Royal Cornwall Events Centre Camping: Electric grass pitches

General

  • Based on Cornwall's County Showground near Cornwall's north coast
  • Five minutes' drive from Wadebridge and 15 minutes from Padstow
  • Spacious, clean and secure with good facilities and far-reaching views

Make camping the main event at this spacious, clean and secure showground site just off the A39 in rural north Cornwall. Surrounded by open countryside a mile and a half from Wadebridge and the river Camel, Royal Cornwall Events Centre Camping is an excellent location for exploring this county's 400 miles of beaches, cliffs and coves.

This expansive site has a choice between wild-style areas that are great for off-grid breaks and pitches with electric hook-ups, all close to the Event Centre's modern toilets and showers; accessible amenities (Space to Change) are also available using the Radar Key Scheme. Wherever you settle down, you'll have access to some simply great scenery – including the prospect of a cracking Cornish sunset or two – and are welcome to bring your dog along (Royal Cornwall Events Centre Camping has a dedicated area for exercising four-legged friends.)

A five-minute drive or walk to Wadebridge is all it takes to get to supermarkets, shops, restaurants and the spectacular Camel Trail (bike hire is available in the town if you haven't brought your own). For beaches, boats and celebrity-owned restaurants, meanwhile, set your sights on the close-by town of Padstow, a 15-minute drive away.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 5 consecutive nights.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

At least one of the party members must be aged 20 or over.

No waste water nor toilet emptying. No staff at all even to check in.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback although we were sorry that you did not find the Elsan / waste water disposal point which is located at the rear of the wooden building as you enter the campsite area with signage on the building. The campsite does not have a manned checkin point but a 24 hour telephone number is shown on the information board (on the same wooden building) to contact our team with any queries. We are sorry that you did not contact anyone as your query over waste water etc disposal could have been quickly answered. Regards, Royal Cornwall Events Centre Camping Team.

The campsite itself has absolutely stunning views. Pitches are a very good size, we were on an electric plot no issues at all with the electric. Loads of water points throughout pitches. Lovely calm peaceful place and a lovely place to walk around. Close to he camel trail where you can cycle to padstow and back to. Nice clean toilets and shower blocks although they are a bit of a walk.
There is a circular path around the pitches where little ones could ride there bikes

    Disliked:

The toilets and shower blocks are a bit far from where you pitch up. Could do with some additional blocks a bit closer to the site. Maybe have their own to the campsite itself rather then the ground. Not necessarily showers but feel toilets should definitely be closer.

I didn’t have a dog with me so wasn’t really looking for the bins to dispose of waste but don’t recall seeing any, what I do recall seeing is watching someone unpleasant letting their dog do something’s equally unpleasant and leave it in the middle of the path/road. This isn’t the sites fault it wasn’t picked up but I don’t recall the waste bin by the site.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your great feedback which is much appreciated, particularly as the camp site has literally just opened and we are of course always keen to improve where we can. We were sorry to hear about the somewhat unthinking action of a dog owner and will make the location for the disposal of dog waste more obvious. We look forward to hopefully welcoming back in the future.

Arrived on the first day of opening and was the 2nd tent on site. Choose your own great sized pitch and the site had fantastic toilet and shower facilities. Electricity points are situated on every ehu pitch and lots of water points located around the site. Site is very quiet with great Cornish countryside views complete with energy windmills on the hillside. Before we had finished putting up our tent, one of our 5 year old twins just got on her bike and rode on her own for the first time on the path at the bottom of the pitches. Her sister was determined to ride her bike as well and managed to do the same on our 2nd day! The site was very safe for children and the girls loved being able to ride up and down the path on their bikes. Lovely lake with picnic area just a couple of minutes walk from the pitches. Tesco (with fuel station), Aldi & B&M just a few minutes drive away with Wadebridge town centre a bit further down the road. Plenty of beaches just a short drive away from Wadebridge and the Camel trail (flat cycling/walking route) can be accessed in Wadebridge or for a longer trail, you can join it in Bodmin and go to Padstow. We would definitely camp here again, even though we only live an hour away and have visited, and can visit the site for it's usually annual Royal Cornwall show and area as a day trip.

    Disliked:

The only minor dislike we found was there was no hot water in the washing up area but we filled our washing up bowl with very hot water from the toilet/shower block and were able to wash our dishes this way.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your great feedback which is much appreciated, particularly as the camp site has literally just opened and we are of course always keen to improve where we can. It was great to hear about your daughter’s cycling exploits and many thanks for the point about hot water for the wash-up area which we plan to very shortly resolve. We look forward to hopefully welcoming back in the future. Regards, the Royal Cornwall Events Centre Team.

Local attractions

First things first – this is Cornwall, so pack up and head for the beach. Polzeath's pretty sands (15 minutes' drive) are a good place to start with many others such as Harlyn Bay, Daymer Bay and Tregirls also nearby. Take the South West Coast Path if you want a walking tour to more remote, under-the-radar spots.

This part of Cornwall is very well set up for family-focused tourism, with top attractions including outdoor play at Camel Creek Adventure Park (10 minutes), a mix of indoor and open-air watersports at Retallack Resort and Spa (10 minutes) and – if you're prepared to drive about an hour to visit its top-rated rides – Flambards Theme Park.

If animals are your thing, then bring along binoculars and lie in wait for passing wildlife on the Camel Trail (five minutes), head to Padstow for an offshore Sealife Safari (15 minutes) or take the kids to the see the wealth of wild beasties at Newquay Zoo (25 minutes). For something a bit more niche, there's also the National Lobster Hatchery (15 minutes), a conservation centre where you can meet baby crustaceans and get the chance to adopt a hatchling.

Must see

  • Cornwall's Crealy Great Adventure Park (3.0 miles)
  • Rock Beach (3.7 miles)
  • Eden Project (10.8 miles)

National Trust

  • Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps (7.3 miles)
  • Trerice (11.5 miles)
