  • Simple site in south Cornwall, five minutes' drive from a surf beach
  • A 20-minute drive from St Ives, Scilly ferries and St Michael's Mount
  • A five-minute drive from a pub and a farm shop
Surf beaches? Coast walks? Simple outdoor down time with peace and seclusion thrown in? Ride up to The Old Stables Campsite, a back to basics and back to nature spot in Cornwall, five minutes’ drive from the top surf beach of Gwithian Towans. There's plenty of wide open space here, so guests can laze about and take in the views. Amenities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a tap for water. However simple you like your stays to be, it’s handy to know that the site's a five-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the village of Connor Downs where there’s a pub with food. A farm shop and restaurant selling and serving up fresh local produce is two minutes’ drive away; for more serious stocking up, it’s a 20-minute drive to Penzance. Hit the beach five minutes’ drive away for surfing, bike hire and to join up with the mighty 630-mile South West Coast Path.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Pitch size was good. Great location for Beaches. Super facilities.

Disliked: Perfectly fine but no soul to the site. Maybe because it was end of season? Some road noise.

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that you found the pitches to be a good size, the facilities clean and that you were in a great location. We are sorry that you left us feeling that our site had ‘no soul’, but we welcome your honesty and completely understand that we won’t be everybody’s ‘cup of tea’ and there are some who will not want to return to us. Liked: Lovely and clean great value for money. Showers hot and spotless. Toilets spotless. Lots of room on the field. Very friendly welcome

Disliked: Nothing really

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review. We are so pleased that you found the site clean, especially the facilities which you describe as ‘spotless’ and great value for money. We always try to be welcoming, so are glad this comes across to our guests. We hope you will visit us again in the future. Jayne and Mike

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely place. Great access to some amazing beaches. The guys that run the site were friendly without being overbearing, and were really happy to make your stay pleasant. There’s an accessible shower which is awesome as my daughter has mobility difficulties so showering was not a trauma enducing experience! Proper chilled. Oh, with a wetsuit wash hanger which is pretty essential as the beaches nearby have good waves.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike really. Would be great if it stayed open all year for those of us who live just that bit too far away to access the beaches in one day but that’s me being selfish.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write such a glowing review. We are bowled over by all the amazing reviews that we receive. We do our best to give all of our guests a great stay and it’s great that people like yourselves take time to write reviews. We are glad that you found the easy access shower useful and had a chilled stay. Unfortunately Cornwall doesn’t have the climate to stay open all year and our ground just wouldn’t survive. We do hope in the future to have some hard standing pitches that would enable us to offer a longer season. Although we do look forward to a winter break and some sun 🌞 after a busy summer so would need to close at some point 😁 Jayne and Mike

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Brilliant spot

Disliked: Showers turned off at 10 pm . That’s the only downside

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and would visit again, despite the showers going off at 10pm. 😁. Turning them off at this time of night not only stops the misuse of them, but also allows Mike to spray them with a cleaning fluid that works overnight to thoroughly sanitise and leave them spotlessly clean ready for the morning rush. It’s great that you would stay again in the future. Jayne and Mike

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Easy access Friendly check in good facilities

Disliked: The ground was quite muddy on the pitch Not much for children to do

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for choosing to stay with us and for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that you found the site easy to access and the facilities clean. We are sorry that the ground on your pitch was muddy. As it is near the end of the season and we have had many rainy days the pitches especially the popular ones near the facilities that have had tents on for the last six weeks have taken a battering. Had we known this we could have moved you to another pitch. I am sorry that you felt there was not much for the children to do. We do only advertise as a basic site and we encourage natural play in the middle of the big field, which is why it is left empty. We don’t plan to add any additional play areas in the future. We understand that this will not suit all of our guests and there are some like yourselves who would not wish to return, but hope you find a site more suited to your needs. Jayne and mike

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Cleanliness of facilities - best we've had Size of pitch was excellent Felt safe Good location as a base Essentials available and a food van for breakfast Fairly priced

Disliked: Chickens waking us up at 4.15 every morning No guests at any time at on site without paying a full days fee for them Wrong side of Hayle roundabout so at busy times can take 40 mins to get to Hayle instead of 9 min Phone signal and internet was patchy, so no good if you like to stream videos/watch you tube.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review and for commenting that you felt safe with us and our facilities are the cleanest you’ve experienced. We are sorry that the cockerel 🐓gave you an early alarm call, every morning . Even we keep hoping that he will loose track of time as he gets older and give us a lie in 🤣Unfortunately we have no control over the birds, because they don’t belong to us, but we do get amazingly fresh free range eggs from the farm though. We can appreciate that our no visitor policy will not suit everyone, which is why we make it really clear in our T’s and C’s at the time of booking, so people have a choice of wether to stay with us and there is clear signage on site for everyone to be aware of. Our facilities are for paying guests whose fees go towards the up keep of the site and providing security so that we do keep our guests safe and it is something that we do not intend changing in the future. It’s great though that you will still recommend us to your friends and would visit again in the future. Jayne and Mike

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Really enjoyed our stay again this year and look forward to returning for more trips. Mike and Jayne take a lot of pride in keeping their site clean and tidy. All the basics available (shower/toilet block, kitchen wash up area w/freezer, multiple water refill points) Mike always on hand to provide assistance which was appreciated. On site food van serving breakfast and hot drinks most mornings and crepes [Gluten Free and Dairy Free options available] and themed nights some evenings). Location is great - close to A30 and 5 mins from Hayle which has all the local amenities required. Close to Gwithian and Godrevy beaches and short drive to Hayle and Portreath beaches in opposite directions.

Disliked: Only minor point stopping it from full 5 stars are the shower heads - would be beneficial if moveable heads for ease of use. Currently they’re fixed heads but they’re always kept immaculately clean.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for returning again this year and for taking the time to write a review. It’s great that enjoyed your stay again and found us helpful. It’s great to feel appreciated 😁. The showers were custom built for us, but we will look into maybe a couple of movable shower heads in the future, if we are able to do it without any major refurbishment costs. We look forward to your return in the future and perhaps a 5 star review.😂 Jayne and mike

Indy camping pod

Liked: Loved noise curfew as it calmed everything down. Site so clean and all staff/owners so accommodating. Breakfast van a treat but unfortunately missed the evening food. Our pod was unique and very comfy.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. It’s great that you loved the uniqueness of your pod and found that quiet time was beneficial for you, as it is for many. We work hard to keep the site clean and provide a friendly environment, so the positivity of the majority of reviews that we receive are greatly appreciated and make the hard work and long hours worth it. We hope you will visit us again in the future. Jayne and Mike

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Everything! Amazing location - 5 mins from the stunning Gwithian beach. Clean toilets/showers, lovely hot showers and plenty of toilets and showers (no queues) The amazing couple in the hot food van - so lovely and friendly and such a bonus having this on site - open 5 mornings a week and 3 evenings. The owners were very accommodating when we asked to stay an extra 2 nights. Stayed 11 nights in total, could have easily stayed longer ❤️

Disliked: Nothing, great value for money, hope to return next year. Oh, there is no WiFi, but that didn't bother me, just my teenage son lol!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It’s fab that you likes everything thing about your stay with us and you didn’t have to queue to use the facilities. I have passed on your review to Tony and Sue who do the food van, who we also love having on site. We are glad that we could accommodate your request for extra nights and you ended up staying for 11. Although we don’t have WiFi, the 4/5 g signal is very good on site, so hopefully it wasn’t too awful for your son 😀. We hope to see you again next year. Jayne and Mike

Local attractions

The beaches along this stretch of Cornwall’s coast are top spots for watersports, nature walks and the simple pleasures of splashing in the sea. Walk the coast path up to the more secluded sands at Godrevy (a 10-minute drive), then onwards to spot seals from Godrevy Point. For days away from the waves, there’s go-karting to be had at Hayle as well as animal encounters and indoor play at the Paradise Park and Jungle Barn. For something more artistic, make for St Ives (20 minutes) for a wander round the Tate Gallery and the studio of sculptor Barbara Hepworth or go underground on a walk through Cornwall’s industrial history at the Geevor Tin Mine (half an hour). Penzance is your place for boat trips: fishing, seal spotting and dolphin watching as well as the daily ferries to the Scilly Isles (you can take the helicopter for a quicker trip). Day trips to this subtropical island group are very doable, with many visitors hiring bikes to explore the beaches or find spots to go snorkelling with the friendly grey seals. For a closer island experience, take a 20-minute drive to Marazion then walk the cobbled causeway to St Michael’s Mount. It might involve a boat ride at certain times of day, so check ahead, but however you arrive you’ll find a treat on this island with its medieval chapel and castle, winding paths and nature-filled gardens.
