  • Peaceful, adults-only site with spacious woodland pitches in Devon
  • A 45-minute drive from the coast; Tintagel Castle one hour
  • Firepits and barbecue grills, plus a café; showers and a launderette
As the owners of Hole Station Campsite are fond of saying: ‘You wanted privacy? Here it is.’ Their catchphrase is no gimmick, either, for this is a supremely secluded adults-only spot in rural Devon, halfway between Dartmoor (40 minutes’ drive) and the beaches of the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast (45 minutes). The site is set in 23 acres of woodland, with each pitch getting just shy of an acre. Vehicles have no access to the woods, so you won’t hear car doors slamming at ungodly o’ clock. Instead, you can park next to the reception and use a wheelbarrow for loading and unloading. What’s more, there is a monitored 11pm quiet time. And there’ll be no inopportune barking, either, since dogs are not allowed. Can’t you just feel your shoulders unclenching at the thought of all that peace and quiet? Staying in the woods, listening to the birds warbling away, is a tempting proposition, but there is also plenty you could do in the area, from fishing at Anglers Paradise (10 minutes) to surfing at Westward Ho! (45 minutes). Each pitch has its own firepit and barbecue grill, and campfire kits (with firelighters, kindling and logs) are for sale at reception. When it comes to provisions, there is a farm shop a 10-minute drive away, plus several weekly markets in the vicinity. A café on site serves full English breakfasts and snacks, and the local pub is in the village of Highampton (25 minutes’ walk). In terms of amenities, the site has a toilet block and showers, plus a washing-up area and a launderette.

Local attractions

Wading birds and butterflies (plus roaming Exmoor ponies) inhabit the watery landscape at Meeth Quarry Nature Reserve (20 minutes). Take a leisurely stroll along the trails, or turn your walk into a hike by joining the long-distance Tarka Trail from here. Speaking of tarka and other otters, you might be able to spot these critters in Halsdon Nature Reserve (half an hour). For a walk among fragrant blooms, head to RHS Garden Rosemoor (half an hour), where the so-called Hot Garden comes into a fiery riot of reds, yellows and oranges in the summer. There is also a collection of exotic plants, a cherry garden and orchards. Pop into neighbouring Cornwall to visit Tintagel Castle (one hour), on a rugged island accessed via a hanging bridge. The atmospheric medieval ruins and spectacular surrounds are inextricably linked with the legend of King Arthur. Check out his life-size bronze statue, then wait for low tide to explore Merlin’s Cave.

Liked: An amazing getaway from the noise of life!
We have just returned from a beautiful weekend away at Hole Station Campsite.

Upon arrival, we tooted our horn twice (as the sign requests!) and we were greeted by Greg, the owner. He gave us a tour of the site and then let us loose to go explore and choose our own pitch. We loved this bit! We chose #10, right in the back corner and backs onto the field of sheep.

Once back, we unpacked our belongings into two wheelbarrows and took our things to our pitch. Wheelbarrow races were a huge temptation!! The tent was soon up and we settled into a good book and a cold beverage as a reward!

At dinner time rolled around, we lit our campfire using the kindling and wood we purchased from Greg upon arrival. We love a BBQ so cooking on the wood fire grill was right up our street. The fire kept us nice and warm throughout the evening and it was lovely to sit under the tarpaulin shelter on the pitch.

Each pitch also has its own loo - a great luxury! Never far to walk after a few beers! It’s also very easy to clean these - Greg shows you the cleaning area when you arrive and even a novice can figure it out!

The site is so quiet, we managed to sleep in until gone 9am - a rarity when camping! The adults only policy probably helps this.

We cooked all our own meals so didn’t use the cafe on site for breakfast but the menu looked great and the cafe area was beautiful! You can also order dinner from the cafe and it’s packaged up for you in tin containers which you can heat up yourself on the fire. Awesome idea!

A few other things we loved about this site:
- charging facilities: there are two lockable cabinets and each have a USB plug already in so it’s able to charge 3-4 devices at once. You take the giant key(!) back with you for an hour or two and then return it once your device is charged.
- shower block- two lovely showers which were hot, clean, good pressure, available and spacious. You can easily get changed in there and there’s a chair to put your belongings on. The sign up sheet for shower slots was a pandemic implementation but is still in use as it works very well - no queues!!
- recycling point is fab and everything is thought of. Plastic waste is strongly discouraged. Try to not buy anything plastic where possible - great ethos !
- washing up area is great with two roomy sink areas and an urn for hot water.
- freezer is in the same area as washing up so is available 24/7 basically. You can take a couple of bottles of frozen water to replace your freezer packs as they refreeze. Genius.

Overall, we had a fabulous weekend and we will be back as soon as you open next season!

Liked: Great place to stay, we loved how environmentally friendly it was and how private the pitches are. Very quiet and peaceful. Greg and Liz were very friendly and helpful and Greg's signs were not only informative but made me chuckle every time I read one.
