  • Spacious, natural site on an organic beef farm in Cornwall's far west
  • A 20-minute drive from Penzance and 35 minutes from St Ives
  • Livestock, far-reaching rural views and archeological remains on site
Play at pirates at Penzance, privateers at Porthcurno or marauders at Mousehole before beating a retreat back to The Field of Stars, a sightly and spacious site right at the far end of Cornwall. This well-located beef farm is surrounded by the sea on pretty much all sides, with fab far-reaching views over local Penwith Peninsula countryside to keep you in the holiday mood when you're not splayed out on the beach. If animal life's your thing, you'll certainly appreciate the sight of winsome Welsh cattle grazing in neighbouring fields, not to mention the wild creatures that often scuttle through the more overgrown parts of this natural haven. Because there's so much animal life about, any dogs staying with you here will need to be on leads – and their best behaviour – while on site (given the number of dog-friendly beaches nearby, this is unlikely to be a big issue). There are also ancient archeological remains to be seen on this land – just ask if you're interested and the owners will try to sort out a visit. The main field's facilities include drinking water points, a washing-up sink, composting and flush toilets and hot electric showers. There's also a handy communal fridge freezer and an electric socket for charging phones. Off-site facilities within a 10-minute drive include a bakery and pub.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved The Field of Stars site. It’s got a lovely wild camping feel but has all the things you need including a hot shower, fridge/freezer and charging point. We loved the communal shed and sink where we ended up cooking most of our meals out of the wind! Jo was really great and has thought of everything to make it a really nice site. She’s really limited the number of pitches so it’s super quiet which is just what we wanted. We were also lucky enough to see the stars overnight and they were absolutely incredible! We will definitely be returning. Thank you again Jo Claire and Martin

Bell tent

Liked: As a party of 6 ( 2 adults, 4 kids) we found this hidden gem on pitchup and we are so glad we did! We stayed in the pre-pitched bell tent which was easily big enough for all 6 of us. It comes with a double futon too which is a nice touch. The tent is pitched in a very private area surrounded by hedging which was a breath of fresh air as we didn’t feel like we were living on top of someone else’s pitch! We felt like we had a great level of privacy which you don’t find at a lot of other campsites. Cars can be parked right by the tent too. The bell tent had a fire pit included in the price so we could buy our own wood and have great campfires under the stars. Many other campsites will charge per night for a fire pit, so this made our stay even better value for money. The site has a hot electric shower, drinking water, a flushable loo and a composting loo in a converted horse trailer. All were absolutely fine, clean, and not smelly at all. There is also a washing up station, communal fridge freezer, and a place to charge your phone. The campsite is beautiful, nestled in the gorgeous Cornish countryside and close to many of the amazing beaches Cornwall has to offer (car dive away). Sennen and Porthcurno beaches were just amazing. We even went up to St Ives and Hayle beach as it was not too far to drive to these places for a day out. At the campsite, tracks are mown into the long grass which helps to separate pitches and gives the field a spacious feel. The site is great if you are looking for a quiet, serene place to stay that’s safe for kids to run around. It has amazing starry nights and you can even see the Milky Way when the weather is good. It is quite off the beaten track on farmland, so if you stay here ensure to follow the owner Jo’s directions to avoid coming up the wrong lane which isn’t suitable for cars. The route she gave to the site was fine for cars. We would 100% stay here again. Jo is a great host and the two farm dogs and three cats were lovely. If you want a commercial campsite this is not the place for you, but if you want somewhere peaceful with amazing scenery and starry nights where you have space and don’t feel cramped in, this campsite is the place to go. Thank you Jo for our lovely stay, we hope to stay again!

From the manager: It was really lovely to meet you all! I'm really pleased that you had a great stay and that you enjoyed the stars and all the campsite has to offer. It sounds like you made the most of the fun activities and places to visit that this part of Cornwall had to offer. Thanks Isobel and family, and friends for being such lovely guests, and for the beautiful photos too. I would welcome you all back to stay anytime.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Field of stars was wild camping at its finest, it was surround by a beautiful setting & when the sun went down it certainly lived up to its name. Basic amenities all fully functional with a gorgeous hot shower to start & end your day.

Disliked: Wish the pitches where flatter, lots of long grass which continually put you on a slope.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Nice view and helpful staff onsite.

Disliked: Amenities were very basic, just 1 toilet and shower. Think the site is meant be a bit wild and rustic but that turned out not to be our cup of tea.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Lucy, I'm sorry to hear that my campsite wasn't your cup of tea. I guess we are all different. Just to let other people know who will read this review that there are 2 different compost toilets as well as one flushing toilet and a hot electric shower. I keep the numbers of guests low, so that there is enough facilities for the guests that stay with me. I am rewilding parts of the field to encourage more wildlife of all sorts and it is rustic as it's a pop up campsite on an organic farm and not a registered conventional campsite. My hope is by sharing my campsite with people, that being in an environment surrounded by nature will help them to relax and unwind from their normal lives. Best wishes Jo

Liked: It does what it says on the tin, it was really the Field of Stars! The facilities were cleaned daily and kept at a good condition. There is a fridge and freezer, plus electricity to charge your phone by the toilets. Jo gave instructions on how to reach the campsite and also on must do activities/visits during our stay. Great experience overall.

Local attractions

Culture and coastal views? They really do make quite the combo. Open-air theatre is on the cards at the Minack Theatre in Porthcurno (30 minutes' drive), a simply stunning stage set against the ever-changing backdrop of the sea. Other artsy jaunts are up for grabs at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens (30 minutes), Penlee House Gallery and Museum (30 minutes) and Tate St Ives (35 minutes). Cornwall's clement climate also makes it a prime pick for gardeners, who have created a spectacular variety of horticultural havens around here. Some of the best include Morrab Gardens (20 minutes), a three-acre subtropical park in Penzance, Trewidden Garden (15 minutes), a larger botanical affair, and Tanglewood Wild Garden (10 minutes), whose name is pretty self-explanatory. The Eden Project? That'll be a longer drive (an hour and 20 minutes), but day trips to Britain’s biggest biodomes are still very much doable. The landscape around here truly is a sight for sore eyes, but if you're planning on sticking around for a longish spell and fancy a break from the mainland you can also sail over to the Scilly Isles from Penzance (20 minutes' drive, then a crossing of two hours and 40 minutes).
