  • Peaceful site on a working farm a five-minute drive from Mevagissey
  • Eden Project 25 minutes’ drive; Newquay 45 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; permissive footpath to the Lost Gardens of Heligan
Planning an exploration of the southern coast of Cornwall? You can do just that from Higher Kestle Farm Campsite, a five-minute drive along a narrow country road from the fishing village of Mevagissey. Spacious grass pitches at this family-run site are blissfully peaceful and sheltered by tall hedgerows for privacy. You’ll be sharing these rural surroundings with the resident sheep and cows, so be sure to keep your canine companion on a lead while on site. (There is also a dog walk nearby.) The range of well-maintained amenities includes a toilet and shower block (with a separate dressing-up area); a sheltered washing-up corner and a launderette, as well as water points, rubbish bins and recycling facilities. There’s also a freezer for your ice packs, and plenty of wooden picnic tables scattered around the grounds. A selection of produce is available to purchase on site, or you can hit the shops in Mevagissey for your barbecue essentials. (Or for a meal out, for that matter – there are fish and chip shops and other restaurants around the harbour area, not to mention several good pubs.) As for that local exploration, well, you only have to follow your interests. Green-fingered folk might like to take the permissive wooded footpath that leads from the site to the Lost Gardens of Heligan (or you can drive there in five minutes), while watersports enthusiasts probably prefer to head to the coast and beaches like sheltered Portmellon, sandy Pentewan and Porthluney, with kid-friendly shallow waters (all of them 10 minutes’ drive).

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked The spacious pitches are great , the facilities are immaculate and I mean immaculate , the peace and quiet is bliss, we did hear the farm dogs on the first night about 11 but it only lasted about 30mins and wasn’t a prob, there is no reception but your name is at the gate with your pitch number so it was easy. Water taps are all around which is convenient
We did the walk to Meva - it’s only 1.5 miles but as I have arthritis it was hard but still a lovely walk, the hills are steep, took us 40 mins - ours neighbours got a taxi who accommodated their dog

Disliked What’s not to like , it would be hard to find a dislike

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Nice small, quiet campsite.
You arrive to a board with your name next to a pitch number. Very easy to find your pitch.
Shower and toilet block clean and tidy. I do like a decent sized shower cubicle, which this is.
Couldn't fault this site at all.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Excellent last minute find for us. Large flat grass pitches with hook-up and water taps not far away. Very good showers, toilet and washing up facilities including draining boards. Concrete blocks available for BBQ's. Elsen and recycling disposal. All for a reasonable pitching fee.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The facilities were clean, new looking with additional washing-up and laundry area.
Decent sized pitches.
Nice short grass.
Easy access to water taps.
Not a huge site.
Easy access for larger vehicles.
Fair price
Well placed for cycling, walking and all activities

Disliked Our pitch was sloping slightly.
There was a lot of yelping and whining coming from the farmhouse which lasted for an hour or so on the evening and morning of our stay but quiet thereafter.
Access should not be via Mevagissy for larger vehicles.

Local attractions

Vibrantly hued camellias and rhododendrons, an avenue of palms and bamboo tunnels are just some of the highlights at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. There is also a vast area of woodland, and several hides from where you can watch kingfishers and other winged residents. In addition to its distinctive biomes (recreating Mediterranean and rainforest habitats), the Eden Project (25 minutes’ drive) features the rather splendid Outdoor Gardens, with colourful wildflower meadows and oversized sculptures. A lively calendar of events includes live music and art exhibitions. Head to the north coast of Cornwall for a visit to Newquay (45 minutes), where you can go on a sea safari to spot dolphins and seals, see turtles and octopi at the Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay, or catch a sunset on sandy Fistral Beach (where you can also have a go at surfing).
