South Dean Camping: What a view!

General

  • Dog-friendly rural Devon site near several sandy beaches
  • A half-hour drive to Barnstaple and 25 minutes to Woolacombe
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; footpaths and pubs nearby

Grab your walking boots… within 30 minutes’ drive of Barnstaple and 25 minutes of Woolacombe, South Dean Camping is well placed for anyone who wants to tackle the local terrain on foot or simply sit back and nurse a drink while gazing out to sea… or both.

This is a working farm, so you’ll share views of North Devon’s cliff-carved coastline with a host of farm animals, as well as the occasional wild pony, red deer or bird of prey. Near to sandy coves, woodlands and open moorlands, you'll quite possibly be ooh-ing and ahh-ing all day long. Plus, your dog won’t need to miss out on the countryside sensations either, as they’re welcome on a lead.

Pick a plot among the unmarked pitches stretching over 10 acres of land, and come prepped with grill recipes as barbecues are allowed on site. There are firepits provided to keep blazes safe, and bins to keep the countryside litter-free; toilets and showers are on site, too.

Keep an eye out for cheeky peacocks and other wandering wildlife as you follow several trails direct from the site – perhaps take a bicycle or simply walk the woodlands and open moorlands. There's a circular route past beaches, or if sand’s on your mind and you want it fast, it’s a 15-minute drive to the nearest sandy coves and surfing schools.

After all that walking, you won’t want to go hungry… so order a takeaway or fill up at several pubs and restaurants and shops in the neighbouring towns, including a Victorian inn within a five-minute drive.

Stunning location. Very quiet and direct access on to the South West Coastal path.

Friendly welcome and I was able to park where I wanted and how I wanted so that I got the best of the views.

Only two vans the night I stayed.

I didn't use the facilities so can't comment

    Incredible views
Nice to be able to choose a spot on the field
Surprisingly nice and well stocked toilet/shower facilities
    Owners are friendly
    Fire pit hire is straightforward
Obviously being on a cliff is a little windy, but it keeps all the bugs/flies away!
    Really quiet

    Disliked:

Approaching from the east of the site in a van is terrifying - exceptionally narrow, heavily wooded road, very steep, not many passing points. Not a fault of the owners, but not enough space to put this in the summary. Approaching from the west is so much easier (and has great views!)

Wow, what an amazing place to stay! The views are absolutely stunning! I originally booked for a 2 night stay, but as soon as I arrived I extended to a 4 night stay. The campsite was friendly, quiet, and the facilities were really clean. Free bottles of water were an added bonus. Thanks for a great stay… I will definitely be back!

It is a very quiet, spacious and comfortable place to camp. The sanitary cabins are basic, but new and clean. We spent 3 nights and enjoyed the beautiful views straight from the tent, the sunset and the starry sky. A great base for excursions along the coast. The hosts are very lovely and helpful. We recommend this place to everyone. sylwia & artur
