General
- Dog-friendly geodesic domes in rural Devon
- A 20-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park; half an hour to the coast
- Private outside area with a firepit and barbecue; pub very close by
Weighing up beaches versus bike rides through forest landscapes? Quiet market towns versus livelier seaside towns? You won’t have to pass over any of the above when you set down at Walnut Farm in rural Devon. A 20-minute drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park and half an hour’s drive from the southwest coast, outdoor activities are always easy to track down, whether that’s hiking, cycling, horse riding, surfing or sea kayaking.
To get to this place, you’ll travel down a very quiet country lane after around eight miles of Devon countryside and forests. So, with rural Devon as your base, it’s bound to be quite peaceful. There’s a country pub just over five minutes’ walk from the site too, just the place to try out local ciders, real ales and dine on pub grub.
There’s good enough access to main roads too. Fishing lakes are five minutes’ drive from the site and there’s an archery centre 10 minutes’ drive away too. Further out, the main roads make it simple to get to other locations such as Tavistock (35 minutes), an ancient market town, or Okehampton (15 minutes), where there’s a castle and the start of the Granite Way (20 minutes) trail around Dartmoor.
With geodesic domes to choose from at Walnut Farm, each under Devon’s dark skies (depending upon cloud cover) and with views over green fields towards Exmoor and Dartmoor, there’s lots to like about this unique glamping experience. Each dome has its own flushing toilet, hot shower, washing-up area and a large, well-cut grass area containing a firepit and barbecue.

Local attractions
If you fancy a cycle or a stroll, but you don’t want to travel too far, that’s no problem. Cookworthy Forest (five minutes’ drive) or the Pegasus Trail (five minutes) are close by. For those longer jaunts on bicycle, the 180-mile Tarka Trail (10 minutes’ drive) is another option, but don’t feel pressured to tackle it all at once.
Days at the seaside can be spent in several locations. Bude (half an hour) and its beaches are a surfing hotspot, especially Widemouth beach (35 minutes), which has its own surfing school. Westward Ho! (45 minutes), Appledore (50 minutes) and Clovelly (45 minutes) are other fine examples of seaside towns and villages in Devon.
Perhaps some history first? Options include the Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre (20 minutes), The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic (45 minutes) or Tintagel Castle (55 minutes).
You may want to stop by Holsworthy (15 minutes) or Hatherleigh (15 minutes) for a snack on your way to Roadford Lake (15 minutes) too. The energy will come in handy for kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing and other watersports.
