  • No-frills Lizard Peninsula camping with sea views near Porthleven
  • A 10-minute drive from Praa Sands beach
  • Dog-friendly grass pitches; pubs, shops and surfing 15 minutes’ walk
Fancy a relaxed sojourn near a gorgeous coastal village in Cornwall – and one with the option of surfing? In that case, it’s time to consider a stay at Treza Camping, an easygoing no-frills spot on the Lizard Peninsula that’s 15 minutes’ walk from both the pretty fishing harbour at Porthleven and its renowned surfing beach. Life on this site, on a working farm overlooking the sea, is indeed pretty chilled. There are no set pitches, so pick your favourite spot on arrival and claim it as your own. Bring torches and batteries as there’s no electricity on the camping field, but low-key facilities do include showers and toilets as well as washing-up sinks. This is a dog-friendly site, and your canine chums can join long family walks on Loe Bar beach (20 minutes’ drive) or hike segments of the South West Coast Path (15 minutes’ walk). And of course, with Porthleven beach being so close, this is a handy spot for families with kids keen to make sandcastles on the shoreline or splash around in the waves. Pick up supplies for the barbecue from Porthleven village (have a nose around the cute harbour, lined with cafés, while you’re there), or abandon the idea of cooking altogether and head down to a harbourside pub for fresh seafood suppers. And finally, one rule for time back on site: this is a peaceful rural area and no loud music is allowed, so please make sure the amplifier stays at home.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Toilets are gender neutral single cubicles and kept clean and well maintained.

Showers are gender neutral and single cubicles, clean and well maintained. Enough hooks which is often a problem so that was great.

Other: washing up, bins, drinking water seen. I think I saw a sign for chemical disposal. It looked like fire wood was available for sale so likely fires are allowed.

The anytime arrival and leaving is fantastic. It meant I could have a slow start to the day which set me up and I know in future I could come for a weekend and not need to be in cornwall earlier than is always possible.

Price is per person rather than per pitch, which is much better for me as a solo vanner.

The owner was about regularly enough if any issues and phone number available outside those times.

Can park/pitch where you like. Van users may desire chocks/wedges in some locations.

Quiet location although some background road noise apparent if you are sensitive. I am but didn’t find it bothersome. Its a big area and you can choose so can go where feels most comfortable. Some areas were more busy than others, these were the flattest areas but there are lots of flat areas mowed into the site. I managed to put myself out the way with a great view without being totally isolated.

The stars are amazing on a clear night due to limited light pollution and you can see the sea and occasional tanker in the far distance.

Located 20 minutes walk to the SW coast path (according to google maps) so would be a great place to stay and walk from site or use as a sleeping stop on a hike backpacking. I left on the day I was doing a walk and there are some free car parks on and close to the path and residential parking not far although the one I used didnt get full.

There is some seating available if backpacking.

Also not far from Helston which has a Lidl and lake with peddlo and kayak plus cycle hire.

The entrance is from a residential road so no tiny country road is required but your satnav may lead you along one depending which direction you come from.

Disliked Shower has one setting. One time showering was ok, the other was too hot.

No accessible facility seen if that is your situation and the site as a whole is on a hill with a flatter area and then flat areas cut in.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Really friendly staff, chilled out vibes, exceptional views, tidy and clean campsite, including the facilities which were everything you needed. Washing up, toilets, showers and drinking water. Dog friendly. Some flat pitches, some on a slope where levelling ramps would be useful. They had fire pits available along with logs. Overall a lovely stay. Very highly recommended.

Local attractions

Surfers, staying at Treza Camping gets you close to Porthleven beach (15 minutes’ walk) with consistent waves and recommended for experts. Novices can catch gentle waves at Poldhu beach (20 minutes’ drive), while Praa Sands (10 minutes) is another popular surfing destination. Non-surfers can take a dip off sandy Loe Bar (20 minutes), with a choice of sea on one side and a freshwater lake on the other. As well as being popular with outdoors fiends, this part of Cornwall packs a cultural punch: departure point for tours to the historic castle and gardens at St Michael’s Mount, pretty seaside Marazion (15 minutes) is also filled with indie art galleries and craft shops, while St Ives (half an hour) on the north coast is home to the famous Tate St Ives gallery. At the western end of the county is Porthcurno (45 minutes), host of musicals and plays at the open-air Minack Theatre (50 minutes). And of course kids get a look in too, with the chance to visit cute rescue seals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (20 minutes).
