The woodland on your doorstep and walks beyond

General

  • Adults-only shepherd's hut 25 mins' drive from Dartmoor National Park
  • Supplies for welcome breakfast and hot drinks provided
  • Ensuite bathroom; outside decking with seating, barbecue and firepit

If you go down to the woods today… make it Witherdon Wood Shepherd's Hut, in Beaworthy, Devon, for a peaceful grownups-only stay in impressive surroundings (the grounds of the gamekeeper's cottage for Witherdon manor house, to be precise).

The owners have pulled out all the stops to make your stay a comfortable one – you’ll arrive to a collection of fresh local ingredients (all the bits for a full English breakfast are provided, with fresh local produce, fresh coffee, fresh juice and cereal) so you can whip up a cuppa in no time, and brekkie the next morning too. Perch at the breakfast bar while you tuck in for a fine way to appreciate your peaceful surroundings… while you do, keep an eye out for deer moving through the woodland or grazing in the field next to you.

Days are easily spent pottering around the site – the well-equipped hut has a Bluetooth radio, books and games to pass the hours, and the log burner will keep you toasty when the weather isn’t up to much. Outside, there's a decking area with seating, a barbecue and a firepit for alfresco evenings (this area is a stargazing hotspot, so be on the lookout for shooting stars). The hut comes with the luxury of an ensuite bathroom too – no eco toilet or long walks across muddy fields to toilet blocks here.

If you can tear yourself away, spend your days covering the local walking and cycling paths, or rent canoes and kayaks for adventures on Roadford Lake (10 minutes away), which is also a fine choice for fishing.

Everything. The hut is built to a high standard and you can tell a lot of love and effort when into it. I was surprised at how big it actually was inside.

Jen was so welcoming and lovely , even making sure I was ok before she had to pop off for a few days. Plus there's tea, coffee, milk, bread, butter, eggs all ready when I got there.

It's so peaceful and quiet. The grounds are lovely. If you want a get away from it all this is the place to go. Limited phone signal and no internet but that was a bonus for me.

    Definitely going back.

A beautiful place to stay, with so many little details thought of to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The local walks are beautiful and we ended both evenings with a BBQ by the hut, and then sitting by the fire pit watching the stars. It's a very quiet area, the hosts are very welcoming but also considerate about giving you the space you want, and we got some visits from their animals friends, which was added treat.
There is no wifi or internet coverage, but we found this to be a bonus as we got to relax entirely undisturbed.
I'd heartily recommend this as a place to stay if only I didn't want to keep it for myself...

    EVERYTHING!!!
What wasn’t there to love? From the moment we arrived to the moment we left it felt like a little place of paradise.
The hut itself is beautiful and cosy, everything you need is supplied for you and nothing is too much hassle. When we arrived on the very wet Friday, the fire had already been lit which straight away made you feel comfortable. Jen explained everything to us so it became home from home.
On arrival there are fresh eggs, bread, butter and milk. As well as everything you don’t think of... tea bags, fresh coffee, all the condiments and even bathroom toiletries!
There was no phone signal for us at the hut but that was perfect, we completely switched off from the world, work and social media. It is so quiet that you can hear all the birds, the deer and the rain so clearly. There is a little dab radio which we had on for most of the weekend in the background. The fire was going all weekend and just made the experience even better.
The outside area is very cosy, at night there are lights and candles with a fire pit and bbq. It’s crystal clear if the weather permits, you can see thousands of stars.

I would highly recommend this if you need to switch off from the world and want somewhere that is a home from home.

We have already booked again for this year and hope to keep coming back to this perfect little destination.

Liked everything! The shepherds hut was very well equipped and you could tell how much love and care went into every single bit of attention to detail. It was really comfortable in the hut and the shower had a good water pressure too! Host Jenny was so friendly and helpful which made all the difference. It is also a lovely location, not just the setting itself, but it is quietly tucked away, yet not too far off from the many things to do in the surrounding areas. The eggs from the roaming chickens on the site were also a nice touch.

We will be back again for sure!

As this is an adults-only place, why not indulge in some over-18s days out? There are a few vineyards dotted around nearby for tours and tastings – Carey Valley Wines (10 minutes' drive), Alder Vineyard (20 minutes) and Torview Winery & Vineyard (25 minutes) are all worth a look. There are also cider producers to visit if you’re more apples than grapes – try Countryman Cider (half an hour), The Cider Vat (35 minutes) and Sam’s Cider (40 minutes).

For scenic trails and wildlife spotting, Dartmoor National Park (25 minutes) can be explored in a number of ways – how about horse riding on the open moor or climbing the granite tors? Or visit the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (35 minutes), where you can take the Tamar Valley Line train or Tamar Passenger Ferry to see the sights.

Fancy a bit of sand under your feet instead (and maybe a paddle in the sea)? Take advantage of your proximity to Cornwall and cross the border for some of the county’s famous beaches. Bude (40 minutes) is a good choice, for its sandy beaches and surfing spots.
