Peaceful camping

  • Wild-style camping at a scenic 13-acre site on Bodmin Moor
  • A five-minute drive from Jamaica Inn, 15 minutes from Launceston
  • Simple facilities on site, plus stargazing and wild deer spotting
Well, this is a special spot – on private land within private land, and open to overnight guests for the first time. West Tober is a slice of wild land within the untamed scenery of Bodmin Moor, part of the spectacular Cornwall National Landscape, and a wonderful place to settle for a bit of wild-style camping. There are toilets and showers available, but otherwise this site has been left pretty much in its natural state. Guests are free to wander around the 13 acres (centred around a traditional Cornish longhouse dating back several centuries) to find a pitch they like the look of. Pretty much any spot is good though – the wild surroundings are peaceful and spectacularly scenic, especially at sunset. Garrow Tor and Brown Willy form the backdrop for much of the site, and also make a rather lovely view for a barbecue in the evening. As this is a remote area you're likely to see some splendid starry skies too; that true darkness does mean that it's a very good idea to bring a torch to find your way after dark. And you may like to pack binoculars too – wild red deer are often spotted roaming in surrounding fields. Peaceful and secluded this place may be, but it's also easy to access from the A30, about 15 minutes' drive from Launceston. And it's also a handy location for all sorts of Bodmin outings – perhaps to historic spots like King Arthur's Hall and Trippet Stone Circle, natural features like Golitha Falls and Rough Tor or swimming spots like Dozmary Pool. And of course you'll have to stop in for a drink or meal at Jamaica Inn, made famous by Daphne Du Maurier’s novel and only a mile from the site.
