Chelsfield Farm: Views from the pitches

General

  • Rural Cornish farm with on-site fishing
  • A 20-minute drive from Bude
  • Farm shop on site, plus bar/restaurant with takeaway options

Cornwall, fishing, fab views, lip-smacking farm produce and pasties made to order… 'tis no wonder that guests wax lyrical about Chelsfield Farm, about 20 minutes from the beaches and watery activities of splendid Bude.

Set on a smallholding within 17 acres deep in rural Cornwall, this family farm comes with spectacular views towards Dartmoor, immaculate amenities, and a handsomely set fishing lake at which to land carp and tench for a small fee. (Not a fishing fan? Bring a book and a picnic to the lakeside instead.)

Resident horses Dolly and Connie are part of the farm menagerie, along with a flock of sheep, free-range chickens, turkeys, geese and guinea fowl, all on a wide open green space with large, level and well-drained pitches and plenty of room for kids to play (send them to find the tree swing and you'll likely not see them for hours). Amenities are well looked after and include a toilet and shower block with free electric showers, a washing-up sink, several water taps and a chemical waste point.

Owners Marianne and Alan strongly encourage barbecues here, so it's just as well that Chelsfield also comes with a smashing farm shop, stocked with first-rate produce including locally farmed meat, fresh free-range eggs and other bits and pieces to sizzle up on the site barbie while looking across to Dartmoor. A bar is to hand for drinks afterwards.

If you'd rather not cook, the farm's restaurant/takeaway serves breakfast baps, burgers and hot dogs, as well as sandwiches, pies and pasties all made to highly tasty order.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The grocery shop is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Facilities/activities including fishing are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Reception is unmanned after 5:30 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

All pets must be wormed.

It was great to have a bar on site which also served food. Staff helpful and friendly. Good location for visiting Cornwall and North Devon. Spacious flat pitches on the electric field.

    Disliked:

The toilet block next to the electric field needed updating and the showers were broken so I used the ones in the new block in the lower field. Unfortunately fresh meat wasn’t available in the farm shop which had been advertised on the website.

Upon arrival we was warmly welcomed and shown to our pitch. The whole atmosphere of the site was warm, relaxed and very friendly. The drive to the site was stunning and once we arrived the views were breathtaking. We decided to stay on site for the first night as we had travelled from Leeds. We drank and ate in the site bar. The food was incredible we had a full rack of ribs and they were just out of this world! The owners do all the cooking and take care of the whole site on a day to day basis and work really hard to keep it in top order! (Didn’t go unnoticed) we met some lovely people on the site and spent a lot of time exploring Cornwall, however, every evening when we returned, no matter what time it was, there was always a friendly face to welcome us back. We are booking to stay here again for next year and will take another family with us as we know they will love it as much as we did. We took a 15 year old and a 7 year old and not once were either of them bored. We absolutely loved staying here, and for the price we paid, could not ask for more. Great week with great people and to top it off, we decided to stay an extra night! You will love this place, highly recommended.

We normally try to pitch very close to the sea, but this year, with demand so high, our options were limited. We took a punt and booked at Chelsfield farm - we are so glad we did.

The site is very easy to find and ideally located within 5mins of the A39. Bude, Widemouth, and Crackington, are within easy reach. Our pitch was incredibly spacious, well drained and well groomed. The brand new shower and toilet block were spotlessly clean and the showers were nice and hot.

Surrounding the pitch was woodland, grazing sheep, and views into the distant hills. It was well sheltered from the wind.

At the entrance to the site is the wonderful "Stumble Inn" which houses a bar, restaurant with inside and outside seating, and shop for essentials.

The restaurant is outstanding. All food is cooked fresh using genuinely local ingredients, with the meats being the star of the show. The staff were lovely and attentive. However, we found the real jewel in the freezers which contain a wide selection of vacuum packed meats at fantastic prices. Given that you are permitted to have BBQ and fires on your pitch, we decided to buy four steaks and a pack of sausages with our morning coffee. We let them defrost in the car while we went out for the day. I bbq'd them in the evening - best steaks we've had in a very very long time, and sausages were crazy good.

Due to the location (away from Street lights), we then day under stars. Magnificent.

The owners Alan and Marianne are special people. They made every effort to look after us during our stay, and really care about their site and the well-being of their patrons.

If you're coming to North Cornwall and want a trouble-free, professionally run, and safe base for your trip, look no further. Chelsfield is head and shoulders above anywhere we've stayed locally.

Local attractions

North Cornwall, north Devon and Dartmoor are all easily reachable from Chelsfield Farm, for days around coast and countryside, wildlife watching and walking, cantering around on horseback and fishing via shore and river. Tintagel Castle, the Crealy Great Adventure Park and other top Cornish family spots are within a short drive.

Most folk know nearby Bude for its surf, but you'll find a fair bit to do around town and out of the water too, from cantering on its coastline to potters around its old harbour or letting the kids loose at the town's six-storey indoor play centre.

The spectacular South West Coast Path runs from Bude to Crackington Haven and from there onto Boscastle and Tintagel, or you could hike in the other direction 15 miles to Hartford Quay via the Hartford Peninsula and then – if you dare – another 10 miles onto the tiny cobbled town of north Devon's Clovelly.

Other activities all around include sea fishing, clay pigeon shooting, birdwatching, and spotting local wildlife like red deer, roe deer, foxes, badgers, frogs, newts, toads, squirrels and hedgehogs: it's very much recommended that you bring your paintbox and your camera…
