  • Dog-friendly retreat on a private meadow; hot tub and barbecue hut
When only luxury and total privacy will do, head for Gillan Creek Retreat on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. Tucked neatly into a private tree-shaded meadow, it’s just the spot for a romantic, adults-only getaway from the realities of everyday life. Set in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the retreat is the ultimate in off-grid glamping glamour – not that you’d know it, as the shepherd’s hut has a hot power shower, flushing toilet and wifi, all powered by solar panels, and fresh water from a borehole nearby. Inside the shepherd’s hut is a king-size four-poster bed, with storage underneath and Egyptian cotton bedding provided. There are complimentary toiletries in the ensuite bathroom, and the kitchenette has a fridge, gas hob and all cooking essentials. On chilly evenings, the woodburning stove keeps you toasty warm, with top-up logs available for a small charge. Next to the hut is the woodfired hot tub, lovely for chilling, listening out for the hooting of tawny owls or star-gazing on clear nights. The Hobbit-style barbecue lodge is for your private use, so you can cook no matter what the weather is doing outside. After a day of exploring, laze on the hammock with a book or listen to the gentle burbling of the creek. Your nearest neighbours are some friendly chickens, safety fenced from any doggy guests, and if you’re lucky, you might spot the deer herd that sometimes visits the meadow.

Local attractions

Gillan Creek Retreat is handy for exploring Cornwall’s beaches and coves. Kynance Cove (25 minutes’ drive) has a white sand beach backed by dramatic red-and-green cliffs, and you can walk over to Asparagus Island at low tide. Mullion Cove (20 minutes) has a tiny sliver of beach in the harbour, and novice surfers can head for sheltered Kennack Sands (15 minutes) when other beaches are too windy to get out on the waves. Hikers access the South West Coast Path at Porthleven (20 minutes) for views of the Cornish coastline, and for shorter strolls, Trebah Garden (half an hour) has miles of footpaths through exotic planting and countless secret corners for picnics à deux. Or how about walking across the bay from Marazion (35 minutes, worth a visit for its art galleries) to St Michael’s Mount? Be sure to check tide times before you set off. As well as adrenaline rides, Flambards Theme Park has indoor attractions like the Victorian Village and Britain in the Blitz, and if you’re a bit of an animal nut, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (both 15 minutes) is home to sea lions and penguins as well as Cornwall’s native grey seals.
