Penbugle Farm: Ruby, one of our 3 rare breed Dales ponies saying 'hello' while the cows are grazing behind

General

  • Peaceful farm between Looe and Liskeard
  • Campfires allowed: buy organic eggs or rare breed meat to sizzle up
  • Picnic tables, communal kitchen, showers and toilets

Those among you who like luxury berths, teeny tiny farm sites, cracking customer service and picking up fresh organic eggs/rare breed meat to sizzle gently over the campfire should flock to Penbugle Farm (‘shepherd’s hill’ in Cornish) for some properly peaceful days.

Even by Cornish standards, the location of Penbugle Farm is one to toot about: between the old market town of Liskeard and the fishing port of Looe; 25 minutes from the Tamar Bridge and the Devon/Cornwall border, and halfway between the highlights of Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. It’s run by the five members of the hospitable Ridout family, who'll be happy to share their tips and info on things to do.

On the farm, you won’t even hear a car engine roaring past your pitch – cars are only allowed in the designated parking area outside the paddock to keep things as safe and sedate as possible on site. (Fret not if you’re thinking this means you have to stagger to your berth with armfuls of kit; wheelbarrows and trolleys are provided to cart your stuff/overexcited small children/the dog along to where you’re staying.)

There are picnic tables to park at for your campfire-cooked meals: you can pick up fresh farm and local produce on site when available, as well as wood and fuel for a campfire or barbie. And don’t forget your torch and wellies: this is serious stargazing country because of the low light pollution…cosmic.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

The kitchen facilities are closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Location was great, very peaceful, wigwam pods are very comfortable, had everything we needed, there were items to buy if needed and lots of nearby information leaflets

    Disliked:

No hard standing outside our pod for the fire pit and picnic bench, grass could have been cut for pathways from pod to toilets/kitchen so our feet didn’t get too wet

Very welcoming, dog friendly. Pod lovely, warm, cosy & clean. Nice to see the campfires around the field at night encouraging family engagement. The pod comes with a fridge, toaster, kettle and 3 electrical sockets. Directly outside the pod is a fresh water tap, a picnic table & benches and a firepit with BBQ griddle. There is a large fully equipped kitchen & dining room on site for the campers to share and a shower/toilet block. In the dining room area you can buy (honesty box) milk, sausages, bacon, eggs, hot chocolate, tea, marshmallows, wood, kindling & BBQ coals. Excellent SPAR and other village store 5 minutes away in Dobwalls. Location is very central for day trips around Cornwall & Devon.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but maybe a recommendation to have a few hooks in & outside the pod to hang things like coat, dog-lead, drying towel for dog etc

Clean and peaceful, good facilities, we wanted to 'get away' and it was clean, dry and magical for the children. In a lovely field not too near other Wigwam, everything we wanted for some quality family time, only 15 minutes to Looe, then we drove onto Polperro for some more exploring.

    Disliked:

I thought we would have had a chance to see the farm animals, but didn't like to ask as it wasn't mentioned.

Enclosed field for toddler to play safely. Clean pod, and friendly welcome.
Good location to visit Looe and Polpero. Only 35min drive to Eden project. Very handy to have communal kitchen on site. Toilets and showers basic but clean. Good place for families with young children to go for a camping experience, but with a bit extra to make it that bit easier.

    Disliked:

We only stayed for a few days so may not have explored site enough but didn’t actually see any farm animals on the farm from the field we were in, which our toddler would have loved to see.

Local attractions

The closest village to the farm is Duloe, set among deep valleys between the east and west sections of the River Looe. Popular activities with guests to these parts include seeing the Duloe stone circle, the smallest in Cornwall and dating back to the Bronze Age, and watersports or fishing in the River Looe.

Salmon, brown trout and sea trout can all be landed from both stretches of the Looe, with shoals more fish and fishing in Looe itself. If you don’t want to take one of the numerous sea fishing trips to land your own catch, wait for the boats to come back from a day’s haul and pick up some from them.

From Duloe, it’s four miles north to ancient Liskeard, one of the few towns in Cornwall still to have a weekly livestock market and now with a lively arts scene along its independent shops and restaurants. Coastwards, St Austell and Polperro are both close to hand too: make for Polperro for the Heritage Museum of Smuggling & Fishing to learn about Cornwall’s nefarious past, and St Austell for the China Clay Country Park and the start of the Clay Trail.

To the east, it’s about 16 miles from Penbugle Farm to Plymouth.
