Witherdon Wood Shepherd's Hut: The hut at night

General

  • Adults-only shepherd's hut 25 mins' drive from Dartmoor National Park
  • Supplies for welcome breakfast and hot drinks provided
  • Ensuite shower room; outside deck with hot tub, barbecue and firepit

If you go down to the woods today… make it Witherdon Wood Shepherd's Hut, in Beaworthy, Devon, for a peaceful grownups-only stay in impressive surroundings (the grounds of the gamekeeper's cottage for Witherdon manor house, to be precise).

The owners have pulled out all the stops to make your stay a comfortable one – you’ll arrive to a collection of fresh local ingredients (all the bits for a full English breakfast are provided, with fresh local produce, fresh coffee, fresh juice and cereal) so you can whip up a cuppa in no time, and brekkie the next morning too. Perch at the breakfast bar while you tuck in for a fine way to appreciate your peaceful surroundings… while you do, keep an eye out for deer moving through the woodland or grazing in the field next to you.

Days are easily spent pottering around the site – the well-equipped hut has a Bluetooth radio, books and games to pass the hours, and the log burner will keep you toasty when the weather isn’t up to much. Outside, there's a covered decking area with seating, a barbecue, a firepit and a hot tub for alfresco evenings (this area is a stargazing hotspot, so be on the lookout for shooting stars).

The hut comes with the luxury of an ensuite shower room too, with handmade eco-friendly toiletries (in keeping with the site's general eco-conscious vibe that favours things like solar power and plastic-free tea bags).

If you can tear yourself away, spend your days covering the local walking and cycling paths, or rent canoes and kayaks for adventures on Roadford Lake (10 minutes away), which is also a fine choice for fishing.

A wonderful break for my daughter and her wife as a wedding anniversary gift. They loved the area, the birds and of course the hot tub!!!!

    Disliked:

If the bed had been a fold up variety they would have had little more room

From the manager...

Im pleased they enjoyed their stay.
Sorry it wasn't big enough for them but no one else has commented on this, infact impressed how it has everything and more in it.
It is a traditional shepherds hut, we did look into it but decided not to and wanted traditional not modern. Also the problem with a fold up and down bed is that you have to keep making and unmaking your bed which is not practical and also more of a pain than a benefit.
The size bed is a small double to try and space save without losing its character and in my advertising details.
I do say in my advertising details we have poor, if any phone signal, so 4g is also effected and I do not have WiFi, I can't get great WiFi or phone signal in my own house!
Unfortunetly we live in the countryside, so this becomes part of you stay experience, making this is a good break if you want to leave technology and your demanding life behind you and relax to enjoy the surroundings and wildlife.

Everything! Exactly as advertised. Peaceful surroundings, beautiful outdoors area looking out to the trees, excellent and very large hot tub, fire pit, a sheltered seating area and inside was very cosy. Lovely bed, cute little fridge, hobs, a sink and a bathroom with a nice shower. Also the hosts have a gorgeous cat and she spent most of the time with us when we were outside which was a wonderful extra bonus to our trip. She was more than happy to do her own thing as well though, if cats aren't for you. We spent most of our time in the hot tub watching pheasants, squirrels and lots of other little birds feeding from the trees and strolling about the garden. It was perfect.

Location was half an hour drive from Bude which has a beautiful beach and some nice shops including some good vegan things which was great for us.

The hosts met us (distanced of course) at the gate and were very friendly and that was the last we saw or heard of them. It was very peaceful and romantic.

    Disliked:

Phone had barely any signal but I was expecting that. No WiFi either but it was nice to be off our phones. Also because you're in the trees and the countryside there are a lot of bugs at night but it wasn't a nuisance and there was bug spray and insect repellant in the cabin as well as wood for the fire which kept them away as well.

This is a true shepherds hut experience. The owners have made every effort to recreate the traditional hut yet with many extra little luxuries. It is in a peaceful location with its own outside area which is ideal for al fresco dinning. The attention to detail pre and during our stay was second to none, they have really thought of everything!

Everything. The hut is built to a high standard and you can tell a lot of love and effort when into it. I was surprised at how big it actually was inside.

Jen was so welcoming and lovely , even making sure I was ok before she had to pop off for a few days. Plus there's tea, coffee, milk, bread, butter, eggs all ready when I got there.

It's so peaceful and quiet. The grounds are lovely. If you want a get away from it all this is the place to go. Limited phone signal and no internet but that was a bonus for me.

    Definitely going back.

A beautiful place to stay, with so many little details thought of to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The local walks are beautiful and we ended both evenings with a BBQ by the hut, and then sitting by the fire pit watching the stars. It's a very quiet area, the hosts are very welcoming but also considerate about giving you the space you want, and we got some visits from their animals friends, which was added treat.
There is no wifi or internet coverage, but we found this to be a bonus as we got to relax entirely undisturbed.
I'd heartily recommend this as a place to stay if only I didn't want to keep it for myself...
