  • Handcrafted treehouse in a two-acre ancient Devon woodland
  • Dartmoor National Park and north Devon coast within a half-hour drive
  • Fully equipped lodge with gorgeous views from the wraparound balcony
Ready for some real rural luxury? Take yourselves off to this gorgeous spot on the edge of the village of Black Torrington, where you can settle into a smart and comfortable treehouse surrounded by two acres of ancient woodland. Treehouse in Devon is a real homage to its surroundings, as it’s been handcrafted from local timber (some of which came from these very woods) – everything from the wooden floorboards to the handmade bed (designed to showcase the site’s own copper beech tree) sings of rural Devon. It’s a supremely comfortable space too, with two bedrooms (with a super-kingsize bed in the main room and either another super-kingsize or two singles in the other), a fully equipped kitchen and a cosy lounge area with sofas, TV and a woodburning stove. There’s no wifi in this secluded spot, but there’s a stash of board games and books for both kids and grownups to provide a bit of low-fi entertainment. Of course, as you’re surrounded by woodland there’s plenty of other low-fi entertainment around as well. Perhaps you’ll spot a badger, deer or otter as you take a walk around the property, or find some sort of amphibian or reptile scuttling around one of the hibernacula that have been installed. Being on the banks of the River Torridge means you may also be lucky enough to catch sight of a kingfisher darting into the water. There are lots of lovely spots around the site to chill out for a bit and read a book or try out some forest bathing – and one of those spots is the wraparound balcony, which gives 360-degree views from the treehouse and makes a fabulous place to sit with a drink and soak up your surroundings.

Route directions

What 3 words: relishing.visitors.became To avoid a nearby very narrow country lane, check your route before setting off. You'll probably find you'll be going through Hatherleigh (about six miles away) on the way to the site. It's a good idea to add a stop at The Black River Inn, Black Torrington on Google Maps. When you reach the Black River Inn, just carry on driving and you'll be on site in a couple of minutes, having avoided the country lane in question.

Local attractions

Once you’ve taken a stroll around the site, you may well be up for a longer walk – if that’s the case, you may like to head out into Dartmoor National Park (25 minutes’ drive) or set off to the north Devon coast (roughly half an hour) for a hike on the South West Coast Path. If lengthy hikes aren’t part of the plan, you could instead try a stroll around the ruins of Okehampton Castle (25 minutes) or a tour of the vines at Alder Vineyard (half an hour). Horse riding, canoeing and golf are all options nearby too if you fancy some different outdoor activity. Other days out nearby might take you to learn about local heritage at the Museum of Dartmoor Life (25 minutes), try out vintage rides and games at Dingles Fairground Museum (half an hour) or coo over the shiny vehicles at Moretonhampstead Motor Museum (45 minutes).
