Callestick Camping: A summer evening

General

  • Wild camping field with spectacular views over Cornish countryside
  • A 40-minute drive to the Eden Project, and 20 minutes from Newquay
  • Dog-friendly pitches on a 25-acre site; the beach 10 minutes’ drive

At the top of a valley overlooking the Cornish village of Callestick, Callestick Camping has uninterrupted views to a historic tin mine over a patchwork of green fields. Families, surfers, walkers – and their dogs – all are welcome on this spacious site near Truro with an off-grid, wild camping vibe.

With 25 acres spread over four fields and only a small number of pitches, you all have plenty of space for playing with the kids and walking the dog safely. Tucked into a sheltered corner of one field is a communal campfire area, and you are welcome to have your own fire by your tent too – so you can be as sociable or private as you feel fit.

From the camping field, it’s a 10-minute stroll into Callestick, home to a well-known ice-cream parlour and a cider farm. Keen to get out in the open air? You can play golf and go horse riding along Perranporth beach (a particularly lovely spot at sunset) in less than 10 minutes’ drive.

This is very much a back-to nature-campsite without electricity, so don’t bring the hairdryer. There are toilets though, plus a gas-heated shower, chemical disposal point and a cold-water washing-up sink.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Minimum spacing of 7 metres between pitches.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Facilities/activities including fire pit are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Emma and Richard are the perfect hosts this very special campsite. A warm welcome and fantastic memories definitely await anyone who camps here. The views...they are just incredible! The toilets and showers always spotless. Pitches are spacious with loads of free space for kids to play. But the part I can't say enough about are the hidden treats with this site, from outdoor cinema nights for the kids to camp cocktails and icecream just some of the things that make this campsite truly magical!

Words don't do this campsite justice, but I am so pleased to have found this little gem!

We embrace absolutely every camping experience, but being a first with dog in tow, we were apprehensive about all sorts of gremlins…we were wrong! So dear Emma, your camp sight has a magic about it that can only be experienced.

Our pitch, was literally perfect for us, so yes please to the same spot next year. I didn’t have the pleasure to experience the showers, but as for the Loo’s, again in our experience immaculate in every way.

We were looking for tranquility from our stay, and definitely received that.

(I would’ve written all this in summary, but the word count is limited) 🙃

Emma was a wonderful host, Fantastic views over the countryside and the little tin mine, We were helped by beautiful sunshine in the morning after the night we stayed. The facilities were brilliant I very much enjoyed the shower. Emma routinely provides teas and coffees to be purchased in the morning, However her son was getting his GCSE results the next morning (hope he did well) 100% would recommend!

Local attractions

Enjoy exploring on foot? Callestick Camping is surrounded by green lanes, bridleways and coastal paths. An easy walk is to Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm (five minutes’ stroll) to sample local scrumpy.

If it’s surfing all the way for you, the fabled Fistral surfing beach is at Newquay (20 minutes’ drive), while Perranporth beach (10 minutes) has three miles of sand and fantastic surfing waves, with plenty of surf schools and hire shops on tap.

To learn about Cornish mining heritage, head for abandoned Wheal Coates tin mine (15 minutes’ drive – recognise it from the TV series ‘Poldark’?), or other relics including Blue Hills (15 minutes) and Great Wheal Charlotte (20 minutes).

The site is fairly central to the north and south coasts, meaning that Cornwall’s main attractions are easily drivable, from Atlantic views at Land’s End Landmark Attraction (50 minutes’ drive) to the biospheres packed with rare plants at the Eden Project (40 minutes). Falmouth (half an hour) offers indie shops and seafront eateries as well as hidden coves to splash around in.
