• Dog-friendly wild camping in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Leave the car behind and walk to Portmellon and Mevagissey beaches
  • Sea views and a solar shower; walk to the pub, café or farm shop
Leave the car at home: at Pemberton Farm in Cornwall, there’s no need for frills or engines. This is the sort of place where you’ll likely get to watch barn owls fly at dusk, listen to skylarks and try to spot voles and butterflies. Wild camping is what this site does well – and the pitches (in an Area of Outstanding Beauty) have sea views and access to eco-conscious facilities including a basic solar shower and canisters of mains water. A stroll will take you far, that’s for certain. You’ll pass through the West Bodrugan Wood Nature Reserve on your way to Portmellon beach (the walk should take around 35 minutes in all). Once there, grab your daily caffeine dose from the beach café, pick up some local produce for later from the farm shop and then nab yourself a kayak from the beachside hire for paddles out around the bay. Down those country lanes, there’s also a pub on the beachside – but if you’re keen to call by a few country and coastal venues, there are more pubs in St Ewe (10 minutes’ drive) and Mevagissey (45 minutes’ walk). And for essential shops and bakeries, just look to villages like Pentewan, Mevagissey and Gorran. Mevagissey, by the way, is another properly nice place within walking distance of the site – a 45-minute walk will get you to the historic Cornish fishing village where there’s a working harbour that runs fishing charters. Good news for those of you who are taking advantage of Pemberton Farm’s dog-friendly status too – as well as all those country and coastal walks, there are also local woodlands for their all-important walkies. Back at the farm, other facilities include a compost loo and mains water.

Local attractions

Those of you who are wildlife fans will be pleased to find that there are splendid gardens within driving distance of the site. The Lost Gardens Heligan (10 minutes' drive) has features from the 19th century and 200 acres of plant life, as well as a farm shop. Underline the Eden Project (half an hour) on your Cornwall map too. Rainforest and Mediterranean biomes in a china clay pit is the summary but when you look at the fine print, there are also zipwires and giant swings for adventurous folk. As for more very pretty coastal scenes, The Roseland Heritage Coast (25 minutes) is sprinkled with settings like waterfalls, creeks and cliffs. If you’re looking for additional places to set yourself down on the sand, Hemmick Beach (10 minutes) and Porthpean (20 minutes) are some other splendid spots – the latter is especially nifty for watersports like windsurfing or paddleboarding.
