  • Peaceful site on a working farm a five-minute drive from Mevagissey
  • Eden Project 25 minutes’ drive; Newquay 45 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; permissive footpath to the Lost Gardens of Heligan
Planning an exploration of the southern coast of Cornwall? You can do just that from Higher Kestle Farm Campsite, a five-minute drive along a narrow country road from the fishing village of Mevagissey. Spacious grass pitches at this family-run site are blissfully peaceful and sheltered by tall hedgerows for privacy. You’ll be sharing these rural surroundings with the resident sheep and cows, so be sure to keep your canine companion on a lead while on site. (There is also a dog walk nearby.) The range of well-maintained amenities includes a toilet and shower block (with a separate dressing-up area); a sheltered washing-up corner and a launderette, as well as water points, rubbish bins and recycling facilities. There’s also a freezer for your ice packs, and plenty of wooden picnic tables scattered around the grounds. A selection of produce is available to purchase on site, or you can hit the shops in Mevagissey for your barbecue essentials. (Or for a meal out, for that matter – there are fish and chip shops and other restaurants around the harbour area, not to mention several good pubs.) As for that local exploration, well, you only have to follow your interests. Green-fingered folk might like to take the permissive wooded footpath that leads from the site to the Lost Gardens of Heligan (or you can drive there in five minutes), while watersports enthusiasts probably prefer to head to the coast and beaches like sheltered Portmellon, sandy Pentewan and Porthluney, with kid-friendly shallow waters (all of them 10 minutes’ drive).

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very calm, perfect and clean facilities. We enjoyed every minute. Walking to Heligans Lost Garden was also very pleasant.

Disliked: Pitches were assigned but taken by somebody else, that caused continous discussions, but at the end everybody was happy.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: What a lovely camp site! We made a late booking, as we arrived but this wasn’t a problem. Clear instructions at the gate allowed us to pitch-up easily. Both water and electric points are easily accessible, although we didn’t use the electric. Picnic benches are dotted around between pitches which is a great addition. The grass areas are well maintained with nicely planted areas. Looks very pretty. The facilities block is really nice. Clean, well maintained with plenty of hot water for your shower and washing up. There is an additional laundry area which is really helpful if staying longer. Equipped with an iron and board. Dog friendly site and has a well sign posted dog walk and poo bin provided. We explored the footpaths down to the coast, it’s hilly but this is Cornwall. The fishing port of Mevagissey is just over a mile walk away. Where you can take boat trips, walk around the harbour, enjoy the local pubs and restaurants. My advice would be not to drive there especially in your camper! Richard the owner is on site regularly to answer questions / take payment. Most enjoyable stay thank you

Local attractions

Vibrantly hued camellias and rhododendrons, an avenue of palms and bamboo tunnels are just some of the highlights at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. There is also a vast area of woodland, and several hides from where you can watch kingfishers and other winged residents. In addition to its distinctive biomes (recreating Mediterranean and rainforest habitats), the Eden Project (25 minutes’ drive) features the rather splendid Outdoor Gardens, with colourful wildflower meadows and oversized sculptures. A lively calendar of events includes live music and art exhibitions. Head to the north coast of Cornwall for a visit to Newquay (45 minutes), where you can go on a sea safari to spot dolphins and seals, see turtles and octopi at the Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay, or catch a sunset on sandy Fistral Beach (where you can also have a go at surfing).
