  • Cosy bell tents close to north Cornwall surfing beaches
  • A 10 minutes’ drive to Portreath; 25 minutes to St Ives and Marazion
  • Pop-up site with grass pitches, five minutes’ drive to pubs and shops
A small and family-run pop-up site with boutique styling, The Canvas Meadow is set among centuries-old copper and tin mines on the North Cornwall coast – in fact you can see the chimney of one of them from the site. And being so close to the Atlantic, some of the county’s most popular surfing beaches and fishing villages are within 10 minutes’ drive. The site has everything you need for a chilled stay, so all you need to bring is a bag of clothes, a surfboard and bedding… everything else is all set up and waiting for you. Cosy bell tent interiors have blankets to keep you toasty as well as plenty of storage space. Each unit comes with two single beds and one double, all of which have proper mattresses. A small kitchen area with a camping stove, pans, crockery, cutlery, a toaster and kettle is available, and there's a coolbox provided to keep perishables fresh. A charcoal barbecue, outside seating and outdoor furniture are all included too. A shower block with loos and a washing-up area is a short step away from the tents, which are all prettied up with festoon lights after dark so you can see your way around. Other shared facilities include a surfboard storage area, a basic on-site shop for essentials and a communal are where different themed evenings are held (cider tasting, folk music and seafood may all be on the agenda). Bracing walks and bike rides are the order of the day, with paths leading directly from the site, and you can exercise the dogs on the beach at Portreath (10 minutes) or Porthtowan (five minutes) – the site has its own dedicated dog shower where you can hose them down afterwards. Both these seaside villages have something of a gourmet reputation, so if you’re off cooking duty for your camping break, never fear – a wander around their streets will turn up seafood pubs, fish and chip shops and – off course – cafes for scrummy cream teas. And you’re in Cornwall, don’t forget, so it’s jam on the scone before clotted cream. A butcher's shop is within walking distance too and can sort you out with barbecue packs.

Local attractions

Chances are you’re going to want to get out on the water. Surfers can head for Porthtowan (five minutes' drive) or Portreath (10 minutes) for consistent waves, or you can try out coasteering near Penzance (half an hour). For a gentler pursuit, try practising your swing at a nine-hole golf course (10 minutes). Arty types might like to head down the Atlantic coastline to St Ives for its cluster of contemporary galleries and spectacular art in Tate St Ives. Marazion is another pretty spot for rooting around in galleries and indie boutiques, and from there you can walk across the bay to the cliffside gardens at Mount St Michael (all 25 minutes). Cornwall has several other inspiring gardens to mooch around as well. Have a wander through the subtropical palms at Trebah Garden (half an hour) or head for the wild plantings at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, to see once-lost parkland brought back to life. And of course, the glass biomes and rare flora of The Eden Project (both 45 minutes) make a fun-filled day out for all the family.
