Killaworgey Farm: Grass pitches

General

  • Friendly site on a family-run farm in central Cornwall
  • A 15-minute drive to Newquay and 25 minutes to the Eden Project
  • Adventure playground on site; easy access to the A30

Killaworgey Farm’s location on the edge of the tiny village of Black Cross is about as central as it gets in Cornwall – and there’s good access to the A30 too, making this family-run site an excellent base for getting out to explore every corner of the county.

This is a peaceful rural spot indeed, but it’s also very handy for all sorts of outings – it’s about a 15-minute drive to Newquay on the north coast or 25 minutes to Charlestown on the south coast. There are plenty of other attractions within a half-hour drive too, including the Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Lappa Valley Railway and Lanhydrock. Surfing, kayaking, coasteering, climbing and lots of woodland and seaside walks are all within easy reach too, so you’ll have plenty to keep you busy.

In between all these outings you’ll be staying at a friendly site that’s been nicely thought out, with a cosy covered seating area and an adventure playground as well as a washing-up area and smart toilet and shower facilities with disabled access. Spacious pitches are around the edge of the hedged camping field, with the centre left open for playing games and running about.

For safety reasons, campfires aren’t allowed at this site, but you are allowed to bring a barbecue (the site will provide you with blocks to keep them off the grass). There are plenty of options nearby for meals out or takeaways, including pubs, fish and chip shops and Indian and Chinese restaurants.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

The campsite is set in a field with a lovely view over the country side. Not a far drive from Newquay and surrounding beaches. The showers and toilets are modern and clean. The pitches are flat and spacious. There also is a socialising area with benches, shade and space for children. Staff were friendly and nice.

    Disliked:

The campsite is however down a long track.

Not a lot to dislike, Needs to be advertised better that it’s a (Non-smoking site)

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. With regard to the smoking; as discussed with you personally during your stay, we sent out a message saying no smoking as we were concerned about the extreme dryness of the grass due to the amazing hot weather we had been experiencing. Some campers were not being a sensible as we would like with BBQ's, candles and cigarettes, and a wild fire on dry grass would spread quickly around the site endangering the safety of campers, our family, our property and our animals (sheep, chickens, dogs and cats). We gave alternative options in our discussion about the "no smoking" message. Smoking during damp weather will not start fires; smoking in a heat wave increases the risk, as evidenced by the wildfire started on the A30 the same weekend by a discarded cigarette end.

Which coast first? Well, the north is marginally closer – it’ll take you 15 minutes to drive to the surf hotspot of Newquay or 20 minutes to the wide sandy beach at Perranporth. The south coast is worth exploring too, for the fishing villages of Mevagissey (half an hour drive) and Fowey (35 minutes) or a stroll around the Lost Gardens of Heligan (half an hour).

Meanwhile, somewhere in between the two, you can walk in Cardinham Woods (20 minutes), hire bikes for Camel Trail rides from Wadebridge (20 minutes), explore the biomes of the Eden Project (25 minutes) or take a ride on the Lappa Valley Railway (25 minutes). Springfield Fun Park is five minutes’ drive away for pony rides, tractor rides and animal feeding.

To soak up some of the area’s history, slot in trips to the Wheal Martyn Clay Works (15 minutes), and the Shipwreck Treasure Museum (25 minutes), or explore the estates at Trerice (10 minutes) and Lanhydrock (20 minutes).
