Western Meadows Glamping: View from the hillside

General

  • Luxury glamping site in a flower meadow near Launceston in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to Launceston Steam Railway; half an hour to beaches
  • Well-equipped safari tents with decking, hot tub and communal firepit

Chasing a little bit of luxury for your camping holiday? Look no further than Western Meadows Glamping, tucked away in wildflower meadows by the side of the Kensey river. Each pre-erected safari tent comes with a barbecue area on a covered veranda with – and here’s the real treat – private wood-burning hot tubs for you to enjoy after a day of adventures.

So, what do you get along with your cosy rural retreat? Quite a lot, actually. A welcome pack with tea, coffee, and all the basics, a variety of cereal and a little “surprise” for adults. All towels and bedding are provided, along with basic cleaning products like dish cloths and scourers.

Kids are welcome on site too, with a trampoline, swings and climbing frame for them to play safely on. Three communal firepit areas have river views and seating, so you can gather round in the evening to chat with fellow guests. Not feeling sociable? Simply retreat back to your own veranda.

Tents are powered by mains electricity, with hot and cold water in the kitchens and bathrooms (which have double-size showers, flush loos and basins) and the mains water is soft and good to drink.

Kindling for the firepits is available for free, and the owners also supply two large tubs of wood for the range cooker and hot tubs per week. Any further tubs are chargeable. Please leave cars (a maximum of two per tent) in the park at the field entrance, which is on hard-standing slate chippings; pull in facing the river near to the woodshed.

Western Meadows is fantastic. The safari tent is very well equipped with everything you need for a fab stay.

Margaret and Colin are great hosts and go above and beyond for their guests, the hot tub had already been lit prior to our arrival so it was ready to use - this is an exception as all places we have stayed have not done this; it was very appreciated. Freshly baked scones and a very good bottle of wine too! Hot tub and wood supplies were checked daily and refreshed.

The accommodation was spotless with fantastic comfy beds, lovely bedding and plenty of fluffy towels.

A lot of care, love and attention to detail has been given by Margaret and Colin and it shows. Can’t speak highly enough of it!

We had a fabulous holiday. We really liked being welcomed in person by owners. The Safari tent was lovely and clean, beautiful bedding and plenty of hot water when needed. Very nice shower facilities and toilet.
The hot tub was great to come back to after being out all day. I especially liked the tranquil surroundings and watching the sun go down with a glass of wine on the veranda.
The family would be very happy to go back again, and we would recommend this site to others.

Outstanding stay hosted by a friendly couple! They were very helpful and provided us with plenty of information on local activates to keep us going for days. The location is also great, about a half an hour drive away from most of the available attractions. There were even freshly baked Cornish scones upon arrival - very thoughtful.
The tent itself is thought out amazingly, it's equipped with absolutely everything you'd need during your stay and is just perfect for the whole family. Regardless of the weather a BBQ on the tents balcony was always on the cards! The hot tub was simply the icing on the cake, especially at night with the stars glowing above.
We highly recommend everyone to stay at Western Meadows.

The tents were brilliant. We loved the fact that we were completely self contained with our own bathroom and kitchen. The shower was surprisingly good and the range cooker was ideal to keep us warm on some of the cooler nights.

We loved sitting in the hot tub at night listening to the river and owls whilst looking at the stars.

The gas barbecue was also great because we could cook and sit together on the veranda and take in the view of the valley and meadow.

Love how clean and well thought of Western Meadows is. Everything was great from the start - the meet up and quick tour of the area with Margaret and Colin, the welcome package which we enjoyed so much (oh those scones were so yummy! And the bread and jam and cheese and wine! 🤤😋), the level of cleanliness in the safari tent that was marvelous, Colin and Margaret’s generosity on the wood (that gets topped up daily), the crockery and cooking utensils that are made ready for you to use, the BBQ in the patio and the torches that were so helpful when moving about outside the kitchen and the tent. Oh it’s difficult to stop! In retrospect, I wonder if M & C have put themselves in the tent for days and nights to personally test it, to make sure everything needed is provided for anyone or everyone who stays in. 🤔😍 No, I am not going to forget mentioning the aga burner and the hot tub! They were total bonuses and never was there a night we missed making fire in the aga, enjoying its warmth whilst we lounge on the sofa looking at brochures M & C has provided, thinking of more adventures to be had… never was there a night we missed getting into the hot tub under the starry nights (okay, one time it was cloudy - 😬☺️). Every single thing in this place is just wonderful! To top it all off, the location is a perfect base for when you want to go around any part of Cornwall - it’s simply located central and it was so easy for us to move around any direction, be it north, south, east, west. It’s crazy! Thank you so much Margaret and Colin for making the first leg of our Cornish holiday extraordinary and breathtaking. It is so memorable I think it’s giving me sepanx from your place and Cornwall. We can’t wait to be back! Please stay safe. - Simon and Marie Xx

Not a single thing, well except having to leave and be away from Western Meadows and Cornwall (why aren’t there any similar beaches and coastal walks like St. Agnes’ up in the north? - lol).

The stove kept it lovely & warm when the evenings came cold. Plenty of room for a family of 4. The hosts were very helpful ensuring we had everything we needed. Beautiful location & kids loved the hot tub, trampoline & swings. Idyllic.

Local attractions

Wild bird sightings are common around the site; buzzards, woodpeckers and sometimes – if you’re really quiet – kingfishers by the river. You can also fish for trout from the bridge – the river is fenced off, but access is at your own risk. There’s almost no light pollution either, so the stars in the night sky are very bright.

Launceston Steam Railway (10 minutes’ drive) runs daily during the holiday season, and it’s well worth exploring Launceston Castle’s hilltop ruins while you’re in town. Railway buffs might also enjoy the heritage trains on Bodmin and Wenford Railway (30 minutes).

The kids will nag to go to the beach, and there are several options for you. Widemouth Bay has long sandy beaches, and when the tide is out, Crakington Haven (both 30 minutes) is a treasure trove of rock pools and paddling. Both beaches are good for surfing, with life guards in attendance.

Further afield are the tropical gardens and desert regions of the Eden Project (45 minutes) and the gorgeous, romantic Lost Gardens of Heligan (an hour).

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (15.7 miles)
  • National Marine Aquarium (22.4 miles)
  • Rock Beach (23.7 miles)
