Colliford Tavern: Beer garden and play area

General

  • Woodland site in spacious Bodmin Moor tavern grounds
  • A 15-minute drive from Bodmin and 25 minutes from the Eden Project
  • Restaurant, bars, games room and fishing on site

If peaceful stays within a few minutes’ stroll of bars, restaurants, evening entertainment and trout fishing appeal, then making your getaway for Colliford Tavern is a must. The family-friendly site is a quarter mile from the shores of Colliford Lake, and 15 minutes’ drive from Bodmin, Cornwall.

In the grounds of a family-run tavern and hotel, the site is well placed for outdoorsy forays. On the famed Bodmin Moor, and within easy reach of lakeside walks, getting out and about is a must. Those comfortable with lengthy wanders should make tracks for Dozmary Pool, the rumoured resting place of King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur. More of a ‘sitting still in quiet contemplation’ type? Colliford Lake is a top spot for rainbow and brown trout fishing, and a licence can be secured at reception.

For taking explores a bit further afield, car hire and bike hire are available through the hotel, putting hikes and Cornish beaches within handier reach, even for those who are travelling without a vehicle. Why not hire both? Throw the bikes in the car and head as far as Wenford Bridge to start the 18-mile cycle (or stroll) along the Camel Trail to Padstow.

On days where straying far doesn’t appeal, simply stick around site: the hotel is open daily for all meals, and the bars are too. An indoor games room and outdoor playground should keep kids busy, and the occasional live music and entertainment should liven up evenings. A kitchen unit for guests makes cutting down on spending a cinch too, and peaceful nights away from the bar can be spent stargazing, as Bodmin Moor is a Dark Sky Reserve.

Please note

The restaurant is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Cleanliness of the facilities , I'm no snob at all BUT when there's faeces smeared on the wall and on the toilet seat , mould & hair in the showers , Shower controls didnt work which gave you water hot enough to melt your face , Won't be rushing back which is such a shame as the location is stunning .

Couldn’t find bin point. Staff are not particularly friendly or welcoming.

From the manager...

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for the valuable review. We will ensure that our guest has been informed about the bin, including recycling. It is just opposite the main building, covered by a wooden fence. We have also raised the staff welcoming matter to the team seriously to overcome too.
Best regards.

Not too bad if camping but rather unloved and unclean16/08/2022

The views were lovely and the staff were friendly and helpful. It felt like camping in an actual moors but with the luxury of electric!

    Disliked:

We can not comment on the hotel itself, the pods or the restaurant facilities as we did not use these. We saw the reviews and thought we would give the place the benefit of the doubt, however the site was run down as said in previous reviews, there is some lovely potential like a little garden area that is just overgrown. The views and the whole forest like feel was lovely! The toilets were very unclean and covered in bugs and spider webs which I fully understand you’re going to get bugs but not to this extent if kept clean daily. The showers were cracked and dirty too. I kind of liked seeing sheep but at the same time they were noisy and woke us up early hours of the morning and the sheep poo was just insane! I’ve read somewhere that new owners may of taken over the site, I just fully believe with a bit of time and a-lot of money spent on the place and cleaners either trained or replaced or maybe given more hours this place would be such a lovely place to stay! It definitely wasn’t the worst place to stay but unless a lot of the comments made about the state of the place is addressed we won’t be staying again.l which is a shame.

From the manager...

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your valuable comments. We take every word seriously and take necessary action to improve our guest experience. This has been communicated to the team, and they believe they will take necessary action. Thank you very much and best regards.

The immense potential of this location and thoughts of what this facility could be! Camping amongst the trees with a spectacular view over the lake, and quick access to the A30 to explore mid Cornwall.

    Disliked:

The fact that it has been allowed to fall into disrepair and is in desperate need of some small scale investment, sound management and a bit of TLC. The sheep are a bonus not an annoyance, but there is no excuse for litter around the site, shabby washrooms, almost non-existent bar and restaurant when with some time, energy, commitment and determination the camp site, tavern, hotel (?) could actually be a really impressive set up.

Local attractions

History buffs will find lots round here to entertain, starting with some literary history. Five minutes’ drive from base is the Jamaica Inn (yes, the Daphne du Maurier one), and its Smugglers Museum is well worth a visit. Poldark fans will know Cornwall as mining country, and that’s well catered for hereabouts too: it’s 15 minutes from the site to Carnglaze Caverns for underground tours of the old slate mine and visits to a subterranean lake.

More upmarket history can be delved into at some of the stately manors in the vicinity – Pencarrow and Lanhydrock are both within 25 minutes, and it’s 40 minutes to Prideaux Place. Prefer history to have a more urban bent? Make the 15-minute journey to Bodmin and explore the jail, regimental museum and town museum.

Hols incomplete without beach days can find satisfaction within 35 minutes at the fishing village of Port Isaac or the town of Newquay, but if sand-free days more appeal, it’s less than half an hour from base to the incomparable Eden Project.

Must see
