General

  • Rural Cornish farm with on-site fishing
  • A 20-minute drive from Bude
  • Farm shop, takeaway and site barbecue

Cornwall, fishing, fab views, lip-smacking farm produce and pasties made to order… tis no wonder that guests wax lyrical about Chelsfield Farm, about 20 minutes from the beaches and watery activities of splendid Bude.

Set on a smallholding within 17 acres deep in rural Cornwall, this family farm comes with spectacular views towards Dartmoor, immaculate amenities, and a handsomely set fishing lake at which to land carp and tench for a small fee. (Not a fishing fan? Bring a book and a picnic to the lakeside instead.)

Resident horses Dolly and Connie are part of the farm menagerie, along with a flock of sheep, free range chickens, turkeys, geese and guinea fowl, all on a wide open green space with large, level and well-drained pitches and plenty of room for kids to play (send them to find the tree swing and you'll likely not see them for hours). Amenities are well looked after and include a toilet and shower block with free electric showers, a washing-up sink, several water taps and a chemical waste point.

Owners Marianne and Alan strongly encourage barbecues here, so it's just as well that Chelsfield also comes with a smashing farm shop, stocked with first-rate produce including locally farmed meat, fresh free range eggs and other bits and pieces to sizzle up on the site barbie while looking across to Dartmoor.

If you'd rather not cook, the farm takeaway serves breakfast baps, burgers and hot dogs, as well as sandwiches, pies and pasties all made to highly tasty order.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

What a lovely couple who will go over and above to make your stay memorable. The site is very picturesque and great for kids with all the animals. The farm shop is stocked with all your basics and anything they haven't got they will go get it for you. I must say try there onsite butchered meats and sausages, they are to die for !! The weather was wet when we went but both Marianne and Alan did all to ease the mud and was always at hand to help you. I know a guest next to us left early saying they had leaked sewerage in there tent was a total lie as we didn't and I looked at their site and smelt nothing so don't always go by bad reviews and you wouldn't find a better rural site than Chelmsfield Farm and yes we will be returning.

Lovely, friendly, helpful couple. Nice site and kept as clean as they could with the terrible rain we had during our stay. Weather didn't spoil it, we still had a fab time! Lots of outdoor space to play in for the kids. Good facilities. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.

Lovely place in a really good central location - we drove to Tintagel, Bude and a couple of beaches on different days. The showers are wonderful and one shower block is unisex so makes it easier if you have very small children (can team up for wash time, we were travelling with a one year old).
It's a working farm and great fun for kids. There are lots of animals to discover and a perfect tree for climbing right in the centre of one of the camping fields.
We had some trouble as the rain was flooding our camp (it had been raining for weeks) and they offered to move us to a different field. They also helped to jump start our camper van after we stupidly drained the battery with a portable fridge. I can't fault the hosts at all :) We will be revisiting in the future!

The soil pipe on the new fitted toilet block leaking past our tent 2 feet away like a stream the smell was discusting

From the manager...

Thankyou for your review but as you already know (as i reassured you before you left) the relentless rain and sun combination creates a smell benneath a ground sheet and sadly mud is too a result of the same.

We had a disastrous start to our camping adventure. The air tent we tried to pitch up sprung leaks in several places and we were left unable to use it. But for the kindness and incredibly helpful attitude of the campsite owners, we wouldn't have had a memorable camping holiday. The owners kindly offered one of their own tents that we ended up using for the full duration of our holiday! We have also got to immensely thank 2 fellow campers who helped us set up the tent. Chelsfield Farm is a relaxed and beautiful setting for family camping - it being a working farm with a nice farm shop. We had a fantastic time relaxing, playing games, going out on walks from the farm. We also loved the fact that Bude and other lovely coastal attractions were only a short drive away. We will come back again someday!

Local attractions

North Cornwall, north Devon and Dartmoor are all easily reachable from Chelsfield Farm, for days around coast and countryside, wildlife watching and walking, cantering around on horseback and fishing via shore and river. Tintagel Castle, the Crealy Great Adventure Park and other top Cornish family spots are within a short drive.

Most folk know nearby Bude for its surf, but you'll find a fair bit to do around town and out of the water too, from cantering on its coastline to potters around its old harbour or letting the kids loose at the town's six-storey indoor play centre.

The spectacular South West Coast Path runs from Bude to Crackington Haven and from there onto Boscastle and Tintagel, or you could hike in the other direction 15 miles to Hartford Quay via the Hartford Peninsula and then – if you dare – another ten miles onto the tiny cobbled town of north Devon's Clovelly.

Other activities all around include sea fishing, clay pigeon shooting, birdwatching, and spotting local wildlife like red deer, roe deer, foxes, badgers, frogs, newts, toads, squirrels and hedgehogs: it's very much recommended that you bring your paintbox and your camera...

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (14.2 miles)
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (20.3 miles)
  • Rock Beach (24.2 miles)
