Wood-burning hot tub

  • Luxury glamping site in a flower meadow near Launceston in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to Launceston Steam Railway; half an hour to beaches
  • Well-equipped safari tents with decking, hot tub and communal firepit
Chasing a little bit of luxury for your camping holiday? Look no further than Western Meadows Glamping, tucked away in wildflower meadows by the side of the Kensey river. Each pre-erected safari tent comes with a barbecue area on a covered veranda with – and here’s the real treat – private wood-burning hot tubs for you to enjoy after a day of adventures. So, what do you get along with your cosy rural retreat? Quite a lot, actually. A welcome pack with tea, coffee, and all the basics, a variety of cereal and a little “surprise” for adults. All towels and bedding are provided, along with basic cleaning products like dish cloths and scourers. Kids are welcome on site too, with a volleyball net, swings and climbing frame for them to play safely on. Three communal firepit areas have river views and seating, so you can gather round in the evening to chat with fellow guests. Not feeling sociable? Simply retreat back to your own veranda. Tents are powered by mains electricity, with hot and cold water in the kitchens and bathrooms (which have double-size showers, flush loos and basins) and the mains water is soft and good to drink. Kindling for the firepits is available for free, and the owners also supply two large tubs of wood for the range cooker and hot tubs per week. Any further tubs are chargeable. Please leave cars (a maximum of two per tent) in the park at the field entrance, which is on hard-standing slate chippings; pull in facing the river near to the woodshed.

What customers say

Western Meadows offers a peaceful countryside retreat with well-equipped and comfortable glamping accommodations, including safari tents and lodges. Guests consistently praise the friendly and attentive hosts, Margaret and Colin, who provide welcome cream teas. The hot tubs are a popular feature, as are the tranquil surroundings and opportunities for outdoor activities. While generally immaculate and highly recommended for a relaxing break, one reviewer experienced communication issues regarding the wood-burning stove. The narrow access lane is noted.

Safari tent

Liked Western Meadows is set in very rural beautiful countryside. The area is peaceful and there is space for children to have freedom to play. The tents are fitted to a really high standard and very comfortable. The hot tub was fabulous after a busy day. We loved the local wildlife. Plenty to do for days out. We did not want to leave and would definitely book again. Thank you to our hosts Margaret and Colin.

Safari tent

Liked What a relaxing couple of days! We stayed with our teen daughters and their friends. Everyone had enough space to chill out. The safari tent, comfy beds, hot tub and quiet location were a hit. We even enjoyed trying to play a bit of volley ball.
It was a refreshing change to be in nature without any TV or WiFi. Hopefully, we will be back in the summer. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Safari tent

Liked We had a great stay at Western Meadows. The tent was lovely and well kitted out with everything we needed and the hot tub was a real treat. The site itself is surrounded by trees which made it feel very tranquil and has a play area for the kids which was great. We hope to be back next year.

Disliked The lane leading to the site is quite narrow but it is worth it when you get there.

Local attractions

Wild bird sightings are common around the site; buzzards, woodpeckers and sometimes – if you’re really quiet – kingfishers by the river. You can also fish for trout from the bridge – the river is fenced off, but access is at your own risk. There’s almost no light pollution either, so the stars in the night sky are very bright. Launceston Steam Railway (10 minutes’ drive) runs daily during the holiday season, and it’s well worth exploring Launceston Castle’s hilltop ruins while you’re in town. Railway buffs might also enjoy the heritage trains on Bodmin and Wenford Railway (30 minutes). The kids will nag to go to the beach, and there are several options for you. Widemouth Bay has long sandy beaches, and when the tide is out, Crakington Haven (both 30 minutes) is a treasure trove of rock pools and paddling. Both beaches are good for surfing, with life guards in attendance. Further afield are the tropical gardens and desert regions of the Eden Project (45 minutes) and the gorgeous, romantic Lost Gardens of Heligan (an hour).
