  • Peaceful Cornish site in an accessible location just off the A30
  • Five minutes' drive to Redruth town centre or 10 minutes to Portreath
  • Far-reaching views over the local area; dogs welcome
Feel at ease on every pitch at Sunset Camping, a quiet and very welcoming family-friendly campsite in central Cornwall. Located a short distance from the A30 near Redruth, this west-facing spot is well positioned to soak up all-day sunshine and has some truly lovely views over the surrounding area. Here you can watch the sun setting over the sea, take an evening stroll along the coast at Portreath's dog-friendly beach (10 minutes' drive), or relax with your pet (if you've brought one) over an end-of-day barbecue or campfire back at base. As for your days, you won't be short of options to fill them here: this centrally located site is within an hour's drive of most of the Cornish mainland, with top highlights like the Lizard Peninsula, Falmouth, Newquay, St Ives and Padstow all easy to reach. Sunset Camping is in a particularly prime location for walkers and cyclists, close as it is to the protected coastal areas around Godrevy and St Agnes (both 10 minutes), the Coast To Coast Trail and the Great Flat Lode Trail (10 minutes), steeped in attractive country views and Cornish mining history. Redruth (five minutes) is conveniently close to hand too, with pubs, cafés, supermarkets, a cinema and a railway station where you can set off on car-free day trips. Even closer to home are a dog-friendly pub, a discount supermarket and a play park (at North Country) – all of these are within a handy 10-minute stroll.

#4 electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Everything. Facilties are clean, practical and sufficient for everything you can require - there is even a spare tent pump in case you need it! The pitches are spacious, and being individually segregated gives an extra element of privacy. The site sells firewood at a reasonable price, for a fire pit if you have one, or want to use the ones available on site. The site is small and quiet which is perfect for couples or lone travellers. It is well located for getting around and seeing the most of Cornwall. Shops within easy proximity for picking up anything you need.

Liked: Not alot

Disliked: On arrival at the site, we were greeted by a construction/building site. This was also to be our view for the stay. We also backed onto a very busy road. What was originally booked for a 2-night stay, lasted less than 12 hours. We emailed the owners but had no reply. The building works should have been disclosed at booking, to make an informed decision. We also felt that other pitches were being used as permanent bases rather than for holiday use.

#3 electric grass pitch (XL)

Liked: Campsite was clean and local beaches and tourist attractions were close by.

Disliked: BEWARE the road is very close. We could feel the vibration of vehicles passing by all the time. Does not reduce at night. The noise made it difficult to sleep. The shower and toilet facilities are clean but very basic. There is not much room to dry and change in the shower. The toilets do not have any soap to wash your hands or provide anything to dry them. They could do with some hooks to store your wash stuff and possibly mirror or shelf. The pitch had some very large over hanging trees that could be problematic for larger tents/campervans.

#1A electric grass pitch

Liked: The pitches are a decent size and the owners were helpful and pleasant. Lights at night lit up the main facilities area.

Disliked: We wouldnt stay again. Showers were cold, and I had to hold the button one morning, so I couldn't wash properly. 2 porta loo toilets, 1 didn't have soap for the 4 days we were there and the other one was on its last legs and I assume another fellow camper added some water to have enough soap to wash their hands - makes me question if they were cleaned. The road is very noisy at night. Expensive for what it is, I've stayed in much nicer campsites with far better facilities for less.

#2 electric grass pitch (XXL)

Liked: The size and the amount of privacy available in the sites are some of the best I've seen in the UK. Every site is slightly different which gives them different characteristics for different types of campers. Everything was very clean and well cared for. Although the showers aren't fancy, they worked well and were very clean. The kitchen sink was very useful and was always spotless. It's a small, family run business and it's clearly a well taken care of piece of land. It's only a few minutes off the A30 which makes exploring Cornwall a breeze and it's only 10 minutes out of the nearest beach town, Portreath.

Disliked: The only thing that really made our stay a little annoying was traffic noise from the small road nearby. Our site, #2, was right next to the road which took a few nights to get used to when sleeping. I think the further in sites would be less noisy. The road noise is not something that the owners have any real control over, so no fault to them. The freezer was also not working properly. I put my ice blocks in to refresh them on day one and they never fully froze.

Local attractions

Delve into the local geology at Cornwall Gold and Tolgus Mill, a fab heritage centre five minutes' drive from base. From there, you might like to set off to Porthtowan beach (10 minutes), a dog-friendly seaside spot with spectacular scenery, or you could learn more about flora and fauna from around the world at Feadon Wildlife Education Centre (10 minutes). Grownup activities in the local area include the greens at Tehidy Golf Course (10 minutes) and Healey's Cornish Cyder Farm (10 minutes), where you can sample some of the West Country's top apple-based tipples. There are also wineries to explore around the Camel Trail (35 minutes), an off-road cycle route that takes in a gorgeous stretch of Cornish countryside. Got kids to keep entertained? You might appreciate being so close to Paradise Park and JungleBarn Cornwall (15 minutes), a local activity centre that's pretty sure to keep them busy. The steam trains at Lappa Valley (25 minutes) and the cute animals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (30 minutes) are also pretty safe bets.
