Wheal Rodney Holiday Park: A view of the camping meadow

General

  • Small, cosy and family-run park a mile from Marazion
  • A short walk from St Michael's Mount
  • Free pool and spotless amenities

Sites near the coast are rather special. Particularly when they’re Cornish, less than a mile from a beauteous bay, and with a heated indoor pool in which guests can wallow wrinkedly all the winter day if the mood so takes them – for free…

Drive down a country lane surrounded by fields to reach small, family-run and exceedingly esteemed Wheal Rodney Holiday Park, a mile from Marazion and a short saunter to St Michael's Mount. It’s easy to drive to the other attractions of west Cornwall from here (the Lizard Peninsula, Land’s End and Penzance are all close by), but the kids won’t have time to say they’re bored before you’re at arty St Ives and the north coast, Helston and Flambards, or the Isles of Scilly from Penzance or Land's End.

The majority of Wheal Rodney’s guests are families, but their welcome extends to all, dogs included, who’ll probably wag their tails at the countryside walks straight from the site and the list of dog-friendly Cornish beaches available in reception.

The spotless facilities building has the site reception, shower blocks with free hot water, launderette and the aforementioned free swimming pool, open from 9am daily. Ice pack freezing and phone and gadget charging are also gratis for guests.

Other facilities on site include an Elsan point, recycling and a shop for essentials: if your holiday equals not having to cook, the Fire Engine Inn with a temptingly tasty menu and beer garden is under 10 minutes’ stroll from Wheal Rodney. As with the site, dogs and children are whealy welcome too...

Absolutely loved this wonderful camp site, excellent facilities, friendly and welcoming staff, great location, a short walk to Marazion Town, so great for St Michaels Mount, and costal walks, excellent covid-19 measures in place, unfortunately due to high winds we ended up losing our tent on our second night😕, But the staff was amazing and arranged for us to stay in one of there lodges for the remainder of our stay, The lodges where we'll equipped with everything you could possibly need, clean and comfortable, I will definitely recommend and return to this little gem of a camp site💎 definitely a 10 out of 10 ❤️

Location was quite good but thats about all.

    Disliked:

When we arrived no one was their to meet us, no information on what we were supposed to do, except if reception was shut their was a blue shed which was open.
Saw a member of staff told her we had arrived, staff replied would let donna no, that was it (very helpful not)
So in the end went into the blue shed after waiting over half a hour, saw an envelope with our name on took it, located where we were staying, and found it ourselves.
It's not a big camp site but thought someone would have greated us you can still do that and social distance.
Every other camp site we have visited this year during covid19 has welcomed us personally, and shown us where we would pitch up.
Toilets were also locked if someone was taking a shower and you were not in their bubble. (Although the showers were at one end and toilets at the other so social distancing would have been fine) three sets of separate Toilet blocks so 6/7 toilets out of you because someone was taking a shower!!!!!
So if you need the Toilet like i did first thing in the morning, all three blocks were locked, so i was told i could use the porta loo in the car park, we all no what their like not very clean, but i was desperate to go.
Only anti bacterial hand wash to clean hands, No soap or water which you should use after using the toilet.
Which is going against covid 19 stay safe rules, all because of someone having a shower.
Oh and if i did question about booking in and the toilets all i got told is read your e-mail or information sheet.
    Really helpful.

Shower/toilet block was convenient and well-kept; site shop was reasonably priced & well stocked; management were friendly and helpful - when our tent collapsed on the second night due to wild and wet winds, they upgraded us free of charge to one of their bell tents! (Which are comfy, spacious and, most importantly, dry!)
Also liked the short country walk to nearby Marazion to catch local bus connections to the peninsula sights of Land's End and St Ives.

I loved this camp site, very clean and looked after, had everything from showers, toilets and a little shop onsite, also has laundry facilities and access to fridge. The staff are very polite and helpful and are very to quick to respond to any questions you have. Dogs are welcome too which is nice for people who wish to bring theirs along.

    Disliked:

The ground here for pitching tents is extremely hard due to large rocks under the grass. The tent had to be moved around a number of times to allow us to peg it down resulting in rather a lot of bent pegs and a small (repairable) hole in the base of the tent.

Local attractions

There are so many top-notch beaches around west Cornwall (25 within easy reach of Wheal Rodney) that it can be hard to pick where to stretch out on the sand/rookpool/surf at first… Marazion is a bonzer beach startoff point from Wheal Rodney, as not only it is a piffling mile away, but it has two beaches: the main Town Beach and a much quieter and hidden one at Steps Beach (the latter is dog-friendly all year round).

Overlooking Town Beach is the medieval castle on St Michael’s Mount, the rocky island halfway along Mount’s Bay and now managed by the National Trust. Both are within strolling distance of Wheal Rodney: sail out to the island from Mount’s Bay for a harbour tour and a gawp at the subtropical gardens, viewable when peering down from the castle battlements.

Fishing villages, clandestine coves and golden sands are speckled along the Cornish coast from Wheal Rodney: take a day at each if you can (the boss will understand) for fishing in Mullion and Porthleven, surfing at Sennen Cove and Praa Sands, diving and shipwreck hunting at Falmouth’s Porthkerris Beach, or just having a gape at the celebrated scenery of the Lizard’s Kynance and Kennack Sands.

When sand is dusted from toes, Marazion town centre is a gem for art galleries, antiques and jewellery: Penlee House at Penzance three miles away and Tate St Ives seven miles north are also a big draw for artistes. Both towns have several other art galleries, more beaches (of course) and the opportunity to sing very loud and tuneless sea shanties with pirates at Penzance.

The St Ives Bay Line from Penzance to St Ives is one of the most scenic you’ll see anywhere in the country; for added viewsomeness, walk to Penzance from Marazion along the South West Coast Path, stopping very frequently to snap the scenery at Mount’s Bay, Mousehole and the Lizard.

Thirteen miles from Wheal Rodney towards the southwest, have your photo taken at the famous signpost at Land’s End, where also cordially recommended is partaking of a Cornish cream tea at the Land’s End restaurant.

And while you’re in the area, stick around into the evening for a performance at the open-air Minack Theatre, 11 miles from Wheal Rodney in the direction of Land’s End. Its season runs from May to September, but theatre fiends can take a guided tour any time of year, something that also comes cordially recommended…
