Skyburriowe Farm House: View of the field

General

  • Clean, spacious and well-maintained site on a working dairy farm
  • Four miles from Helston with easy access to the Lizard Peninsula
  • Friendly helpful owners; wildlife haven, and homemade cake

Clean, quiet and in a lovely location on a dairy farm close to the Cornish coast are the boxes firmly ticked for Skyburriowe Farm House, a small and very friendly farm site at Garras on the knockout Lizard Peninsula.

Show up here in spring for expanses of bluebells as well as hedgerows filled with common and not so common flowers; in autumn for clifftop walks followed by forays to the local restaurants and pubs (pasties are very warming), and in summer for boat trips, fishing, surfing and looking out for migrating basking sharks and orcas: the nearest beach is only a couple of miles away.

The well-spaced site at Skyburriowe Farm is in a lawned meadow bordered by a line of trees home to a variety of local wildlife, and has free wifi, chemical disposal and amenities (toilets and showers, separate family/disabled room, laundry sinks and a utility room with fridge, freezer and sinks) kept to high standards by owners Vivian and Brenda.

Barbecues are allowed on site, and a food shop, pub and restaurant are within a couple of miles. Whichever foodie option you pick, remember to leave room for some homemade cake, made freshly on site for guests' convenience… you'll probably want to tick that box too.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The shower facilities are closed. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

The toilet facilities are closed. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

We'd planned this break early in the year before Covid-19 happened as we'd already decided where we wanted to go this summer. I found this site early on in my search on Pitchup and although I checked other options I kept coming back to it as it looked ideal so we booked.

Then Covid happened and we had no idea if we'd be able to go away at all. Luckily the restrictions were lifted in time and we were able to travel, the owner had called up previously to say they wouldn't be opening the toilets / showers but as we have a caravan we could manage without.

Excellent communication by the owners regarding the Covid precautions and as we thought we'd be arriving when they would be out some direction was given as to where to pitch. As it was we arrived just a little earlier than planned and just prior to the owner going out so he was able to get us sorted with our pitch.

Everything perfect after that, peaceful site, plenty of space due to reduced bookings, kids made some friends, lots of friendly folk on the site, nice to hear the owls and other wildlife in the evening and plenty of walking options straight from the site. Ideally placed for all the attractions the Lizard has to offer, many beautiful beaches around and lots to see and do. We visited the Eden Project, Minack, Lands End and Roskillys (great pizza and ice cream).

Didn't want to come home and I'm sure we'll be back here at some point in the future.

The location - great for exploring Lizard Peninsula and Penwith Peninsula. Easy access to everywhere, but felt like we were in the middle of nowhere.
The campsite - quiet (we stayed here outside school holidays!), well-kept, fabulous toilet & shower block.
Owners obviously work hard to keep the place this lovely!
Listening to the owls calling to each other in the trees around the campsite at night was just wonderful!

Large flat pitches although there are sloping areas in some places. spotless toilets, big showers with space to put your clothes but they can be busy at times. quiet rural site. It is a working farm so expect to hear noise from the cows and the crows in the trees. It’s also near a naval air base so there is noise from planes and helicopters. Apart from one evening it was during the day and it didn’t bother us at all. The family who run the site are very friendly and easy to get hold of if you have any problems. There isn’t a play area for children but lots of space for them to run around safely. The WiFi is very hit and miss but it worked well in that my device reliant children played with the games we’d taken and explored the outdoors. We had a lovely week here and would definitely visit again

Local attractions

To the beach first – this is the Lizard Peninsula after all, and highly scenic sands and cliffs are within easy reach including the very special Kennack Sands four and a half miles from base.

The Lizard is the most popular part of the South West Coast Path and you should hike at least some of it while you're in the region, to see rare plants, coastal birds, and possible marine mammals in the water below. From Helston, hikers can ramble the ten miles to Falmouth via the Helford River, Pendennis Castle and fab River Fal views.

Plenty of popular Cornish attractions are easy to get to from Skyburriowe Farm House, like the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek and Flambards theme park at Helston, the National Maritime Museum at Falmouth and the swish Tate gallery at swish arty town St Ives. The Eden Project near St Austell is about an hour's drive to the north east.

Also near St Austell, the Lost Gardens of Heligan are a splendidly different day out; greenery fans who don't want to drive too far can also mosey around Trebah and Glendurgan gardens, both near Falmouth, or the National Trust's Trengwainton Gardens at Penzance about half an hour's drive from Helston.

Must see

  • National Seal Sanctuary (2.4 miles)
  • Flambards (2.9 miles)
  • Trebah Garden (5.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Penrose Estate: Gunwalloe and Loe Pool (4.0 miles)
