General

  • Peaceful farm between Looe and Liskeard
  • Campfires allowed: buy organic eggs or rare breed meat to sizzle up
  • Picnic tables, communal kitchen, showers and toilets

Those among you who like luxury berths, teeny tiny farm sites, cracking customer service and picking up fresh organic eggs/rare breed meat to sizzle gently over the campfire should flock to Penbugle Farm (‘shepherd’s hill’ in Cornish) for some properly peaceful days.

Even by Cornish standards, the location of Penbugle Farm is one to toot about: between the old market town of Liskeard and the fishing port of Looe; 25 minutes from the Tamar Bridge and the Devon/Cornwall border, and halfway between the highlights of Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. It’s run by the five members of the hospitable Ridout family, who have been living on and farming this land since moving from Dorset in 2005: if this is your first visit to Cornwall, they’ll be happy to share their tips and info on things to do.

On the farm, you won’t even hear a car engine roaring past your pitch – cars are only allowed in the designated parking area outside the paddock to keep things as safe and sedate as possible on site. (Fret not if you’re thinking this means you have to stagger to your berth with armfuls of kit; wheelbarrows and trolleys are provided to cart your stuff/over-excited small children/the dog along to where you’re staying.)

Guests all have access to the pristine Penbugle facilities including toilets, showers, a washing-up area with hot and cold taps, and a cleanly-kept communal kitchen with cooker, microwave, fridge, kettle, pots and pans (recycling facilities are available too).

Outdoors, there are picnic tables to park at and have your campfire-cooked meal; you can pick up fresh farm and local produce on site when available, as well as wood and fuel for a campfire or barbie. And don’t forget your torch and wellies: this is serious stargazing country because of the low light pollution…cosmic.

Absolutely loved this farm. As a family of 5 (and a dog) with children ranging from 2-13 everyone had a brilliant time. We stayed in a pod which was very large inside. The pod was extremely clean and tidy as were the beautiful fields. There were green fields and beautiful views from all of the pods. We were given a lovely warm welcome and taken to our pod. There was a fridge with freshly bottled milk, fresh butter and local eggs, burgers and sausages to purchase. Our highlight was sitting around our fire pit every evening with bundles of logs burning and cooking food on the fire pit too. The girls enjoyed toasting their marshmallows and curling up in their beds.
If you didn’t want to use the fire pit there is a fully equipped kitchen near the pods with all of the utensils you need. A microwave and toaster too.
The location was great for all of the beaches. We were an arms reach from Padstow and the northern beaches and the same for the south. We spent an evening in Looe crabbing which was just down the road and enjoyed retiring back to our pod later. We will be recommending Penbugle to everyone we know and will be returning.

Fantastic to hear you had such a lovely break with us and wow how busy you all have been!
We take for granted how close we are to most of the places you mention and the activities on offer.
Your camping pod sounds as if you were all very snug and cosy and lots of fun had, come see us again,

What an amazing relaxing experience. Great facilities, everything there that you could possibly need from toilet roll to logs for the campfire. Fresh milk, eggs, sausages, bacon etc straight from the farm..excellent. Shower and toilet block cleaned daily. The Pods were spacious, clean and cosy. Having a fridge, toaster and KETTLE made the experience that much better. Lovely hosts..very welcoming and helpful.

    Disliked:

The wasps are in abundance in this country at the moment so they were a pain.

From the manager...

Sorry about the wildlife! It has been a busy year for wasps which is a first for us at Penbugle…. It must be the amount of hedgerow fruit we have this year due to such prolonged sunshine..One of the joys of being Organic too!
Lovely to hear you really enjoyed your stay with us and tried the local produce we had available onsite.

The Pod was awesome, lots of space, kettle, toaster and fridge, very clean and tidy. Great bbq and fire pit just outside. Plenty of room from other pods. Lizzie was really friendly and welcoming as we arrived.

    Disliked:

The shower / toilet was adequate but not up to the same standards as the pod. You are unable to park you car next to the pod and have to walk your stuff across, it was no big deal but a bit annoying in the rain.

From the manager...

Great that you enjoyed your stay in the camping pod, we feel they're are still the best style out there!
We take on board your comments about the facilities but when you have communal use it will never match the standards of the accommodation as we rely on everyone being thoughtful of each other while using them.
We have always disallowed vehicles in the same area as the accommodation and it is clearly mentioned in the details before bookings are taken, sorry you hadn't noticed but it is very important to us that families with young children have a safe and relaxing holiday too and the area you move into is a green space....

Local attractions

Two of Cornwall’s top attractions, the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, are both within half an hour’s drive, but those wanting to stay local or travel by foot/pedal will find a varied load of activities, attractions and landscapes around Penbugle Farm and south-east Cornwall, from rivers to valleys to coastline.

The closest village to the farm is Duloe, set among deep valleys between the east and west sections of the River Looe. Popular activities with guests to these parts include seeing the Duloe stone circle, the smallest in Cornwall and dating back to the Bronze Age, and watersports or fishing in the Looe river.

Salmon, brown trout and sea trout can all be landed from both stretches of the River Looe, with shoals more fish and fishing in Looe itself; if you don’t want to take one of the numerous sea fishing trips to land your own catch, wait for the boats to come back from a day’s haul and pick up some from them.

From Duloe, it’s about four miles north to ancient Liskeard, one of the few towns in Cornwall still to have a weekly livestock market and now with a lively arts scene along its independent shops and restaurants. Coastwards, St Austell and Polperro are both close to hand too, with both top for day trips: Polperro for the Heritage Museum of Smuggling & Fishing to learn about Cornwall’s nefarious past and St Austell for the China Clay Country Park and the start of the Clay Trail.

To the east, it’s about 16 miles from Penbugle Farm to Plymouth for all activities seafarer and landlubber.
