South Town Farm: Setting up camp

General

  • Peaceful site on a working farm 15 minutes' drive from Barnstaple
  • Part of the 2,700-acre National Trust Arlington estate
  • Exmoor National Park and Devon beaches within half an hour's drive

South Town Farm is a small and friendly north Devon site is on a 200-acre working farm, part of the spectacular 2,700-acre National Trust Arlington estate and its miles of footpaths through woods and farmland.

Pitches are spread across two roomy fields, with plenty of space for relaxation or running about. This is a site for families who want to play games, roam around nature spotting, build campfires and stargaze; it's all safe and secure too, as the pitches are kept car free; the only wheels allowed on this patch are attached to the wheelbarrows used for transporting your kit.

It’s highly likely that you’ll want to utilise some of this space for a cookout, and you’re most welcome to do so if you bring your own barbecue or firepit. The site also has a limited number of complimentary firepits you can borrow and logs can be purchased on site. As it's an off-grid site, you’ll want to bring a torch along too, to avoid late-night stumbles as you make your way to the compost toilets and warm showers.

As well as being a good spot for local wanders, South Town Farm’s handily placed for roaming the Exmoor National Park and the beaches of the Devon coast. Barnstaple, 15 minutes away, is the place for your town amenities, including supermarkets, restaurants and pubs serving food; even closer to home, a farm shop is within five minutes' drive.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Had a lovely stay, the host was lovely and welcoming as well as informative. Pitches were well spaced out and facilities were well kept. Wheelbarrows and fire pits onsite worked perfectly. Wealth of information provided on local walks, tide times etc. Particularly enjoyed the onsite farm walk through the fields and woodlands, very enjoyable.

The toilets and shower were spotless.
The owners were kind, helpful and friendly.
The pitches were set out with good distance so you didn’t have someone over looking you.
The washing up facilities were spotless and the information board was fun to read.
The views were incredible and the whole site was so peaceful. We enjoyed plenty of nights star gazing with the children and saw lots of shooting stars.
The site was child friendly and fenced in but with plenty of areas to roam. The children particularly enjoyed watching the farm animals and blackberry picking.
Parking area was a short walk from the tent and it was nice not to see cars about in the field. The wheelbarrows were fun for the children to help with too.
Fire pit provided free of charge and logs for a small price.
Campsite was well placed for visiting the local beaches and towns. Plenty to do in the area! But just far enough out to feel like you’re escaping.
Unsure about Wi-Fi but the signal on the campsite was great.
Overall this was the best campsite we have stayed on and we would love to return again one day! I would highly recommend this site for people and families of all ages and sizes.

Such a beautiful site and surrounding area close by. Dani and Murray are perfectly helpful and contactable when needed but also leave you to manage yourself in a very trusting manner. The composite toilets are impeccable and much cleaner and fresher than some pop up camp loos.

The size of the field was great and the wheelbarrows for moving things was a good idea with no cars at the tents. Toilets and shower room worked well. Owners very helpful and when we had trouble starting a fire on a windy night Dani came to help us and bring us some useful supplies.Would happily return again.

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike but there were only 2 toilets but not many of us on site, not sure if more would be needed if campsite was full.

Thank you for the lovely review, I'm glad the fire went well!

Lovely, quiet wild site. 2 fields with large, well spaced out pitches. Short walk available around the farm and through the woods. No light pollution so great for star gazing at night along with the free use of fire pits (£5 for a bag of wood that will last you 2 nights). Just 2 long drop loos and 1 shower but this is fine as the site is not overcrowded. Everything kept very clean. Small hut for filling up water and washing up. Info on the walls about nature on the site, local places to visit, tide times and 2 large OS maps of North Devon. From the site you can walk a 9km circular of the Arlington Estate (National Trust property midway round). Not far from most places in North Devon. Short drive to the local small farm shop for local ciders, beers and cheeses. Just 15 mins drive to Barnstaple for your major supermarkets. Very handy having flexible check in (anytime between 9am-8pm) with later check out than most campsites we've stayed at, at 12:30pm. We were even told we could leave later in the day as they weren't busy. Loved our stay and highly recommend to anyone visiting North Devon!

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to post a review and for the lovely comments about our site, we're glad that you liked your stay at South Town. Murray and I have a bit of a passion for compost toilets and are always striving to prove that, looked after properly, they are the best - but we completely understand that not everyone agrees with us! I hope the rest of your trip went well.

Local attractions

As you’re settled on the Arlington estate, you’ll want to explore your domain a little – as well as a lengthy network of footpaths and adventure play trails, there’s also a splendid stately home that houses the National Trust Carriage Museum. If that’s fired you up for more walks, Heddon Valley (20 minutes’ drive) is popular for its sea views, and there are routes galore around the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). Horse riding, kayaking, coasteering and heaps more antics can be had around the park too.

Away from Exmoor, the traffic-free Tarka Trail, running from Barnstaple, is a good bet for a bike ride, or you could take your rods for a day of fishing at Wistland Pound Reservoir or Bratton Water (both about five minutes away by car). Surfers or surf wannabes can hit the beaches and surf schools of Saunton Sands and Woolacombe with a drive of half an hour or so.

After watching animal antics on the farm, take a look at the more exotic creatures over at Exmoor Zoo, 10 minutes away and home to all sorts of beasties from around the globe.
