  • Scenic site in the grounds of Cornwall’s famed Eden Project
  • A 10-minute drive from St Austell and 15 from Polkerris beach
  • Café, fully licensed bar, self-catering kitchen and small shop
Have a taste for Cornish hols with an exotic twist? Settle in to paradise at the YHA Eden Project, a family-friendly site in the grounds of Cornwall’s Eden Project, 10 minutes’ drive from the town of St Austell. Unsurprisingly, this should prove to be a haven for budding botanists and energetic environmentalists: the site’s a few minutes’ walk from the entrance to the Eden Project. Tickets can be bought on arrival for unlimited access during stays, making it an absolute cinch to spend days wandering among rainforests, cacti and wildflowers. If plants’ allure begins to pale, there’s lots else to do at the Eden Project when stays are well timed. There are festivals and festivities held throughout the year, the summer months see even more life and colour than usual with the Eden Sessions, and low season sees the opening of the Eden Project ice rink. Foodies are well taken care of here at the site too: start days off right with a continental breakfast, grab a (pre-ordered) packed lunch before heading off for adventures, and return in the evening for pizzas and drinks at the fully licensed bar. There’s also a self-catering kitchen for guests’ use and a barbecue area for outdoor eats, and (of course) plenty of eateries within the Eden Project.

Local attractions

Anyone drawn here by the Eden Project will find plenty more hereabouts to keep them close to nature: the stunning Lost Gardens of Heligan are 25 minutes’ drive from the site for wanders and wildlife, there’s an aquarium and a zoo in Newquay (35 minutes), and just five minutes away are the deer, foxes and owls of Prideaux Wood. Outdoorsy types who think the only way to experience nature is to exercise their way through it will be best pleased too. The Cornish Way cycle route – part of the National Cycle Network – passes the site and joins up with the Camel Trail and a mountain biking centre is 15 minutes away. For hikes and rambles, the long-distance South West Coast Path is accessible 10 minutes' drive from the site. Of course, there are other ways to enjoy the coast… It’s less than 15 minutes to the sandy cove of Polkerris beach, part of the Cornish Riviera – a must-visit for swimming, strolls, and watersports including windsurfing, paddleboarding and sailing. For a touch of history, learn about the Cornish coast’s history of shipping disasters at the Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre (10 minutes), grab a drink half an hour away at the Jamaica Inn (made famous by Daphne du Maurier), or explore stately piles at Trerice, Cotehele and Lanhydrock, all handily within 50 minutes.
