  • Cornwall caravan site on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from Helston
  • Gunwalloe Church Cove Beach and Flambards Theme Park 10 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-friendly grass pitches; pubs and shops within 10 minutes’ drive
Always on the lookout for a quiet corner of Cornwall in which to lay your head? One that’s close to beaches, theme parks and woodland walks as well? Peaceful Gunwalloe Caravan Park may suit you very well, set as it is on a working arable farm less than 10 minutes’ drive from Gunwalloe Church Cove Beach, Flambards Theme Park and forest trails at National Trust-owned Penrose. With easy access to tree-sheltered grass pitches along hardstanding tracks, this is a no-frills site, owned and run by a family for families. Pets are welcome to tag along too, and there’s plenty of dog walking to be had along forested trails and shingle banks around The Loe freshwater lake and Carminowe Creek (10 minutes’ drive). Head to Gunwalloe village for a night out in the well-known Halzephron Inn (five minutes’ drive or half an hour’s walk), or try out waterfront pubs and takeaways around the fishing harbour in Porthleven (15 minutes’ drive). If you’re running short on provisions, historic Helston (10 minutes) has supermarkets for stocking up as well as pasty shops, pizzerias and burger bars if you’d like to give cooking a miss.

Liked: Peaceful site, facilities good, warden very friendly. Recommended on local restaurants, which we enjoyed. Could do with duckboards in showers, no problems otherwise.

Electric grass pitch (medium)

Liked: - friendly owner - perfect location with 10 mins driving to Lidl and also loads of attractions around - toilet and showers were really clean - three big sinks for washing dishes were so handy (even sponges and washing liquids provided) - have a grass protected area for dogs to enjoy off leash

Disliked: - there were only one mini fridge and two mini freezers (it could be much better if there were bigger) - there was no water tap next to our tent so have to fill our water tank next to the others (which might be annoying for them) - every pitch had their power extensions but power distribution was done by long cables running over trees or cable extensions on the ground wrapped by some plastic (not sure how safe is that so need some proper cabling under the ground)

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Owner and family are lovely. Facilities are fresh and clean Campfires allowed Easy access from main road (though not close to it) Good pitches with well marked out spaces. Good location with plenty to do all around. Good shelter on campervan pitches.

Disliked: Crepe stall was only there for one night (they were delicious, could have eaten them all weekend)

Electric grass pitch (medium)

Liked: Owners have just taken over the place and were very friendly. On request, we were also allowed to move to a pitch that we liked better. Pitches are even and protected from the wind by hedges.

Disliked: The sanitary facilities were very dirty and were only cleaned very superficially. There was a rubbish separation station next to the washing up area which was not emptied often enough. The public freezers did not appear to have been cleaned and sanitised for some time.

From the manager: I complete dispute this review- the toilet and shower facilities are cleaned thoroughly at least once every day but are checked throughout the day. The public fridges and freezers are again cleaned and maintained regular and are not dirty on the inside. I also came around to you a few times and checked everything was ok with you for your stay which you never said anything to us, so that we could have sorted out any of your issues.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: We were very impressed with Gunwalloe Caravan Park. The site was well managed and had everything we needed. The pitches were sheltered but spacious, with water and electric hookups, as required. The shower block is new and kept clean. The owners, Claire and Brian are very friendly and made us very welcome. The site is ideally situated for exploring the Lizard peninsula, with the lovely Church Cove a short drive away. We enjoyed our stay, and our only disappointment was that our holiday was over too soon! We would definitely go back another year. Thank you!

Electric grass pitch (medium)

Liked: Washing up facilities was good.

Disliked: Showers and toilets are awful, was seen them cleaned once in 6 days, dog poo all over the grass, photos are very deceiving. Showers stopped working half way through showering me and my 3 children.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for this review- can i just reply and say the showers are cleaned everyday to which you wouldn't have seen as it was when you were out each day, and they are checked again morning and evening. All owners of dogs are reminded to pick up after their dog and i walk around the site every morning and evening checking for cleanliness - including picking up your rubbish. As for the cold showers that was due to a power failure in the shower block after your electric connection was left out in the wet and tripped everything off, to which it was sorted and the water came back on again.

Local attractions

When you fancy a serious yomp along the dramatic coastline, follow the South West Coast Path (10 minutes’ drive) to Kynance Cove (around three hours’ walk) on the Lizard Peninsula. Shorter hops include a shoreline walk to Porthleven (90 minutes), and strolls around the headland at Poldhu Cove (20 minutes). The kids may well pester you until they get to spend the day at Flambards Theme Park (10 minutes’ drive), with its abundance of thrill rides (see if they’re brave enough to face the Hornet roller coaster). If it’s animals that float the family boat, consider a visit to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (also 10 minutes) to join sea lion feeding sessions and watch beavers frolic in their watery enclosures. History lovers might care to head for the harbourside National Maritime Museum Cornwall (35 minutes) in Falmouth to tour historic steamboats and let the kids loose on interactive, pirate-themed exhibits. When the weather is warm and you’d prefer to be outdoors, have a wander through the subtropical plantings and water features at dog-friendly Trebah Garden (half an hour).
