General

  • Peaceful farm between Looe and Liskeard
  • Campfires allowed: buy organic eggs or rare breed meat to sizzle up
  • Picnic tables, communal kitchen, showers and toilets

Those among you who like luxury berths, teeny tiny farm sites, cracking customer service and picking up fresh organic eggs/rare breed meat to sizzle gently over the campfire should flock to Penbugle Farm (‘shepherd’s hill’ in Cornish) for some properly peaceful days.

Even by Cornish standards, the location of Penbugle Farm is one to toot about: between the old market town of Liskeard and the fishing port of Looe; 25 minutes from the Tamar Bridge and the Devon/Cornwall border, and halfway between the highlights of Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. It’s run by the five members of the hospitable Ridout family, who have been living on and farming this land since moving from Dorset in 2005: if this is your first visit to Cornwall, they’ll be happy to share their tips and info on things to do.

On the farm, you won’t even hear a car engine roaring past your pitch – cars are only allowed in the designated parking area outside the paddock to keep things as safe and sedate as possible on site. (Fret not if you’re thinking this means you have to stagger to your berth with armfuls of kit; wheelbarrows and trolleys are provided to cart your stuff/over-excited small children/the dog along to where you’re staying.)

Guests all have access to the pristine Penbugle facilities including toilets, showers, a washing-up area with hot and cold taps, and a cleanly-kept communal kitchen with cooker, microwave, fridge, kettle, pots and pans (recycling facilities are available too).

Outdoors, there are picnic tables to park at and have your campfire-cooked meal; you can pick up fresh farm and local produce on site when available, as well as wood and fuel for a campfire or barbie. And don’t forget your torch and wellies: this is serious stargazing country because of the low light pollution…cosmic.

Excellent site and very good location 12/08/2017

This is an ideal location to visit the attractions of mid- Cornwall - Looe, Polperro, Bodmin and Port Issac. The site was very clean and quiet, and the opportunity to have a campfire was great - wood and firelighters for sale at the site. Small wheel barrows are provided to transport your luggage/camping gear to your pitch as cars remained in the car park. It seems that the owners have thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The communal kitchen and dining cabin was a nice touch, and contained tourist information, local produce e.g. honey, for sale and board games available for evenings when raining. The site manager was very friendly and helpful, and she would try her best to ensure my stay was a happy one. Toilets and showers were very clean. I liked the idea of payment per person rather than per tent, as it made my stay, as a lone traveller, very economical. I enjoyed my stay at this site, and fully recommend it as a place to stay while touring this area of Cornwall.

Quiet, very friendly, the space available on unlimited pitch, personal with owners on site. The site still worked despite awful weather. Quiet, but only 5 minutes from main roads so ideal as a base to see the rest of cornwall. Ideal for what we wanted.

From the manager...

So lovely to read your comments .
As a family run site we do our best to make our guests welcome and help relax while the children run around safely.
Glad you liked the facilities and our farm and local produce on sale.
We'd love to see you back again hopefully without the very heavy rain storm you endured Tuesday night.

Hope to see you again in the future,

Cars not allowed on field so safe for our children, wildlife good and dining area was excellent, generous pitch. The moon was very bright and clear when we stayed and we saw a lot of stars. Owners were very pleasant on arrival but it would have been nice to see them a little more.

    Disliked:

Showers and toilets not very clean although ok in women's (husband said they were very unclean in the men's). Potentially not enough facilities to service a fully booked site. Terrible pot holes on the drive.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments.
We spend a lot time onsite but depending on our guests comings and goings we are not always able to see everyone all of the time.
The toilet facilities are always kept clean but first thing in a morning when it has or is raining there is unfortunately always a wet and dirty floor as expected.
The pot holes are I'm afraid caused by the heavy rain storms that keep occuring and wash away all the stone, this however shouldn't cause a problem if cars are driving carefully and slowly down our one way track. It is something we keep trying to maintain regularly.
It's lovely to hear you felt that your children were safe to play and had plenty of space around your tent, this is why we have a limit on the number of tents allowed at any one time to add to our own accommodation.

Weather was bad when we stayed which made life a bit harder but that's the British summertime for you. Showers need updating

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments.
Our cabins always surprise people with how much space they have inside but these are the original and best in our opinion.
It's a shame this years summer hasn't been so dry but it's not been as bad as 5yrs ago when we first opened.
We are hoping to update the toilet and shower block in the near future as we are aware they need updating.

Lovely peaceful and well looked after location. The bell tent was a fabulous size, and the beds comfy. We made good use of our fire pit. Cars not permitted onsite which was great as it was safe for children and meant the grass looked perfect. Owners were very friendly and helpful, and site has everything you need.
Great location just 10-15 mins from Looe and 10 mins from a large Morrison supermarket for your essentials.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Your comments sum up what we aim to achieve for our guests to enjoy their stay. We maybe don't get it right every time but work hard to get very close especially when the weather goes against us for cutting grass.

The bell tents are a new design for this year and are finding that they are a big hit with everyone.

We hope you may like to stay at penbugle again in the future,

Excellent stay, we really enjoyed ourselves. The owners were really friendly and welcoming, going through everything with us & showing us where things were. Easy to find, just popped "Penbugle Farm" into Google Maps & it took us straight to the gate!
The pods/wigwams are absolutely lush! Nice and clean, everything you would need is in there.
There is picnic bench & a fire pit outside each pod, a nice little touch I think if you want to sit outside and enjoy the scenery and sunshine.
Nice touch having the fire wood/lighters/kindle in the unit opposite, as well as fresh eggs/milk.
We had a few drinks and had music playing - turns out the pods are super sound proof so we didn't have to worry about disturbing anyone else!
Really fantastic weekend, would definitely be recommending to friends and family and will definitely be returning ourselves!

    Disliked:

The toilet facilities weren't the nicest, but this isn't really a grumble or dislike as your outside in a field. Maybe just an extra few sprays of air freshener/fly killer!

From the manager...

Thank you very much for your comments regarding your stay with us at Penbugle.
It's great to hear that you were able to play your music without disturbing other guests and thank you for being considerate as we do like the noise to be at a minimum by 11pm and vise versa quiet before 7.30am.
We are hoping to update our toilet facilities in the very near future but nothing is ever instant.

We hope to see you again in the future,

    Everything was great!
Me and my husband just wanted to get away for the night for our anniversary and take George (our dog) with us. We couldn't of picked of better place for relaxation, peace and tranquility.
The owners were lovely, showed us around the site and lent us a screw in post to keep George safe, necause George doesn't get on with other dogs and one next door, they even offered us another pod away from them, which was brilliant, (thank you.)
Had a BBQ on the fire pit and toasted marshmallows.
The pod was spacious, clean, cosy and comfy. Would definitely stay again and recommend!

Directions

From the west
From Bodmin take the A38 to Liskeard. At the Dobwalls roundabout take the second exit to the village of Dobwalls. At the bottom of the village go across the first mini roundabout and then take the second exit on the next roundabout. You should then pass a Spar shop and primary school on your left-hand side.

Follow the road out of the village past the football ground and over the small railway bridge. Follow the road for approximately 2 miles. You will get to a crossroads with a stone cross on your left; drive on until you go past the first Herodsfoot sign on your right (at a right-hand bend at the bottom of a hill).

At the top of the hill the road levels out and our entrance will be on your left-hand side.

From the east
From Plymouth take the A38 to Liskeard and take the Moorswater Industrial Estate slip road. Turn right at the T-junction into the village of Dobwalls. At the mini roundabout take the first exit left and follow the instructions as from the west, at the Spar shop.

If you use a satnav please do not let it take you to Herodsfoot or St Keyne - it will not be the right place.

Local attractions

Two of Cornwall’s top attractions, the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, are both within half an hour’s drive, but those wanting to stay local or travel by foot/pedal will find a varied load of activities, attractions and landscapes around Penbugle Farm and south-east Cornwall, from rivers to valleys to coastline.

The closest village to the farm is Duloe, set among deep valleys between the east and west sections of the River Looe. Popular activities with guests to these parts include seeing the Duloe stone circle, the smallest in Cornwall and dating back to the Bronze Age, and watersports or fishing in the Looe river.

Salmon, brown trout and sea trout can all be landed from both stretches of the River Looe, with shoals more fish and fishing in Looe itself; if you don’t want to take one of the numerous sea fishing trips to land your own catch, wait for the boats to come back from a day’s haul and pick up some from them.

From Duloe, it’s about four miles north to ancient Liskeard, one of the few towns in Cornwall still to have a weekly livestock market and now with a lively arts scene along its independent shops and restaurants. Coastwards, St Austell and Polperro are both close to hand too, with both top for day trips: Polperro for the Heritage Museum of Smuggling & Fishing to learn about Cornwall’s nefarious past and St Austell for the China Clay Country Park and the start of the Clay Trail.

To the east, it’s about 16 miles from Penbugle Farm to Plymouth for all activities seafarer and landlubber.
