  • Luxury safari tents on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from Penzance
  • South West Coast Path and St Michael's Mount 15 minutes’ drive
  • Fully equipped kitchens and ensuite shower rooms; honesty shop
There are farm holidays, and then there are the luxury farm holidays at Feather Down Farm - Treganhoe Farm, a 10-minute drive from Penzance, on Cornwall’s Penwith peninsula. You can expect all the comforts from home at this working livestock farm run by Ivor, Sue and their kids – from an ensuite shower room to a fully equipped kitchen. And don’t think for a minute that you and your family will be living on top of each other: with close to 50 square metres of floor space (and three bedrooms) in each canvas tent, you’ll have plenty of room to spread out. Oh, and bed linens and towels are provided, so no need to load up the car with half the contents of your airing cupboard. Also provided are logs for the woodburning stove, plus candles and matches – that’s right: the site has no electricity, so it’s luxury with a hefty dose of cosy ambience. An honesty shop is stocked with delicious local offerings, and you can cook your meals indoors or, if you’re after a ‘back to nature’ vibe, on the firepit outside the tent. There’s also an oven around which guests can gather on pizza nights, not to mention several pubs serving traditional food and real ale within a 10-minute drive of the site. Speaking of the local area, there’s plenty to see and do in the vicinity, from hiking the South West Coast Path (15 minutes) to swimming or surfing at spectacular beaches like Pedn Vounder and Porthcurno (20 minutes).

Local attractions

Just off the shore at Marazion (15 minutes), St Michael's Mount can be reached via a paved causeway at low tide – and by boat at any other time. Once on the island, you can visit the hilltop castle, the medieval church and the (seasonal) garden cascading down the rocky terraces. Head to Land’s End (20 minutes), the westernmost point on mainland Britain, for rugged clifftop walks, spectacular sunsets over the sea and plenty of marine birdlife, from gannets to kittiwakes. Other attractions include a petting farm and the iconic sign with distances to various cities across the globe. On the north coast of Cornwall, St Ives (25 minutes) is known for its modern and contemporary art scene, which you can explore in venues such as Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Take the time to stroll around the town itself, with its pretty stone cottages and narrow alleyways, and relax on sandy Porthmeor Beach watching surfers ride the waves.
