Wheal Vreagh Farm: Stargazey

General

  • Peaceful Cornish site 10 minutes’ drive from scenic sandy beaches
  • A 10-minute drive from Helston and 25 minutes from Penzance
  • Famed Praa Sands and Flambards theme park within 15 minutes

Do your family’s demands for hols hinge on proximity to shopping towns, whizzing rides and pristine beaches? Tick everyone’s boxes with a visit to Wheal Vreagh Farm, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Helston.

The site is about 15 minutes from the edge of the scenic Lizard peninsula, putting plenty of stellar beach options including Praa Sands and Porthleven within easy reach. Porthleven is the nearer of the two, less than 10 minutes away, and is a top spot for paddleboarding and sea kayaking; further afield, sandy stretches at Polurrian and Mullion (both 25 minutes) have fishing and watersports, Porthkerris is 35 minutes away for diving and shipwreck scouting, and Newquay and Sennen Cove are about 45 minutes from base if surfing appeals.

For salt-free hours, make a high-octane day of it on the rides and coasters at Flambards Theme Park (10 minutes from the site), or opt for a day wandering the small shops and pretty streets of Helston, home to the famed Furry Dance.

After busy days, make a welcome return to the peaceful site, where unwinding and switching off is a simple matter of grilling up dinner on the barbie and basking in the quiet of the green and spacious grassy fields. Best of all? A washing-up area and launderette on-site mean there’s no need to spend hols dreading the pile of work that will await upon your return home…

Very warm welcome from the owners. They Showed us to our pitch and advised on places to visit . Modern toilets and showers which were always kept very clean . The tent pitches are huge and even have enough room for a picnic table and flower bed walls which is a lovely personal touch ! Very quiet and clean site which is perfect for camping would definitely recommend!!

    Disliked:

Perhaps a little shop which sells basic food items as not within walking distance of a shop . Not a problem as long as you are organised and don’t run out of essentials !

What can I say we were greeted by the most lovely couple who owned the campsite, showed us our pitch and chatted about everything local , where we could visit what were the highlights etc,
The campsite is just what we wanted , secluded green and in deepest darkest Cornwall to show the kids another life away from spending stupid amounts of money in theme parks etc. We met people who go back every year and we can all see why its just the right size and the toilet and showers were of an amazingly high standard which when you are trying to get your kids away from Ibiza and show them the UK - amazing toilets and showers are a very very important thing to walk into.
This was a first for us we had our 18 year old, 13 year old and our 3 year old and we had a fantastic time and actually got the playing cards out and connected again. Huge thanks to the owners for their attentiveness on this peaceful and beautiful campsite, we will definitely be back and definitely be recommending to anyone who asks

Location was great, close to several towns and beaches to explore.
Pitch sizes were large lots of space to play.
Loved the picnic benches on every pitch very handy!
    Owner seemed friendly.
Facilities were clean, Wash up room clean and tidy (until other campers chose not to wipe up after themselves)

    Disliked:

Shower doesn't stay on long enough and although they were lovely and hot perhaps too hot for the children.
Useful fridge freezer BUT it was filthy inside and all the lights were flashing so assuming not running correctly.
There is WiFi but it's poor quality.

Lovely welcome. A spacious and very quiet campsite. Wide and flat pitch. Picnic bench table included. Excellent facilities. Perfect base to adventure a wonderful coastline. 10 min drive to south coast, 20 min drive to north coast (st. Ives bay).

    Disliked:

VERY MINOR… the push button showers that lasted a few seconds. Perhaps understandable depending on prior experience of the owners. That said the water was hot and shower refreshing!

Local attractions

A 10-minute drive from the coast and the South West Coast Path, the site is well placed for scenic rambles along wild Cornish coastline. Particularly spectacular views are to be had in and around Marazion, where a glance seaward casts eyes on the stunning St Michael’s Mount (reachable at low tide along a causeway from the mainland).

That’s far from the only must-visit coastal spot hereabouts either: it’s a 45-minute drive to Land’s End, England’s most westerly point, for plenty of photo opps and a Cornish cream tea – that’s jam, then cream, people – before heading homeward.

Keen historians may be drawn to the grandiosity of the ruined but sprawling Godolphin House and Gardens, five minutes away, while budding horticulturists should smell the roses at Glendurgan and Trebah gardens (35 minutes), Trewithian Gardens and the Eden Project (both about an hour).

Town time can be spent wandering cobbled streets in pretty St Ives, exploring gardens, galleries and museums in Penzance (and boat trips to the Scilly Isles), or clambering around Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle in Falmouth, all within about half an hour of the site.

Must see

  • Flambards (3.7 miles)
  • National Seal Sanctuary (5.6 miles)
  • St Michael's Mount (6.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Godolphin (1.4 miles)
  • Penrose Estate: Gunwalloe and Loe Pool (3.2 miles)
