  • Off-grid adults-only site 25 minutes’ drive from Woolacombe beach
  • A 15-minute drive to Exmoor National Park; Saunton Sands half an hour
  • Easy access to footpaths and half an hour’s walk from the local pub
Tracking down the lively Devon surf or Exmoor National Park’s ponies? If your break is strictly grown-ups only, you’ll be set at Plaistow Barton. With simple facilities including solar lighting, cold running water and a toilet, this off-grid site is popular with foodies, surfers, beachgoers, hikers, cyclists and those with a well-behaved furry companion. Active breaks are catered to very nicely here – just take a look at the location. It’s a 25-minute drive to get to Woolacombe beach, which has three miles of sand and some fab surf. For more of the same, head to Saunton Sands or Croyde, about 10 minutes further along the coast. Since you’ll be in holiday mode, it’s only right that you track down local restaurants within driving distance that dish out some very attractive tapas, fish and vegan food. Pressed for time or craving a meal and a beer as a pair? There’s a family-run pub with ales, local beers and food half an hour’s walk away from the site. If you’d rather take control of your own dinner plate, barbecues are allowed with permission from Plaistow Barton (no disposable ones though, thanks). All of that tasty fodder should set you up well if you’ve got hiking on the brain. To start with, it’s only a two-minute walk from the site to a spot that's got views over three counties, out to the coast and Lundy island. Footpaths are easily accessible too, and there are countless options in Exmoor National Park, the boundaries of which are 15 minutes’ drive of the site. The site has free-range chickens, geese and young lambs, so although dogs are allowed they must be well-behaved.

Local attractions

Make a break for Barnstaple (15 minutes’ drive) to get stuck into local brewery tours and tastings or to escape over the 180-mile Tarka Trail cycling trail. The town has good train and bus links for any explorations further afield. That’s if you’re not already preoccupied catching a few swells on one of the local surfing beaches. Saunton Sands (half an hour) has a surf school for complete newbies, while Croyde (35 minutes) draws in the more seasoned wave-catchers (and all those wanting to hike up to Baggy Point). Had your fill of the sand and sea for now? Exmoor National Park (from 15 minutes’ drive) has everything from hikes past wild ponies and deer to lakes, castles and a distillery. On the way, plan a little pitstop at Arlington Court (15 minutes), where there’s a huge horse-drawn carriage collection and stunning Regency grounds. More National Trust properties can be tracked down nearby.
