Colliford Tavern: Woodland pitches

General

  • Woodland site in spacious Bodmin Moor tavern grounds
  • A 15-minute drive from Bodmin and 25 minutes from the Eden Project
  • Restaurant, bars, games room and fishing on site

If peaceful stays within a few minutes’ stroll of bars, restaurants, evening entertainment and trout fishing appeal, then making your getaway for Colliford Tavern is a must. The family-friendly site is a quarter mile from the shores of Colliford Lake, and 15 minutes’ drive from Bodmin, Cornwall.

In the grounds of a family-run tavern and hotel, the site is well placed for outdoorsy forays. On the famed Bodmin Moor, and within easy reach of lakeside walks, getting out and about is a must. Those comfortable with lengthy wanders should make tracks for Dozmary Pool, the rumoured resting place of King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur. More of a ‘sitting still in quiet contemplation’ type? Colliford Lake is a top spot for rainbow and brown trout fishing, and a licence can be secured at reception.

For taking explores a bit further afield, car hire and bike hire are available through the hotel, putting hikes and Cornish beaches within handier reach, even for those who are travelling without a vehicle. Why not hire both? Throw the bikes in the car and head as far as Wenford Bridge to start the 18-mile cycle (or stroll) along the Camel Trail to Padstow.

On days where straying far doesn’t appeal, simply stick around site: the hotel is open daily for all meals, and the bars are too. An indoor games room and outdoor playground should keep kids busy, and the occasional live music and entertainment should liven up evenings. A kitchen unit for guests makes cutting down on spending a cinch too, and peaceful nights away from the bar can be spent stargazing, as Bodmin Moor is a Dark Sky Reserve.

Please note

The restaurant is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

    Nice location

    Disliked:

Looking a bit rundown. Toilets ok but dated. Bar didn't buy anything but again needs updating.
Mentions stargazing. Unfortunately cloudy while we stayed but the lighting for walkways is way to bright and should be aimed down. As this makes the place brighter than it needs be. Away from site I'd imagine it would be great.
    Bins need clearing!

Location and surrounding area. Pitch was plentiful and not busy.

    Disliked:

Facilities were sub standard, tired and run down shower block. Filthy poorly maintained toilet and shower. Dated and old fashioned bar with extortionately over priced and restaurant very expensive too. Shame as the location is great!

Beautiful location, could be the most amazing place.

    Disliked:

Very messy and dirty shower/toilet block. No cleaning was done while we were there. Litter and human faeces in the woods. Tissues everywhere. Such a shame because it could be the most beautiful site. Very noisy on a Sunday night. Staff giving driving lessons to each other.

Severe lack of cleanliness, site was poorly maintained. The men's block was locked, no explanation or estimation of timeframe, use of the disabled facilities was poor, was evidently not cleaned at all during our stay. The shower in the disabled block was also blocked.

Not much, though staff tried to be friendly

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower blocks were dark and not very clean (urinals blocked in gents)
The Motorhome area is treelined and (I guess due to no sun) muddy and quite rough.
Area outside the bar needs tidying badly as very scrubby and untidy
When we went for a drink all 3 lagers on tap ran out and the rest seemed to be badly stocked.
We had booked for 3 nights and left after 1 night.
The seating area in on of the pictures now has a caravan in it so we only assume out of use.

Small staff obviously working very hard to meet everyone’s needs and to manage a medium size site with a full campsite

Everyone was friendly and happy and facilities such as showers ect clean

    Disliked:

Site is obviously coming back from the difficult times the Pandemic created and also with the number of people staying in Cornwall over the bank holiday. Rubbish needs collecting a little more often and the hotel/bar was tired. However that didn’t bother us as we brought our own Caravan. The touring site is surrounded by very large Conifers which blocked out the Sunshine in the afternoon this was probably it’s biggest downside.

It is what it is though and as long as you go there with your eyes open you will enjoy your stay. Plenty of places to visit and the Jamaica Inn is about 1.5 miles away

Local attractions

History buffs will find lots round here to entertain, starting with some literary history. Five minutes’ drive from base is the Jamaica Inn (yes, the Daphne du Maurier one), and its Smugglers Museum is well worth a visit. Poldark fans will know Cornwall as mining country, and that’s well catered for hereabouts too: it’s 15 minutes from the site to Carnglaze Caverns for underground tours of the old slate mine and visits to a subterranean lake.

More upmarket history can be delved into at some of the stately manors in the vicinity – Pencarrow and Lanhydrock are both within 25 minutes, and it’s 40 minutes to Prideaux Place. Prefer history to have a more urban bent? Make the 15-minute journey to Bodmin and explore the jail, regimental museum and town museum.

Hols incomplete without beach days can find satisfaction within 35 minutes at the fishing village of Port Isaac or the town of Newquay, but if sand-free days more appeal, it’s less than half an hour from base to the incomparable Eden Project.
