  • Romantic rural retreat 15 minutes’ drive from Truro in Cornwall
  • Eden Project half an hour’s drive; Roseland Peninsula 25 minutes
  • Stylish shepherd’s hut with well-equipped kitchen and private patio
When you’re chasing a bit of cosy Cornish downtime with your beloved, and you’d like a few luxurious touches (and gorgeous views over the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty thrown in), take a look at Soarns Shepherd’s Huts. This cosy and romantic retreat from the world is a modern, hand-built shepherd’s hut with south-facing views and sitting in a sheltered apple orchard on a working farm. Designed for maximum comfort, the accommodation includes a kingsize bed (plus high-quality bed linens), a fully functioning kitchen (with Belfast sink, fridge and hob), running water and an ensuite bathroom with shower and heated towel rails. Glamping is even more fun when your electronic stuff works, and here you’re assured of that, thanks to sockets to keep devices charged. And if you’re caught out by a rainy day, the underfloor heating and log burner will keep you nicely toasty as you settle on the comfy sofa for a binge watch on Freeview TV. On balmy summer days, simply move outside to the patio – again with those south-facing views – and spark up the barbecue. Your parking space is a very short walk down a barked pathway that’s lit up at night for your convenience. As you’ll be self-catering on site, pick up supplies in Truro (15 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy a change of scenery, 20 minutes’ stroll from the hut takes you to a traditional pub overlooking the Tresillian River.

Local attractions

There’s no shortage of big-hitting attractions in this corner of Cornwall; first among equals may be The Eden Project (half an hour’s drive), where it’s easy to spend a day wandering among rare plantings in the biospheres and spotting wacky art installations. The Lost Gardens of Heligan (20 minutes) are another top local choice, where you can wander woodland paths to hidden lakes and sculptures on a 200-acre estate. Head south to the spectacular Roseland Peninsula (25 minutes) for a choice of beaches – the site owners recommend Porthcurnick (20 minutes, backed by high cliffs), Towan (half an hour, good rock-pooling potential) and Carne (20 minutes), where you can visit a former Cold War bunker. If you’re surfing mad, make for Perranporth beach (25 minutes) on the north coast for consistent waves and plenty of swell. Or how about discovering some of Cornwall’s prettiest villages? St Mawes (half an hour) has a Tudor-era castle to explore and dolphin-spotting cruises to book, while lively Mevagissey (25 minutes) is the place for a snoop around the fishing harbour and arty boutiques.
