Pattacott Farm: Bell tent

General

  • Friendly family-run farm site 20 minutes' drive from Launceston
  • A 15-minute drive from the coast path and Crackington Haven beach
  • Buy fresh eggs and homemade sausages and burgers on site

Farm life… it’s all pony rides, fresh eggs and homemade sausages isn’t it? Well, it is at Pattacott Farm, a friendly family park in Cornwall, 20 minutes’ drive from Launceston.

This is very much an active working farm, keeping an assorted menagerie of rare-breed sheep and pigs, a herd of cattle and free-roaming chickens in the grounds. A couple of ponies also live on site, and the folk that run the place are happy to arrange local lead rein rides for nippers who’d like to have a taster of riding during their stay.

The collection of animals isn’t just for show, of course – they contribute to the range of tasty items available to buy, including eggs for your brekkie and homemade sausages or burgers for your barbecue (which you could serve up in homemade bread from the farm too).

You might fancy a crack at building a campfire as well, and you’re welcome to do so for flame-grilled dinners or to keep you toasty as you gaze up into the starry skies (the heavens often glitter overhead out here as the area is far away from light pollution).

If you’re not planning to live on a diet of burgers alone, extra supplies can be sourced at the shop four miles away or in the supermarkets of Launceston and Bude (20 minutes).

Once essentials are sorted, it’s time to plan for your activities: keep it local with a good rural ramble on the network of footpaths that runs nearby or make the 15-minute jaunt to the coast for more walks, beach days, surfing and legend-learning at Tintagel Castle (25 minutes).

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Large well trimmed field, plenty of space. Friendly chatty hosts that showed us round the farm and provided local produce and logs to our tent when we needed. The facilities are basic, but clean and functional, water was hot after running it for a few seconds.
For us, the best part was the animals. We only stayed a weekend but our boys both got a pony ride, the trio of geese were regular visitors to our field and we met friendly dogs, cats and muscovy ducks. The pigs and sheep were introduced as part of the pony ride.
Overall we really enjoyed it, and for the price you will struggle to improve on sues lovely site.

    Disliked:

Bumpy track leading to site, sheep a little noisy during our first night due to needing to be sheared.(it is a working farm so this wasn't entirely unexpected and we could have moved further from the barn if we had needed to. )

    Open space

    Disliked:

Lack of structure, no obvious places to set up camp, cold water in showers and a dog that barked constantly all night. We left after 2 nights and expressed our reasons for leaving with no offer on reduction on price for the poor 2 nights sleep we had. We had a terrible time yet the owner thought it was appropriate to say we need to give the milk bottle back or pay extra for it.

We lived next to a working farm so this didn't worry us, but its a very run down working farm.

Don't be fooled by the idea of 'seeing the animals' all we saw was chickens through a hole in a wall and a pony that was brought into the field. My 3 year old was very disappointed

From the manager...

This is ridiculous . The milk bottles are deposit bottles that I pay and trust the campers to return or purchase . They are not my bottles .
The showers are absolutely not cold ever and we get comments always about how lovely they are . Really warm with a good pressure.
These people had booked for 10 days and so I had planned a tour of the animals but they left before we could do It . We can’t have farm animals all over the camp site !! Are they mad . They have to be a separate area from the visitors . There is a public footpath through the farm that they could have walked from the moment that they arrived . These people were parked next to a family who were having a fabulous time and had been with us for a week . The dog barking was a neighbours dog and funnily enough she moved house the day after these people left. I offered to give the little girl a pony ride but they declined and left . This is the first complaint that we have had about unmarked pitches this is the charm of it for most people.
We felt that what ever we had done for these people they wouldn’t have been satisfied . They appeared very anxious .

Sue and Kevin and the farm. Beautiful location with stunning views. Fresh produce available from the farm. The kids were spoilt with tours and chance to help with horses etc. So much more than a camping site. Came away feeling like we had made friends with both Kevin and Sue. Attentive to the needs of visitors. Visitors do need to remember it is a working farm and that’s part of the charm.

Big open spaces. Pitch anywhere we like.
Open fires allowed and wood for sale.
It’s a shame that I have so many dislikes as the site is generally a nice field with lots of level ground.

    Disliked:

The owners seem a bit new to it all.
We were lured by the farm experience. I was looking forwards to the kids seeing the animals. It is advertised as a farm campsite and it is a farm but not really a farm that the kids can see the animals.
The advertised farm made burgers and sausages are available if you can locate the owners. Or if they rock up at your tent at 10 in the evening on their quad bike or tractor, waking the children and obviously after having had a few drinks..
You get what you pay for, it was only £25 a night but we won’t come again. The owners should make them selves available rather than careering around at night when the children are trying to sleep... really spoiled it for us unfortunately.
Toilets had long queues and were very busy. Not particularly clean. The washing up area (one sink) has an overspill so I have no idea what ends upon the floor.

From the manager...

We are glad that this family like our site . There is only two of us running a working farm and a campsite and bank holidays attract a lot of people .
We probably shouldn’t have driven round late seeing people after a long day on the farm and the camp site but we always try to see everyone to make sure that they are happy and to see if they need anything . This is clearly a mistake. Most people think it’s great but for us it’s absolutely exhausting. This is a new site and so we have decided following this review that clearly our efforts to make it personal and caring are foolish and we apologise for disturbing the children. Most visitors say that they never see the camp site owners and that they enjoy our interaction but quite frankly we can see that visiting folk in the evenings is irritating for them and so from now on we won’t bother .
Thank you for pointing this out to us . We appreciate your comments and we will stay in and relax in the evenings in front of the TV from now on allowing campers to do their own thing . Thanks again for your feed back . We get to sit down !!

    Disliked:

Nothing, I have noticed some negative comments and would just say you have two people who really care about the people staying with them. It’s an old school farm and that’s the charm of you want everything perfect and manicured then go somewhere with no character, if you want site which is clean tidy and has the warmth of a real multigenerational Cornish farm well this is it. The facility’s are basic but clean and well kept, Kevin and Sue have plans to improve this but need to ensure they keep the charm.

Absolutely loved this place, it was just what we wanted! Spacious field for privacy so people weren’t camping right next to each other, clean toilets, warm shower and even saw geese roaming around. The staff were amazing and even came round on an evening to see if we needed more logs for our fire.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but maybe a suggestion, there are 2 shower rooms and within the rooms are 2 showers and a toilet. With covid restrictions in place only 1 household/bubble are allowed in the shower room at a time. Sometimes it is difficult to tell whether the rooms are vacant or not so to avoid any awkward situations/ walking in on people place a a sign on the door for users to turn over when in use or not.
I know the individual showers and toilets have locks on them but this stops other people coming in the room if you’re using the shower.

A difficult one to summarise02/06/2021

If you take this site for what it is, it is truely excellent, both for location and value for money, there are wide open spaces, the plots are massive and you can choose your location, it is only 20min from bude and 20min from Boscastle, there are local facilities if you drive, and the owners are lovely and very attentive.

    Disliked:

The track, approx 500 yards leading up to the site is awful, bumpy would be an understatement and if you meet another car and trailer in the opposite direction is an absolute nightmare, the new DIY toilet block is a disgrace, and if you are just a couple you may make do, but there is no lock on the inside and the clear glass means anyone can look in, there is no room in the shower cubicles to change, it would have been better as two large areas with toilet and one shower in each and given plenty of space rather than doubling the showers and partition walls, we were lured by the working farm and a promise to see and stroke the animals but this never materialised, the evening visits by your host on a tracker by your tent or a 4*4 woke the kids up at 9.30 each night! But apart from this it was a pleasant stay as I said if you take it for what it is a new site with inexperienced hosts then I’m sure it will get better, but it’s not for everyone! But take a mop to clean the showers, our biggest concern was the mess and lack of cleaning especially with COVID.

From the manager...

Dear Peter ,
You came on a bank holiday .!!! If you want to see the animals then come another time .!!
We give guided tours and attend to folks needs . A week later we just have a handful of people . This is a family home and the two of us do it all .
Today I was flagged down by a man telling me that his son was amazed by how clean and lovely our showers etc are how kind we are .
We have already decided to leave campers Tonit in future and not come round regardless to see if everyone is ok .
Thank you for pointing out irritating we are . We will sit down and relax in front of the TV in future .
Quite frankly I would rather shut this site and do what I am best at which is not looking annoying visitors .!

Lack of toilets/showers. Need many more for the amount of people

From the manager...

We are delighted that this family liked our location and we did our best on a frantic weekend to welcome everyone . We are a new site that set up during lock down and we are aware that on bank holidays we don’t really have enough loos . We have two more loos to install and we plan some composting loos too to take the pressure off bank holidays. The rest of the time it’s always fine . We expected comments like this over the bank holiday.
We already have an additional shower room that was sadly shut due to the shower cabinet being damaged by visitors previously. Hope that this family can visit again when not so many visitors around .
