The Old Stables Campsite: Sunny day

General

  • Simple site in south Cornwall, five minutes' drive from a surf beach
  • A 20-minute drive from St Ives, Scilly ferries and St Michael's Mount
  • A five-minute drive from a pub and a farm shop

Surf beaches? Coast walks? Simple outdoor down time with peace and seclusion thrown in? Ride up to The Old Stables Campsite, a back to basics and back to nature spot in Cornwall, five minutes’ drive from the top surf beach of Gwithian Towans.

There's plenty of wide open space here, so guests can laze about and take in the views. Amenities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a tap for water.

However simple you like your stays to be, it’s handy to know that the site's a five-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the village of Connor Downs where there’s a pub with food. A farm shop and restaurant selling and serving up fresh local produce is two minutes’ drive away; for more serious stocking up, it’s a 20-minute drive to Penzance.

Hit the beach five minutes’ drive away for surfing, bike hire and to join up with the mighty 630-mile South West Coast Path.

What a lovely holiday we had. Lovely campsite with friendly owners who helped in anyway they could very accommodating. Stayed in a 2 persons pod and had a tent at the side as there was four of us which the campsite where more than happy to facilitate. Clean facilities on site, cleaned multiple times throughout the day, spacious and plenty of hooks for clothing/bags. Shop stocked with essentials such as wood and gas canisters and all very reasonably priced. Little pop up pizza van visits on a Tuesday and cafe wagon which was delish.

I had read some of the reviews before we went and saw people where complaining about children being asked to return to their tents in the evening. The site ask that your children are around your tent from 9.30 and noise is reduced from 10pm this does not mean that they are asking you to go to bed, we stayed up past this most evenings but with consideration for our neighbours and our music was lowered we never had any issues. The field is big and once the light goes it’s dark so personally I wouldn’t want my children away from the tent alone past this time.

With the name “back to basics” I was expecting far less than what we where greeted with, there was a picnic bench area, shop, pop up food vendors, washing up area, outdoor shower for wet suits, lots of water points, massive flat pitches, and an abundance of space for the kids to play without being near others overall a fantastic little site. We enjoyed it so much we have booked to go back next year!

Many thanks for for your lovely review. We are so glad that you had a lovely holiday and had no issues with our terms and conditions, which are in place to ensure that all people on site have a peaceful stay with us and will want to return.

Our breakfast van which was a trial this year will definitely be back next year for much of the season. As well as the pizza van one night a week, we will offer a burger night and a crepe night in high season and Bank Holidays.

We look forward to your return.

Really chilled site not too far from the beach. Love the fact the pitches are just around the edge of the main field and not all crammed in the middle too, so it's very spacious, and peaceful. Hosts were very accommodating and were on hand just enough. Loved the fact open fires were allowed and the hosts supplied these and wood, at a small cost, which is a nice touch.

    Disliked:

Was slightly disappointed to discover that, because of a few idiots leaving the showers on the owners had to make the decision to shut the showers down at 10pm each night. I would normally get back to the site at 10pm or later so this was a bit of an issue for me. New showers are nice but need hooks replacing as there wasn't anywhere to hang stuff and being a wet room you couldn't really put stuff on the floor. Plus they became steam rooms after a shower so more ventilation some how would be good. Old toilet/shower block is a bit tired, albeit very clean. That would be my only gripe, I like a decent shower! haha

From the manager...

Many thanks for taking the time to write a detailed review.
We are glad that you found the site spacious, liked having the fire pits and found us accommodating. We are sorry that you found the 10pm cut off for showering a bit of an issue. As well as it being down to the showers being left on, it was also, without going into too much detail, that they were being misused and Mike on several occasions caught unauthorised people late at night on site using our facilities. The hooks have been an issue but as the new showers were on rental, we could only use stick on hooks, which despite being Heavy duty kept getting broken on a daily basis. At the end of the season, if the price is right we will purchase these showers and install proper metal hooks and are aiming to put better vents in.

As you rightly say our toilet blocks are old but clean. We do aim to upgrade these in the near future as funds allow.
We look forward to you visiting us again when we will have hooks and better ventilation. Although price dependant and to keep our prices to our customers down you may have to wait another year for the toilets. 🤣

Local attractions

The beaches along this stretch of Cornwall’s coast are top spots for watersports, nature walks and the simple pleasures of splashing in the sea. Walk the coast path up to the more secluded sands at Godrevy (a 10-minute drive), then onwards to spot seals from Godrevy Point.

For days away from the waves, there’s go-karting to be had at Hayle as well as animal encounters and indoor play at the Paradise Park and Jungle Barn. For something more artistic, make for St Ives (20 minutes) for a wander round the Tate Gallery and the studio of sculptor Barbara Hepworth or go underground on a walk through Cornwall’s industrial history at the Geevor Tin Mine (half an hour).

Penzance is your place for boat trips: fishing, seal spotting and dolphin watching as well as the daily ferries to the Scilly Isles (you can take the helicopter for a quicker trip). Day trips to this subtropical island group are very doable, with many visitors hiring bikes to explore the beaches or find spots to go snorkelling with the friendly grey seals.

For a closer island experience, take a 20-minute drive to Marazion then walk the cobbled causeway to St Michael’s Mount. It might involve a boat ride at certain times of day, so check ahead, but however you arrive you’ll find a treat on this island with its medieval chapel and castle, winding paths and nature-filled gardens.
