  • Single shepherd's hut at a peaceful Cornwall countryside location
  • Truro, Falmouth and Perranporth beach within 20 minutes' drive
  • Off-grid hut with barbecue, mini kitchen and private bathroom
There’s no electricity in the shepherd’s hut at Whistlers Croft – but you’re unlikely to miss it, say the owners. And with good reason, because this peaceful Cornwall location makes a fabulous place for a digital detox, ditching your gadgets for a while and focusing on the nature around you. And what nature it is – there’s plenty of peace here as there’s just the one shepherd’s hut on site, and there are lovely views all around too, with animals in the surrounding fields and plenty of green hills and farmland just beyond. The owners fell in love with the place when they moved here, and now they’re on hand to help you do that too, helping guests explore on foot or two wheels (there’s bike hire at a café 45 minutes’ walk away) and handing out tips on all the best places to visit around the countryside and coastline. Whether you choose to hit the surf or stroll along rural paths, you’ll be coming back to a cosy shepherd’s hut with bunks (bring your own bedding) and a little kitchen with cooker and kettle. Outside there’s a private toilet and shower unit and a barbecue where you can cook your dinner out in the open air (pick up supplies in Redruth, 10 minutes’ drive away). And while there’s no mains electricity, you will have lights, fires and charging ports to make your stay more convenient.

Local attractions

The lovely Cornish countryside is full of options for outdoor activities – not just walks and bike rides but also canoeing, horse riding and fishing (all within 15 minutes’ drive). You can also dip into local history at places like Cornwall Gold (15 minutes) and King Edward Mine Museum (20 minutes), or take a vintage train ride on the Helston Railway (half an hour). County town Truro (20 minutes) is another good place to visit, for the cathedral, the Royal Cornwall Museum and the indoor market. You may like to take a diversion up to Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm (15 minutes) to pick up some local tipples for your evening as well. Being about halfway between Cornwall’s two coastlines is very handy too. Head south to get to Falmouth with a 20-minute drive, or to gorgeous gardens like Trelissick Garden (20 minutes) and Trebah Garden (25 minutes). The wilder north coast offers up sandy Perranporth beach (20 minutes), arty St Ives (35 minutes) and lots of hidden coves or scenic coast walks.
