A stay at Merrose St Mawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite in Cornwall offers up an immaculately kept, well-landscaped parkland setting with bags of open space and far-reaching views over the Roseland Peninsula countryside. It’s also only five minutes’ drive from a sandy beach at Porthcurnick, where there’s a well-known café in a wooden shack, and St Mawes is 15 minutes away by car too. This site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and it’s open to non-members as well as members, with discounted rates for members. The price displayed is the member rate; non-members will need to pay the £15/night extra or buy a £69 membership. Membership is certainly worth considering if you're likely to spend more than four nights at a Club site over the coming year – it brings discounts at more than 140 UK sites, plus other perks including access to tailored caravan/motorhome insurance, discounts on days out and savings on top brands. One of the perks of a Club site is its top-quality facilities – and Merrose St Mawes is no different. It has neatly mown pitches, a large playground and an essentials shop in reception. You can find sightseeing inspiration in the information room, and there’s also a designated area for dogs to exercise off lead, so you don’t have to leave your four-legged chums behind at home. Gas and charcoal barbecues are allowed, and a fish and chip van often puts in an appearance – handy for those days when you’re not in the mood to cook. Other practical amenities include spotless shower blocks with a family room and disabled access, a dishwashing area and laundry facilities.

Local attractions

Merrose St Mawes is in pole position for easily exploring the Roseland Peninsula, as the clifftop South West Coast Path is about 20 minutes’ walk away. There are also dog-friendly beaches like Porthcurnick (five minutes’ drive) and Towan (10 minutes) with no restrictions in summer. If you’re looking for solitude, pack a picnic and head to Porthbean Beach (five minutes); chances are you may have it to yourselves. You can also explore gorgeous fishing villages like St Mawes (15 minutes), where there’s a landmark castle and lighthouse. Mevagissey (25 minutes) has a pretty harbour to stroll around, and a ferry runs from there to Fowey (otherwise it’s 40 minutes’ drive) for its estuary walks, browsing in indie shops and lots of dining options. The spectacular biomes full of tropical plants and trees at The Eden Project (40 minutes) warrant a day trip; also not to be missed are the restored gardens and water features in The Lost Gardens of Heligan (25 minutes).
