passion that you have put into it, it really is appreciated, and for all those little extras which really do matter and make a difference. Loved the decor, and the hut was so warm and well insulated, clean and immaculate. They thought of everything right down to those extras, toiletries, fresh coffee, butter, milk, jams, marshmallows, popcorn the list goes on. Truly 5 star Hotel quality, but for me personally better, as you are getting a different experience. Really enjoyed sitting out in an evening with the fire pit and the candles. Again all so tastefully done. I think this would be hard to beat for the price and what you are getting from this experience!!! Will be coming back again and passing details onto friends and work colleagues who we know would love this place. Thank you to Nick and Jenny for going out of their way to ensure we had enough diesel by filling up a petrol can for us, as we left ourselves on short. A lovely couple who are ideal for this venture. Wishing you both every success for the future. You have something special there!

Turn left, continue on this road until you reach Boldventure cross and turn left to Ashwater. Go down the lane and continue a short way. You will find us on the right with It will have a finger board pointing towards the shepherd's huts.

If you are coming from the Bude direction, follow signs for Holsworthy, then follow signs for Okehampton, go through Halwill junction. As you leave the village there is a sale agreed derelict house on the left near a left hand bend sign posted germansweek, turn right on the bend. go straight over at the staggered junction (Upcott cross).
