  • Peaceful site on a working farm a five-minute drive from Mevagissey
  • Eden Project 25 minutes’ drive; Newquay 45 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; permissive footpath to the Lost Gardens of Heligan
Planning an exploration of the southern coast of Cornwall? You can do just that from Higher Kestle Farm Campsite, a five-minute drive along a narrow country road from the fishing village of Mevagissey. Spacious grass pitches at this family-run site are blissfully peaceful and sheltered by tall hedgerows for privacy. You’ll be sharing these rural surroundings with the resident sheep and cows, so be sure to keep your canine companion on a lead while on site. (There is also a dog walk nearby.) The range of well-maintained amenities includes a toilet and shower block (with a separate dressing-up area); a sheltered washing-up corner and a launderette, as well as water points, rubbish bins and recycling facilities. There’s also a freezer for your ice packs, and plenty of wooden picnic tables scattered around the grounds. A selection of produce is available to purchase on site, or you can hit the shops in Mevagissey for your barbecue essentials. (Or for a meal out, for that matter – there are fish and chip shops and other restaurants around the harbour area, not to mention several good pubs.) As for that local exploration, well, you only have to follow your interests. Green-fingered folk might like to take the permissive wooded footpath that leads from the site to the Lost Gardens of Heligan (or you can drive there in five minutes), while watersports enthusiasts probably prefer to head to the coast and beaches like sheltered Portmellon, sandy Pentewan and Porthluney, with kid-friendly shallow waters (all of them 10 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

This is a beautifully maintained, peaceful, and clean campsite with spacious pitches. Facilities, including showers and toilets, are consistently praised for their cleanliness and modernity. The location is excellent for exploring Mevagissey and The Lost Gardens of Heligan via pleasant walks, although some note the return journey can be hilly. Wifi is available and generally works well. The site is dog-friendly with a designated walking area. There are occasional mentions of noise from farm dogs and a potential need for more toilet/shower cubicles during peak times. The self check-in process is noted as easy and efficient.

Liked Toilets, Showers, Washing up and Fridge facilities

Disliked Sheep so close to the back field we were in. They were loud all night! Not their fault but wouldn’t pitch in that field again. Also no on site shop.. just a few basics on site would have been ideal. Milk, soft drinks, snacks etc..

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Nice quiet farm, facilities were nice and clean. Local to the gardens of heligian but it's more like a 30/40 minute walk and not sign posted that we could see. Nice little dog walk on the site. Requested to be close to the toilets and they fulfilled this perfectly. Farm shop close by. Close to mevagissey which is lovely

Disliked The house by the entrance to the campsite has dogs and one evening they constantly barked/whined for over 2 hours which got very annoying. Not enough toilet or shower cubicles for the men's or women's for how big the site is, regularly a qué for both. Bins aren't big enough for the site either.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked This campsite is fairly basic but excellent. The individual pitches are spacious. There is generally plenty of room, there aren't too many squeezed into the space they offer. There is a nearby field for dog walking. There are separate dog poo bins near the main bins.
The toilet block is one of the nicest, cleanest blocks I have visited in 20 years! The owner was helpful.
The site was generally quiet and calm, no road noise.

Disliked It's very near a working farm and so for a short period of time there was the sound of heavy machinery like a tractor cutting hedges but it was short lived and in day time hours.

Local attractions

Vibrantly hued camellias and rhododendrons, an avenue of palms and bamboo tunnels are just some of the highlights at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. There is also a vast area of woodland, and several hides from where you can watch kingfishers and other winged residents. In addition to its distinctive biomes (recreating Mediterranean and rainforest habitats), the Eden Project (25 minutes’ drive) features the rather splendid Outdoor Gardens, with colourful wildflower meadows and oversized sculptures. A lively calendar of events includes live music and art exhibitions. Head to the north coast of Cornwall for a visit to Newquay (45 minutes), where you can go on a sea safari to spot dolphins and seals, see turtles and octopi at the Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay, or catch a sunset on sandy Fistral Beach (where you can also have a go at surfing).
