  • Peaceful site on a working farm a five-minute drive from Mevagissey
  • Eden Project 25 minutes’ drive; Newquay 45 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; permissive footpath to the Lost Gardens of Heligan
Planning an exploration of the southern coast of Cornwall? You can do just that from Higher Kestle Farm Campsite, a five-minute drive along a narrow country road from the fishing village of Mevagissey. Spacious grass pitches at this family-run site are blissfully peaceful and sheltered by tall hedgerows for privacy. You’ll be sharing these rural surroundings with the resident sheep and cows, so be sure to keep your canine companion on a lead while on site. (There is also a dog walk nearby.) The range of well-maintained amenities includes a toilet and shower block (with a separate dressing-up area); a sheltered washing-up corner and a launderette, as well as water points, rubbish bins and recycling facilities. There’s also a freezer for your ice packs, and plenty of wooden picnic tables scattered around the grounds. A selection of produce is available to purchase on site, or you can hit the shops in Mevagissey for your barbecue essentials. (Or for a meal out, for that matter – there are fish and chip shops and other restaurants around the harbour area, not to mention several good pubs.) As for that local exploration, well, you only have to follow your interests. Green-fingered folk might like to take the permissive wooded footpath that leads from the site to the Lost Gardens of Heligan (or you can drive there in five minutes), while watersports enthusiasts probably prefer to head to the coast and beaches like sheltered Portmellon, sandy Pentewan and Porthluney, with kid-friendly shallow waters (all of them 10 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

This is a highly-rated, quiet, and well-maintained campsite with spacious pitches. Visitors consistently praise the immaculate and modern shower and toilet facilities. Its location is ideal for exploring Mevagissey and The Lost Gardens of Heligan, with walking routes available. The site is described as peaceful, with friendly hosts, and offers good value for money. Electric optional gravel and hardstanding pitch

Liked Despite staying here during the school summer holidays, the site was spacious and overall, peaceful. The toilet and shower block was very clean and well lit, even at night, and the showers were a nice temperature. Mevagissey is around a 30 minute walk away, which is a beautiful little town, well worth a visit, but be very careful walking the lanes which have no verges to walk on, out of traffic's way. This is obviously no reflection on Higher Kestle site, but it does impact getting around if you haven't got the use of a car.

Disliked Only 2 destinations close by to walk to, these being Mevagissey or the Gardens of Heligan. No public transport unless you walk into Mevagissey first. Also, when approaching from Bodmin, don't follow signs for Higher Kestle Farm, instead follow signs for Higher Kestle Camp Site otherwise, you will be led up a very narrow, winding, uphill track, not at all suitable for motorhomes or caravans. This should really be pointed out when booking.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Lovely quiet campsite, clean and tidy. Great management. Lovely facilities. Lots of information on local area.

Disliked Only thing I would suggest is if the campsite could but a children’s stool in the bathroom as the sinks were high for my little one. Not a big problem, just makes it easier for little ones

Liked Very quiet place to be in and there was table. It is a small place but very quiet to be in and I liked it. The washing area, laundry, toilet/shower and bins area was good and easy access.

Disliked Nothing but just the weather. It was hot.

Local attractions

Vibrantly hued camellias and rhododendrons, an avenue of palms and bamboo tunnels are just some of the highlights at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. There is also a vast area of woodland, and several hides from where you can watch kingfishers and other winged residents. In addition to its distinctive biomes (recreating Mediterranean and rainforest habitats), the Eden Project (25 minutes’ drive) features the rather splendid Outdoor Gardens, with colourful wildflower meadows and oversized sculptures. A lively calendar of events includes live music and art exhibitions. Head to the north coast of Cornwall for a visit to Newquay (45 minutes), where you can go on a sea safari to spot dolphins and seals, see turtles and octopi at the Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay, or catch a sunset on sandy Fistral Beach (where you can also have a go at surfing).
