  • Quiet rural Devon site close to the A358 and well placed for walks
  • A 10-minute drive from Axminster; 20 minutes from Jurassic Coast
  • Simple pitches on the banks of the River Axe, with farmland views
If you’re in the market for scenic walks, this could well be the place for you. Wadbrook Farm is in rural Devon, in a splendid spot on the banks of the River Axe and tucked between the East Devon, Blackdown Hills and Dorset Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. That, of course, means all sorts of choices for walks and other outdoor activities – and that's before you’ve added in the options presented by the Jurassic Coast and South West Coast Path, which are both about 20 minutes’ drive away. Handily, although this is a quiet rural site it's also just five minutes’ drive from the A358 main Axminster-Chard road, so getting out and about to all these locations should be fairly straightforward. Access to site is easy too, through large wooden gates with plenty of room for motorhomes. There are only a handful of pitches here, so you’ll never feel hemmed in and have plenty of space to relax and enjoy the views over the river and fields full of farm animals (this is a working farm so you’ll often spot sheep or cattle grazing nearby). Simple facilities include wifi and a chemical disposal point, but please note there are no toilets or showers on site so you’ll need to be self contained on that front. Barbecues are welcome on the pitches here, but there are plenty of places to eat nearby if you’d prefer to head out – several pubs are within walking distance or a short drive, or you could take the 10-minute drive to Axminster.

Local attractions

You can certainly give your walking boots a good workout around here… there are plenty of footpaths around the farm for strolls or dog walks, and many more routes to choose from in the surrounding Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you’d like to include seaside views on your outings, take a 20-minute drive to the coast to pick up the South West Coast Path from Lyme Regis or Seaton. There are lots of historic attractions around this area too if you’d like to include a bit of heritage on your hikes. Forde Abbey House and Gardens (15 minutes’ drive) is one of the best known, but the National Trust’s Lambert’s Castle (10 minutes) is also worth a look. If you’ve got kids to entertain, Axe Valley Wildlife Park (10 minutes) is a good place to start – although if you don’t mind a longer drive, it’ll only take an hour or so to get to the spectacular subterranean landscapes of Wookey Hole. Meanwhile, if you’re more in the market for a grownup outing see if you can book in for a meal or event at River Cottage (15 minutes).
