  • Adults-only site in the countryside a 10-minute drive from Hayle
  • South West Coast Path 15 minutes’ drive; Penzance 20 minutes
  • Peaceful surroundings with red kites and foxes; paths from the site
For a blissfully peaceful Cornish break, Kerthen Gar Campsite Retreat – conveniently positioned as the gateway to the west of the county, but equally handy for the Lizard Peninsula – might just tick all the boxes. Sitting off the B3280 road a 10-minute drive from Hayle, this adults-only site stretches across eight acres of splendid countryside dotted with native trees and wildflower meadows. The small number of pitches ought to ensure privacy (and plenty of space) for every guest, while the no-children, no-dogs, no-amplified-music policy goes a long way towards making the place remarkably peaceful. That, and a polite request for guests to be on site by 10pm – so no stumbling back from the pubs in Goldsithney (10 minutes’ drive) after closing time loudly singing the praise of local ales, please… Instead, settle down on site early and spend an evening tending to the campfire, stargazing or spotting the local wildlife, which includes foxes, rabbits and red kites. There’s plenty to do during the day, too, with a footpath and bridleway network linking the site to the River Hayle (about half an hour on foot), Godolphin Hill (a 45-minute walk) and Tregonning Hill (an hour). Spectacular beaches (such as Gwithian on the north coast, and Hendra or Praa Sands on the south coast) and the South West Coast Path can be accessed within 15 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

At National Trust - Godolphin (five minutes’ drive), the mansion is open to the public only for the first week of the month, while the vast estate is open all year round. It stretches across a vast swathe of Cornish countryside and includes Godolphin Hill, from the top of which are spectacular views all the way to St Ives and St Michael’s Mount. Take a stroll around the harbour in Penzance (20 minutes) before heading to the Jubilee Pool, an Art Deco saltwater lido with a geothermal basin (for which advance booking is recommended). On the way back to the site, take a detour to Marazion, where a causeway links the mainland to Saint Michael’s Mount. Whether it’s beaches, art or coastal hikes you’re after, St Ives (20 minutes) delivers, with vast expanses of sand, attractions such as Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture Garden, and clifftop walks on The Island or to Mans Head and Hor Point.
